Excerpt:

Someone—was it Melvin?—catcalled as Reece led me down the hall, and my cheeks flushed. “Okay, he-man, I can walk all by my little self.”
He cast a look over his shoulder at me as he opened the office door. “I’m sure you can.”
Then he pulled me inside.
My gaze flipped to the roses—the roses!—but before I could say a word, he closed the door and my back was pressed against it, his hands planted on either side of my head and his face right in mine. Like right there, within kissing distance.
Wow.
“So, I was at my father’s place in New Jersey most of the day, and you know, he lives out near the Pine Barrens, so service is shit.”
I nodded even though I really wasn’t processing what he was saying as I was too busy staring at his mouth. Those lips, fuller on the bottom, drove me to distraction.
“I pull out of his driveway and I have all these messages from Dennis,” he continued, and I finally caught on to what he was talking about. “I honestly thought he was messing with me at first.”
I cringed. “He . . . um, he wasn’t.”
He shot me a bland look. “That much I figured out.” His hands slid on the door, stopping just shy of touching my shoulders. “What did he do to you?”
“What?” I blinked.
“What did that bastard do to make you throw a book through his windshield?”
Oh. Oh. My heart was now wiggling along with my stomach. “He really didn’t do anything. I just lost my cool. He wanted to talk to me, and I didn’t want to talk to him.”
“You don’t have to talk to him.”
“That’s what Dennis said, but I shouldn’t have damaged his car.”
A muscle flexed along his right jaw. “That’s true.” He shook his head. “Damn, Roxy, can’t say I’m surprised.”
My brows flew up. “You’re not?”
He laughed under his breath. “Babe, you’ve always had a hell of a temper on you.”
Ah, that was kind of true. “Is that a good thing or a bad thing?”
Reece cocked his head to the side. “A sexy thing, but vandalism and destruction of property doesn’t look good on you, sweets.”
“No. It doesn’t match my manicure.” I raised my hands, flashing him the blue nails.
He laughed again and then he sobered up, just like that. Cop Face was on, and yeah . . . the low coiling in my stomach told me I found Cop Face arousing. “You’re lucky. He could’ve pressed charges, and this conversation would be going in a whole different direction.”
My own half smile slipped off my face. “I know. It’s . . . I was just with Charlie, and he’s . . .” Unable to continue, I forced a casual shrug I didn’t feel. “What are you going to do with me?”
His lips parted as his chest rose with a deep breath, then his gaze dropped to my mouth, and his expression tightened. He looked . . . he looked hungry. “I have lots of ideas.”

Monstrous - A Mom Monday Review

Author: MarcyKate Connolly
Publication Date: February 10, 2015
Publisher: Harper Collins
Genre: Middle Grade Fantasy
Age Recommendation: 10 and up
Rating: 4 Stars

Book Description:

The city of Bryre suffers under the magic of an evil wizard. Because of his curse, girls sicken and disappear without a trace, and Bryre’s inhabitants live in fear. No one is allowed outside after dark.

Yet night is the only time that Kymera can enter this dangerous city, for she must not be seen by humans. Her father says they would not understand her wings, the bolts in her neck, or her spiky tail—they would kill her. They would not understand that she was created for a purpose: to rescue the girls of Bryre.

Despite her caution, a boy named Ren sees Kym and begins to leave a perfect red rose for her every evening. As they become friends, Kym learns that Ren knows about the missing girls, the wizard, and the evil magic that haunts Bryre.

And what he knows will change Kym’s life.

My Review:

So I have to tell you I originally picked this up based on the cover. It's one of those great covers that tell a story without you actually reading one, one of those covers you just have to pick up and flip over so you can find out exactly what it is all about.  Once I turned it over if I hadn't been hooked before I was then. An unusual heroine, a kind and heroic boy, a mystery, a dragon....the makings of a great story.

