My Review:

A second chance romance that had me doing something I never do...flipping to the back because I just couldn't handle not knowing.  It has all the ingredients for a perfectly angsty love story that will have you shouting out, trying to reign in the desire to throw your book/e-reader, tissue worthy moments, and quite a bit of swoon.

He wasn't just any boy- he was "the boy". The only one I never should have met, and the one I'd never trade meeting for the world." - Phoebe

This quote right here sums up the book nicely.  Toxic will pull you in, exasperate you, give you hope then rip it away, and finally leave you feeling satisfied in a way that you would have never expected.  

Phoebe St. Claire comes from wealth; she's lived the life of a spoiled teen, torn between loving and hating that existence.  The summer of her 21st birthday she's vacationing in the Hamptons with childhood friends, friends who all agree that they can't become their parents continuing a spiral of privilege and snobbery.  The night of her birthday Phoebe escapes the party her parents have thrown for her at their county club and stumbles across Jeremy McQueen, bad boy, boy from the wrong side of the tracks, brooding, sexy, a boy with a huge grudge and a chip on his shoulder, the boy that will both steal and then break her heart. Their youthful romance is fast, fierce, and full of (Man I really wanted to go for some alliteration there but just can't use that F word that would fit, haha) steam. 

We meet them again 5 years later after Phoebe has broken off her engagement.  She may wonder why she can't seem to love her fiancé but we are well aware what her 'hangup' is and HE suddenly pops back up in her life on what would have been her wedding night.  I am not going to lie, the back and forth between these two will have you wanting to reach through your e-reader/book to choke someone, but Kim Karr has a way of taking these angst ridden moments and using them perfectly to move the plot along.  You might want to smack Phoebe a time or two, but you'll be too busy putting all the pieces together to care for too long.  

As I read this story I found myself liking it to Pride and Prejudice.  We have two characters with trait flaws that will both bring them together and tear them apart.  Jeremy with his prejudice against wealthy society and Phoebe with her pride (aka jealousy), much like Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth if they can not overcome their faults they will never do anything but hurt one another.  Truths need to be told, egos brought into check, and trust given.  

I loved the plot line, all the suspense, and I really enjoyed all of Phoebe's friends and am hopeful we will get more of their stories in the future because there is SO much going on there.  The angst got to me a time or two, but when all is said and done I think that you (like me) will be really happy you kept going with these two characters because even with all the frustration between their back and forth you can't help but root for them!  Especially Jeremy, I really liked Jeremy, haha.  The back and forth between years takes some getting used to, but I am really glad we got all the insight from their previous relationship as it molded their current one.  The only thing I would have liked added is Jeremy's POV...I would LOVE to read this from his point of view, I think it would feel almost lie a completely different story, maybe we will get lucky and Kim Karr will give that to us in the future.  

Contemporary Romance and New Adult readers will enjoy this book.  There are moments I would call it a fast paced read, but it is also a bit of a slow build-up if that makes sense.  If you are an angst fan then you diffidently want this if you aren't all I can say is give it a try and hang in there, it all makes sense in the end.

This is how this idea came about: I happened to see another author celebrating the release of a follow-up wedding book, and I’ve never written any follow-up stories about any of my characters—once they’ve gotten their happily ever afters in their original story, I just moved right on to the next couple. But that author’s book got me thinking about who I would even do a follow-up story on. Who is it that would get married? My initial thoughts went right to the Hard Ink series, of course, because I’ve been immersed in this world for the past two years and absolutely adore these characters. Seriously – I know many of us have joked about the title of the last book being apropos, and trust me when I say I’m feeling that, too. I want more Hard Ink myself. And then I had to ask – which couple? My gut instinct was to say Nick and Becca. They started the series, have been together the longest, and the personal issues they each have and struggles they each face are less than some of the other characters. BUT… But then my brain started to think about all the other couples. And as I thought through all of them, I could make a case why any of the Hard Ink couples might be the first to get married.

And that’s where YOU come in.

I can’t decide which couple to write.

I could make the argument for Nick and Becca for all the reasons above. I could make the argument that Shane would be eager to take care of Sara in every way he can. I could make the argument that Easy and Jenna’s bond would be so tight because of the hell Easy’s come through and him having saved Jenna’s life. Marz has never wanted anything more than a family, so I could see him being eager to make Emilie his forever. Jeremy and Charlie had the bond of best friends before becoming lovers, and I could see the two of them wanting to prove the depth of their love by committing to forever. And Kat so knocked Beckett on his ass that I could see him wanting to hold her tight and, well, never let go – and finally have a family that valued him.

So, yeah, I can’t decide!

When I was selected to review this book I got so excited and then I remembered I hadn't read the first three books in the series yet so I threw myself into reading and straight from book one I had been anxious to get to Arilyn's story.  She always intrigued me this mysterious earth child who counseled everyone except herself seemingly.  This person who on the outside projects an image of a woman who is strong, in charge, sure, and in control.  I liked her because we know that she isn't all that she seems, we know that maybe she is the exact opposite of what she shows the world.  Arilyn is strong but she is also breaking and what she needs most is what she fears most...someone who will see through her public persona.  

Offer Stone Petty....Stone, yeah I knew this guy was going to be someone extra special when we first met him in Searching for Beautiful.  I loved how these two had that immediate connection, not insta-love but that kind of connection that has everyone around them staring with mouths agape and knowing looks on their faces while the two people they are staring at have no clue why.  Stone and Arilyn can't be anymore different from each other can they?

She's an earth loving yogi, who spends her down time volunteering at her local pet shelter and fosters dogs in need.  She despises smokers, stays clear of unhealthy foods, red meat included, and cares for her aging grandfather who is more than a spirited handful. He is a hard living, hard working cop, with a painful past and an uncertain future due to his anger issues.  He's a recovering smoker, a fast food, steak eating mans man and he is terrified of dogs.  

The thing is I am not sure that these two are really all that different in the end.  They are both struggling to really live life.  They have been moving through it for so long that they have forgotten what living is really meant to be.  

I throughly enjoyed these two with their back and forth banter, their strong wills that refuse to bend to each other and their hearts.  Out of all the couples in this series these two truly have the biggest hearts  of any of them.  I love that Jennifer uses this platform to promote dog rescue...I mean after Robert and Pinky how can you not want to go out and scope up a dog in need.  

I love how real Jennifer makes her characters.  It is easy to feel for them, to understand how they live their lives and why they live them the way they do.  I love that Stone is just a real guy.  He's not some mega wealthy guy who uses pretty words and handsome features to get what he wants.  He's a guy that works for what he wants once he realizes he's worthy of it that is.  Arilyn can get a little crazy with her zen tendencies but I loved that she is willing to compromise for those that she loves.  Is she going to hound the people around her to live more healthily, yeah, but she does it out of love and she might give you crap about that fast good hamburger but she's also going to stand by and let you have it if it's what you truly want.  

Through out this series Jennifer Probst has written characters that melt you heart and are easy to fall in love with and while Nate will ALWAYS be my favorite Stone gave him a run for his money. Considering I married a Nuclear Physicist you can see why Nate has my loyalty, hahaha.  This entire series is a great read for contemporary romance fans.  I am pretty certain that book 4 is the end of the series, but you know we met a good number of people through out this series that I am hoping to see again in the near future... you know maybe Devine and Oh I don't know....Isabella, here's to dreaming, hahaha.  This would be a great summer read and the good thing is that each book can truly be read as a stand alone.  Now you know I always like you to read the whole series because you will meet the other couples, but you want feel anyway left out by reading them out of order in this series, so go forth and read how ever you want, hahaha.
