Book Description:

Head down. Don’t look up.  Never make eye contact.

Those were the words I lived by growing up, the words that protected me in an unsafe home. But words are only letters and eventually even they couldn’t keep his hands off me.
Hoping to leave behind the shattered life of my past, I find myself in a boring, small town, with an aunt I’ve never met and at a school I loathe.
But soon I learn, not everything in this world is as black and white as I’ve determined. Sometimes those we are so quick to judge often need a second, third or even fourth time to make a first impression.
And often, there are friendships and even love waiting just around the corner, if we are brave enough to take the first step.
Am I brave? Or will I hide behind these tattered gloves of mine forever?

My Review:

I feel like trying to tell you how much I loved The Tattered Gloves is simply going to fall flat in comparison to how I truly feel about it.  I am certain even at this early date that this will be one of my favorite reads of the year, something that will be a challenge for me the rest of the year considering what other books will have to live up to.  Also, can we just talk a little bit about how beautiful this cover is, simple and yet powerful so like the words that you will read inside the cover.

I don't read quite as much YA Lit as I likely should, but I love J.L. Berg's Contemporary Romances and after I got a glimpse of the cover and read the synopsis I knew that this would be one I had to have in my hands.

Willow Fairchild's life has been nothing if not tragic.  Raised poor in Washington DC by a mother who, for lack of better words had no time or true love for her daughter she learned early (a lesson that her mother taught her for her own survival, perhaps the only act of love her mother did for her despite what the act was) to hide herself away from her mothers sordid world.  One horrible night, one horrific event changes everything and all because poor Willow was starving.

Shipped off to live with her mother's twin sister, an aunt she never knew existed until she's given a a bus ticket, a phone number, and a name Willow shows in a rural Virginia town broken and virtually destroyed inside.  Her aunt knows virtually nothing about her except the obvious fact that this young woman has been hurt so deeply that she may never escape the walls she has built around herself.  The community sees a strange girl that both intrigues them and confuses them.  Willow, a girl who has spent her life hiding and knows now more than ever that her {mental} survival depends on her ability to stay separated from everyone.  Except, her aunt, a handsome young man named Sam, and a vibrant girl named Allison refuse to let her hide.

I adored all the relationships in this book, the quiet yet powerful relationship between Willow and her Aunt Addy.  The friendship between Allison and Willow is one of my favorite female teen friendships ever.  I was so worried through most of the book that something would come between them as often seems to be the case with teen girls.  I was waiting for that moment that Allison was cruel to Willow, where she shoves her aside because she feels Willow took something of hers or because Allison's 'old' friends made her feel bad for liking Willow, that moment when Allison becomes a bully.  I was beyond happy to find that was never the case.  The friendship between Willow and Allison is based in true friendship and just the desire to be good to one another.  Then there is the relationship between Willow and Sam.  A relationship that I can admit had it's emo moments, but that never made me want to roll my eyes at their antics and feelings.  I am so in love with this couple that I want to stay with them for years, I want to watch them go off to college (if that's where their path leads them), I want to see them get married and have a family, I want to watch them into old age loving one another on a level that escapes so many.  This isn't a relationship filled with drama, though it has it's ups and downs; it is a relationship built on their need to understand one another and to simply give each other support and happiness.  It feels so advanced for two 16 year old teenagers but at the same time it is perfect.  I never doubt Willow and Sam's feelings for one another or that they can stand the test of time with each other.

The story of The Tattered Gloves is a story of survival, redemption, acceptance, love, friendship, and understanding.  The story of The Tattered Gloves is not an easy read.  There are a lot of difficult moments, it is emotional and moving.  If you have triggers to abuse and rape I recommend you taking a moment before you start this book.  I would never say don't read it because of the triggers, this book is too beautiful to pass up, but before you begin know that it could be too much for you.  You will find yourself completely immersed in the story and before you know it you will be closing the back cover, sighing to yourself and wishing that it hadn't ended.   This book makes you want to look at it and say "You complete me", while goofily signing a little heart at it.  You will finish this book wanting more but feeling completely fulfilled and so happy that you picked it up. This is a book you will want on your shelf so you can pull it off every now and again and just sigh at it, petting it's cover, opening the pages and loosing yourself again and again in a story of beauty, heartache, friendship, and love.

Altar of Resistance by Samuel Marquis - Author Spotlight Interview

Book Description:

The gripping story of the Italian Campaign and Nazi Occupation of Rome in 1943-1944 through the eyes of the Allies, the German Occupiers, Pope Pius XII and the Vatican, and the Roman Resistance. Book 2 of the bestselling, award-winning WWII Trilogy.