This book is a melding of fairy tales and Frankenstein, a high fantasy for the younger crowd, but with enough depth that it is a great book for older middle grade readers who are moving into young adult books.  As an adult it was easy for me to see where this book was headed but I think for a young reader it will have just the right amount of mystery to keep them hooked.  Kymera  (a play on Chimera) a girl who has no one but her father, a girl who was created for a 'greater purpose' but what if that purpose is all wrong, what if everything she believes isn't the truth? What will this young girl with a heart of gold, a deep sense of right and wrong, of loyalty and love do when her world is turned upside down.  I really enjoyed the character of Kymera (Kym), the author does an amazing job of showing us exactly who she is.  Part girl, part beast, all heart.  This is one of those books that you can't talk about too much with out giving something away so I won't get too deep on you.  I will say that I loved watching Kym grow,  how she goes from being a timid girl who only wants to please her father, to the curious girl with a few secrets, the girl who begins to find friends and freedom, the girl who has to overcome, and the girl who becomes the hero.  It's a true coming of age story that I think will really appeal to the 10ish and up crowd.

"If there was any doubt I have to hide the roses from father, it is gone.  His words tear apart my insides.  I cannot believe what he said is true of the boy.  If the humans caught me, I could defend myself.  That is why Father game me the claws to fight, the tail to stun, and the wings to flee.  I want to please Father, but it is no longer the only thing I desire.  I want to see that boy again."

Another thing to note, this is not a happy go lucky book.  This book is melancholy, it has a lonely feeling to it at time, times when you want to break down for the characters.  It also has truly sweet moments as well.

"I leave the safety of my shadows and circle the fountain, the cherubs happily spraying me as I pass.  There, on the edge of the fountain, is a perfect red rose.  Its scent must have mixed in with the other roses in the area, masking it from me until now.  The boy who smells like bread and cinnamon left me a rose."

I love how well developed this world is.  The author isn't flowery with her words, but they just flow across the page transporting you right into the book.  She writes with a beautiful simplicity, but doesn't take away from the intelligence of middle grade readers.  If you are your reader are fans of fairy tales or fantasy I think this is a great read.  Please keep in mind it is a bit on the dark side, but it is a lovely, fast paced, and entertaining story with just the right ending.  I think your reader will walk away feeling like they were touched by this story and it will stick with them for quite some time. Your Middle Grade Readers first book hangover.  *wink*

When I was a child I dreamed of becoming a Broadway star. I read my first Shakespeare play (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) in elementary school.
The rest is history.
It wasn’t until I went to Hampshire College that I began to write and compose seriously. I wrote an opera chronicling Hamlet’s journey through the afterlife and using a potpourri of Shakespeare’s own words for the libretto as the culmination of my course work. Eventually I realized that one of my favorite parts of the process was devising the plot of the opera. While I still dabble with music from time to time, my main creative outlet is now writing books.
Though I’ve written poetry as long as I can remember, I began my first full-length novel in 2008. Since then I’ve completed many other novels including MONSTROUS (Upper MG Fantasy, Frankenstein meets the Brothers Grimm) and have several others languishing in various states of incompletion and disarray. I have more book ideas than I know what to do with, so I always have many other projects in the works!

 *Sweet mercy, those eyes!*

Book Description:

Melanie Kincaid is a trust-fund baby with a knack for sassy comebacks and unnecessarily complicating her privileged life. So, of course she would have to fall in love with a man she can't have.

Jameson Hayes is a NYC firefighter for Manhattan’s oldest ladder company with big shoes to fill and a city to protect. He’s strong, sexy, and not looking for the complications Melanie brings. But he can't stay away from her either. The attraction between them is immediate and the pull between them is crazy powerful. But she's only home for the summer and long-distance relationships never work.

Unfortunately, Melanie’s beauty and smart mouth are a lethal combination and Jameson isn't the only Hayes who's interested. As if his brother isn't enough to compete with, now the city's most famous arsonist wants to claim her as his next prize. Jameson can't stand to watch Melanie get hurt and she can't seem to keep herself out of trouble.

Fall for Me is the first Ladder Company novel, a stand-alone companion series about New York's most elite firefighting family with hot alpha heroes, snarky heroines, and an arsonist hell-bent on destruction.

As a child, JC was fascinated by things that went bump in the night. As they say, some things never change. Now, as an adult, she divides her time between the sexy law men, mythical creatures, and kick-ass heroines that live inside her head and pursuing her bachelor's degree in English. JC is a San Francisco Bay Area native, but has also called both Texas and Louisiana home. These days she rocks her flip flops year round in Northern California and can't imagine a climate more beautiful.

JC writes adult, new adult, and young adult fiction. She dabbles in many different genres including science fiction, horror, chick lit, and murder mysteries, yet she is most enthralled by supernatural stories-- and everything has at least a splash of romance.

Flunked - A Mom Monday Review

Author: Jen Calonita
Publication Date: March 3, 2015
Publisher: Sourcebooks Jabberwocky
Series: Fairy Tale Reform School, Book 1
Genre: Middle Grade
Age Recommendation: 9-13 (and up *wink*)
Rating: 4 Stars

Book Description:

Would you send a villain to do a hero's job? An exciting new twisted fairy tale series from award-winning author Jen Calonita.

Full of regret, Cinderella's wicked stepmother, Flora, has founded the Fairy Tale Reform School with the mission of turning the wicked and criminally mischievous into upstanding members of Enchantasia.

Impish, sassy 12-year-old Gilly has a history of petty theft and she's not too sorry about it. When she lifts a hair clip, she gets tossed in reform school-for at least three months. But when she meets fellow students Jax and Kayla, she learns there's more to this school than its sweet mission. There's a battle brewing and she starts to wonder: can a villain really change?

  My Review:

What a fun read this turned out to be.  It was like a mix-up of Harry Potter (with the schools moving rooms and walls shifting), Once Upon a Time (with the thick plots and schemes) and all your favorite fairy tales come to life.

Gillian Cobbler or Gilly as she is known to her friends and family is a spunky heroine who lives a little on the edge and spends her days doing the best she can to help keep her family happy and healthy, even if that means she has to steal a bit here or there. See Enchatsia isn't all it's cracked up to be and for families like Gilly's making a living can be tough, especially when the contract for your father's famous glass slippers has been given over to (Cinder)Ella's Fairy Godmother.  But, now she's been caught and taken to Fairy Tale Reform School (FTRS),  school full of outcasts and reformed (or are they) villains. A school whose mission it is to "Turn wicked delinquents and former villains into future heroes.

I really enjoyed the beginning of this story because we don't just start out knowing that Gilly has gotten caught, we get to see exactly how it plays out, how the gentry associate with the town folk, and most importantly we get a good look into the workings of Gilly's mind.

Once at Reform school it is a story full of twists and turns, intrigue and friendship. I really enjoyed getting to know each character and watching as these 'reformed' villains deal with their FTRS students, I mean can these villains truly be reformed and if they are then who is trying to ruin the schools anniversary ball and will Gilly and her friends be able to stop things before someone (or some Princesses) get hurt?

This is a great middle grade read with lots of witty humor, plot twists, action, budding friendships, and a story line that can take us through a series.  If your middle grade reader likes fantasy, fairy tales, magic, action, and stories about friendship they will love this book.  It is a pretty quick and easy read (246 pages) with a ton of charm!