In this second thriller in the bestselling WWII Trilogy, the Eternal City of Rome during the Nazi Occupation of 1943-1944 is a besieged city. In this perilous wartime setting, Rome is a tinderbox of four conflicting parties:

• The Allies—represented by Major John Bridger of the American-Canadian First Special Service Force—trying to capture Rome as the first Axis prize of war but encountering stiff opposition

• The Germans—represented by Waffen-SS Colonel Wilhelm Hollmann, the German father of John Bridger—trying to throw the Allies back into the sea while holding Rome hostage and using it as a staging ground and supply line to the front.

• Pope Pius XII, deeply involved in the plot to remove Hitler from power while struggling to maintain Vatican impartiality, mediate between the West and Nazi Germany, save Rome from destruction, and protect the city’s Jews and others from extermination.

• And finally, the Partisans represented by Teresa Kruger, daughter of Hollmann and half-sister of John Bridger, who during the German Occupation is transformed from a passive member of Rome’s
aristocracy to an active Resistance fighter.

Based on actual historical events and newly released OSS/CIA and KGB documents, Altar of Resistance recounts in detail the long, hard road that led to the Allied liberation of Rome. War is about simple survival, and Bridger and Teresa must battle their father and the Nazi occupiers in the name of freedom; while the Allies’ secret agent—Roman-born Pope Pius XII, leader of the Vatican’s Church of Spies and codenamed the “Chief”—orchestrates events behind the scenes in an effort to thwart German oppression, ensure the overthrow of the Führer, and usher in a viable post-Hitler government.

An Interview with Samuel Marquis

1. Altar of Resistance is your sixth novel in a little over a year, and the second book in one of three very different series. That’s incredibly prolific—how do you stay disciplined and focused as a writer (especially while maintaining a career as a VP at an environmental consulting firm)?

It’s not easy to juggle everything, but I do it because I love to write compelling stories. I also happen to have a backlog of seven very good thrillers since I have been at this for a few years and have had two New York literary agents. But the main reason I do it is because my father died a year ago anmy new motto is “I Ain’t Wasting Time No More” in honor of the legendary Allman Brothers’ song. Good stories need to be out there in the world, and it doesn’t matter how they get there. Indie, traditional, hybrid —they are, ultimately, all the same. It’s about the storytelling and nothing more. Compelling stories and compelling voices must be heard, and it doesn’t matter what road they take to reach out and touch readers.

2. How does it feel to return once again to your WWII series (Book 1, Bodyguard of Deception, was released in March 2016)? Why is Altar of Resistance (Book 2 of the series) an important book?

I love researching and writing WWII espionage thrillers most of all, but the genre does take a lot of hard work and the book readers tend to be some of my harshest critics (insert laughter). Altar of Resistance is a basically a history book, written as a thriller, covering the German Occupation of Rome and Italian Campaign of 1943-1945. It is an important subject for several reasons. First, the Italian Campaign—or the Guerra di Liberazione (War of Liberation) as Italians prefer to call it—was the only theater of operations that included a major world leader, Pope Pius XII, caught up not only in the middle of the fighting but in the midst of a Nazi occupation and a major plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. Second, it involved the most diverse assemblage of nationalities and differing races among the Allied and Axis armies during WWII, including not only Americans (including Native -Americans, African -Americans, Hispanic-Americans, and Japanese -Americans), British, an d Germans in the
fighting, but also Italians (on both sides), Austrians, Yugoslavians, French, Moroccans, Canadians, New Zealanders (whites and Maori), Poles, Nepalese, Indians (all faiths), South Africans (white, Asian, black, Zulus), and in the air forces, Australians, Rhodesians, and others. The war in Italy was a truly multinational and multiracial affair in a truly global war. Finally, the Italian Campaign showcased some of the most furious fighting of the war with over a million total casualties, including more than 300,000 Allied and 500,000 German casualties and over 150,000 Italian civilians killed
. I wanted to recreate this monumental event in American and world history in a sprawling, epic spy thriller reminiscent of Ken Follett’s WWII novels.

3. What are the biggest lessons you’ve learned so far during your ambitious and successful publishing journey?

There is only one reason to be a suspense writer, and that’s to write great stories that resonate and will stand the test of time. Unless you’re a mega -bestselling author, there is certainly no reason to do it for the money. Telling compelling stories, then, is the sole justifiable reason to write novels that meets every litmus test. If you’re doing it for any other reason, you’re in the wrong business. It’s about the art of great storytelling and nothing else.

4. You mentioned that you are especially interested in military history and intelligence, specifically related to the Golden Age of Piracy, Plains Indian Wars, World War II, espionage, and the War on Terror. What is it about those subjects that fascinate you, and does that fascination influence your work?

The short answer is that I’ve always loved history, especially the underdogs and iconoclasts of American history. I grew up watching classic World War Two movies and Westerns with my dad like The Great Escape, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, The Dirty Dozen, The Wild Bunch, Where Eagles Dare, and Patton. These movies had a profound impact on me and the stories I have come to tell. Because of this, it should come as no surprise that my books have been compared to The Great Escape, Public Enemies, The Day of the Jackal, and old-time Westerns. One reviewer said of my WWII thriller, Bodyguard of Deception:

“Marquis throws in everything but the kitchen sink.”

I consider that not a criticism, but a badge of honor, and a tribute to me and my late father and the movies we watched together growing up. Bodyguard of Deception is currently an Amazon Bestseller in Historical Thrillers, as well as a Top 10 Best World War II Spy Book and Top 10 Fiction Book Set During WWII on Goodreads, along with such WWII thrillers as Follett’s Eye of the Needle and The Key to Rebecca, Daniel Silva’s The Unlikely Spy, and Ben Mcintyre’s Agent Zigzag and Double Cross.

5. Who are your greatest literary influences?

In terms of literature and literary fiction, I am a great admirer of Hawthorne, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Steinbeck, A.B. Guthrie, Jr., Michael Shaara, Larry McMurtry, E.L. Doctorow, and Charles Frazier. For non-fiction my roster of greats includes Erik Larson, Robert Utley, Stephen Ambrose, Kevin Duffus, Shelby Foote, Ben Macintyre, S.C. Gwynne, and Hampton Sides. My favorite commercial fiction writers are Frederick Forsyth, Gore Vidal, James Clavell, Dennis Lehane, Barry Eisler, Daniel Silva, Preston and Child, Ken Follett, Stephen Hunter, and Richard North Patterson. I tend to gravitate towards authors who tell stories in the same way I do and to subject matter dealing with my areas of research interest in pirates, the Plains Indian Wars, World War II, espionage, the War on Terror, and modern science with a geological, biological, or paleontological component.

6. What is the number one thing you want readers to take away from your novel?

I want people to root for the underdog. All of my books feature underdogs, iconoclasts, and sympathetic villains that are torn up inside on account of the havoc-causing decisions they are forced to make. I also want the reader to come away having learned something, whether it be about WWII spy tradecraft, German POW camps in America, the CIA and modern-day espionage, deep well fracking and earthquakes, political assassinations, or the book publishing industry with warts and all.

Don't Miss the First book in Samuel's World War Two Trilogy

Book Description:

Can the American and British Allies stop a vaunted German spymaster and his U-boat-commander brother from warning Hitler's High Command about the Allies' greatest military secret? It is a secret that could win the war for Germany--or, at the very least, delay the outcome for years with an inestimable cost in bloodshed, physical destruction, and suffering. And it is a secret that the two contentious brothers must grapple with within their own Wehrmacht ranks, as they bring U.S. and British intelligence to their knees on America's doorstep with the clock to D-Day ticking down. From a U-boat on the frigid North Sea to a brutal British interrogation center in heart of London to a
remote German-POW camp and the world-famous Broadmoor Hotel overlooking the high plains and snow-dusted mountain peaks of Colorado, Bodyguard of Deception will keep you guessing until the final chapter.

Samuel Marquis is a bestselling, award-winning suspense author. An Expert Witness in groundwater contaminant hydrology, he works by day as a VP-Hydrogeologist with an environmental firm in Boulder, CO, and by night as a spinner of suspense yarns. His first two thrillers, The Slush Pile Brigade and Blind Thrust, were both #1 Denver Post bestsellers, and his first three novels received national book award recognition. The Slush Pile Brigade was an award-winning finalist in the mystery category of the Beverly Hills Book Awards. Blind Thrust was the winner of the Next Generation Indie Book Awards in the suspense category, an award-winning suspense finalist of both the USA Best Book Awards and Beverly Hills Book Awards, and a Foreword Reviews' Book of the Year award finalist (thriller & suspense). His third novel, The Coalition, was the winner of the Beverly Hills Book Awards for a political thriller.

Former Colorado Governor Roy Romer said, "Blind Thrust kept me up until 1 a.m. two nights in a row. I could not put it down. An intriguing mystery that intertwined geology, fracking, and places in Colorado that I know well. Great fun." James Patterson compared The Coalition to The Day After Tomorrow, the classic thriller by Allan Folsom. Donald Maass, author of Writing 21st Century Fiction and two novels, compared The Coalition to The Day of the Jackal. Other book reviewers have compared Bodyguard of Deception to the spy novels of John le Carré, Daniel Silva, Ken Follett, and Alan Furst. The first thriller in Mr. Marquis's World War Two Trilogy, Bodyguard of Deception is currently a Top 10 Best World War II Spy Book and Top 10 Fiction Book Set During WWII on Goodreads along with such WWII thrillers as Follett's Eye of the Needle and The Key to Rebecca, Daniel Silva's The Unlikely Spy, and Ben Mcintyre's Agent Zigzag and Double Cross.

Book Description:

But their potent attraction nearly leads to disaster. In the end they must decide between their dueling appetites for riches and revenge...or love.

My Review:

This is my first book from Oberon Wonch and I was not disappointed, I am rather sad that I hadn't found her before now.  A Knight of Her Own was the perfect book to bring me out of a book slump I'd fallen into after one too many just okay romance reads.

Drago LaForce, a Knight of the Norman Realm, particular 'friend' to the Norman King has been sent out to discover if the rumors of treachery against the current Earl of WulfLandt, who happens to be related by marriage to the King, making disposing of him rather difficult.  To aid in Drago's task he captures (but does not kidnap, riiiight, haha) Lady Isabel, who was the past Earl of WulfLandt's daughter and is known as the Blue Lady.  The Blue Lady is known through out the lands as a woman not to be trifled with.  She lures Norman fighters into her clutches through seduction and in essence 'de-mans' them.  She loathes the current Earl of Wulflandt and may be the only person that can bring him to his knees.

However, Drago soon learns that the legend of the Blue Lady does not match the truth of Lady Isabel and that Lady Isabel is in truth not so much the Lady he expects but rather bit of a wild ruffian.  To get the Earl into his clutches he needs The Blue Lady, he needs a skilled seductress, his only option now is to turn Isabel into a myth and manage to not fall for her in the process.  Isabel is scared for her family, angry to the point of severe prejudice at the Norman invaders (who can blame her?) finds herself in taken into the clutches of the legendary Drago LaForce.  To protect her people and rid their lands of tyrant she must step out of her comfort zone and become a woman meant to seduce men.  Our naive heroine must quickly accept that her future, the future of her people and her lands lie in her ability to tempt and tease.

I really felt for Isabel and Drago in this story.  I loved how well the author painted their pasts so clearly for us and how well her characters develop through out the book.  These two both come at each other from a place of anger, frustrations and pain and while the road is not smooth believing in their story and in their love is easy to do  This isn't an insta-love, there is an immediate attraction but the love comes about over time and through great trial and error.  One of my favorite traits of Drago is that while he is doing what he feels he must do and while that at times hurts both Isabel and himself you always see that everything he does is laced with kindness, he is truly a good man.  He's not the bad boy who becomes a good man, he is simply a hero with a golden heart.

Isabel and I could have been great friends I think.  She's a determined heroine with a spirited heart.  She does what needs to be done and accepts that life, especially the life of a woman in this era, is not going to be easy.  She understands that her future is set, she is a Lady and there are expectations and realities that have to be met.  She may find herself resigned to what is to come, she may know where her duty lies and it may not be what she wants but she will do what needs to be done, she will give her people and her lands all of herself to protect them.  I loved that about her, her strength is extraordinary and Drago is the perfect man for her because he can handle and nurture that strength.  I am also quite fond of her propensity to cuss, she is truly a woman of my heart, haha.

A Knight of Her Own is a wonderful Historical Romance, light enough to make it an easy read but with enough substance and heart to make it one that will leave you completely fulfilled.  I will say that I found a few times where I was wondering what I missed, particularly when it comes to the back story of the Rogues of Rouen.  I am assuming that there is more history in the first book so I am definitely going back to read Come to Me.  I won't say that you have to have read it, I think they can all be safely read as stand-alones but there is clearly a past that I missed out on and I am hoping to discover more about it when I go back to book one.  I will definitely be keeping up with this series and am very excited for more.  I hope it won't be long between books as I noticed there was quite a gap between books 1 and 2 but maybe if I talk this up enough and convince all the Historical Romance fans out there to give this book a go (you won't be disappointed) we will see future books coming along quicker!  So go out and get this one and then settle in for an adventure!

Book Description:

The last time I saw my best friend’s younger brother, he was a geek wearing braces. But when Cannon shows up to crash in my spare room, I get a swift reality check. Now twenty-four, he’s broad shouldered and masculine, and so sinfully sexy, I want to climb him like the jungle gyms we used to enjoy. At six-foot-something with lean muscles hiding under his T-shirt, a deep sexy voice, and full lips that pull into a smirk when he studies me, he’s pure temptation. Fresh out of a messy breakup, he doesn’t want any entanglements. But I can resist, right? I’m holding strong until the third night of our new arrangement when we get drunk and he confesses his biggest secret of all: he’s cursed when it comes to sex. Apparently he’s a god in bed, and women instantly fall in love with him. I’m calling bullshit. In fact, I’m going to prove him wrong, and if I rack up a few much-needed orgasms in the process, all the better. There’s no way I’m going to fall in love with Cannon. But once we start…I realize betting against him may have been the biggest mistake of my life.

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

He can protect anything except his heart

Leese Phelps's road hasn't been an easy one, but it's brought him to the perfect job—working for the elite Body Armor security agency. And what his newest assignment lacks in size, she makes up for in fire and backbone. But being drawn to Catalina Nicholson is a dangerous complication, especially since it could be the very man who hired Leese who's threatening her.

What Catalina knows could get her killed. But who'd believe the sordid truth about her powerful stepfather? Beyond Leese's ripped body and brooding gaze is a man of impeccable honor. He's the last person she expects to trust—and the first who's ever made her feel safe. And he's the only one who can help her expose a deadly secret, if they can just stay alive long enough…

“Romantic thriller veteran Foster has been honing her skill for a long time, and it’s clear she’s at the top of her game here. Readers will find themselves, along with her colorful cast of supporting characters, rooting for a happy-ever-after.”

Kirkus Reviews

“Teasing and humorous dialogue, sizzling sex scenes, tender moments, and overriding tension show Foster’s skill as a balanced storyteller. She sets up a continuing story line for the series with the mystery of who murdered the firm’s founder, Sahara’s brother, but this thread never overwhelms the gripping main story, which will leave readers breathless.”

UNDER PRESSURE - RWB teaser 1

My Review:

A great start to a new spin-off series for Lori Foster.  I am looking forward to seeing how she and her characters grow through out the series.
Under Pressure brings us back into the Ultimate fighters world, with Leese, but opens us up to an entire new group of people and theme.  Leese takes his fighting skills into the security side of things, joining a well respected personal security service, Body Armor and he finds himself thriving.
I love how much Leese has grown since his introduction in the Ultimate series.  He's taken responsibility for his mistakes, he's opened himself to more possibilities and the recognized that his future doesn't lie with in the fighting ring.
Catalina is on the run.  She knows that she's being 'hunted' and she has no safe place, no where to turn.  Her step-father may be the one sending men after her, her brothers...well she doesn't know if she can trust them either.  She grew up in a world full of money, lies and expectations.  A world that she never fit into and now she's on the run from it and has no idea who she can trust.  One night she literally stumbles into the path of a Leese, a man sent by her step-father to protect her and though she can't be sure she can trust her step-father she some how knows she can trust Leese.  While she may trust him, she doesn't trust his safety leading her to keep secrets placing Body Armor, herself, and Leese in danger.

I thoroughly enjoyed the suspense and the story line in this book.  While every thing seems clear every now and again Lori throws wrench into the works and gives the reader a little shock.  I LOVED seeing the guys of Ultimate show up, they aren't a huge part of the series but the fact that they come to stand by Leese no questions asked when he calls gave me that wonderful feeling that had me falling in love with the Ultimate series in the beginning so I am really glad to see it coming through in Body Armor.

I can say that while the romance was steamy and there was a clear connection between Leese and Cat from the very beginning, Cat kinda drove me nuts.  I'm all good with the woman being the 'aggressor', showing that a woman can ask for what she wants but Cat takes it in my opinion a little too far.  Leese says no and it feels like to Cat No does not mean No and that made me a tad uncomfortable.  She wasn't clever in her pursuit of Leese, she was straight out 'balls to the wall' aggressive and it made me cringe a time or two.

In the end I loved seeing how much Leese has grown up and getting the chance to fall for him instead of wanting to shake him silly. There was lots of suspense and romance in this one and I am really looking forward to more!

~ HAPPY READING ~