It's no secret how Jen Calonita knows the inside scoop on Hollywood. A former entertainment editor at a teen magazine, Jen started out her career chronicling backstage life at concerts with Justin Timberlake and interviewing Zac Efron on film sets. It was her work in the entertainment world that inspired her first series, Secrets of My Hollywood Life. The six-book series is about a teen starlet named Kaitlin Burke who grows weary of the fame game, but loves being an actress and it's been published in nine countries.
Jen usually likes to write about worlds she knows so she moved on to camp life in the books Sleepaway Girls and Summer State of Mind (since she was a camp counselor as a teen), then tackled reality TV (which she also covered in magazines) in Reality Check. It wasn't until she wrote Belles, which is about two polar opposite girls who share one life-altering secret, that she entered a world different from her own.
It was so much fun creating a new world that Jen jumped into a fairy tale one for her first middle grade, Flunked, which is the first book in the Fairy Tale Reform School series. Fans will love getting to know spunky Gilly and the enchanted reform school she attends run by Cinderella's formerly wicked stepmother, when the first book comes out March 2015. It will be followed by another middle grade series called VIP in early 2016. The first book, I'm with the Band, is a diary-eye look at life on the road with the world's biggest boy band as told by their number one fan, Mackenzie Lowell. (Go back and reread the first paragraph of this bio to see how Jen came up with that idea!)

Holding Strong - Review

   AMAZONBARNES & NOBLE ~ BAMiBOOKS  ~  KOBO

Author: Lori Foster
Publication Date: March 31, 2015
Publisher: Harlequin Books
Series: An Ultimate Novel, Book 2
Genre: New Adult, Contemporary Romance (Mixed Martial Arts: MMA)
Age Recommendation: 18 and up
Rating: 4 Stars

Book Description:
An up-and-coming MMA fighter wants more than just one night from a woman fleeing her past in Lori’s irresistible new novel.

Heavyweight fighter Denver Lewis plays real nice, but he doesn’t share. That’s why he’s been avoiding top-notch flirt Cherry Peyton. But a man can only resist those lush curves for so long. Their encounter surpasses all his fantasies, bringing out protective urges that Cherry’s about to need more than she knows…

Denver’s combination of pure muscle and unexpected tenderness has been driving Cherry wild. Yet no sooner does she get what she’s been craving than old troubles show up on her doorstep. And this time, Cherry can’t hide behind a carefree façade. Because the man by her side is one who’ll fight like hell to keep her safe…if only she’ll trust him enough to let him…

My Review:

Lori Foster's newest book in her Ultimate series takes us right back to Warfield, OH home of a group of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fighters and the women they come to love. Denver Lewis has just been picked up by the SBC (Supreme Battle Challenge) and has his first SBC sanctioned fight just around the corner.  The last thing he needs is Cherry Peyton but that is exactly what he is going to get.

Denver is, like the other guys in his circle of friends' an Alpha Male.  He knows what he wants and typically he takes it.  Until Cherry, the one thing he's afraid to have.   We've watched these two dance around each other through the first two books so while you may think that this is an 'insta-love' situation know that it isn't.  That is one of the things I like best about this series.  Each of the couples are introduced in prior books, we watch them interact, we get snippets of who they are and what they want. What seems like 'insta-love' in their own book really isn't because we know they have actually had months ( each book's timeline is taking place several months after the one before it, not just days after.) of watching each other and getting to know one another.  Denver has had time to get to know Cherry, to watch her interact with his friends and other people, to build up to loving her and find that he is afraid he won't be able to keep her because while he may know her he has been to afraid of getting hurt to learn to understand her.  What I loved best about Denver is his vulnerability.  Here is this bad ass MMA Alpha male who has this soft side, who is afraid of falling in love not because he fears love but because he fears loosing it.

Cherry, the gorgeous, sweet, funny, loving girl next door that all the guys want to be friends with, that a good portion of the guys want to be more than friends with, the girl with a dark past that haunts her present, and keeps her from making attachments.  She's the girl that has fought for everything she has, the girl who has always taken care of herself, the girl who didn't let a horrible past keep her from becoming a beautiful soul, but she is also the girl who is afraid to let anyone in, who is afraid to ask for help, who is afraid to look weak, or unworthy.  She's been beaten down but not broken. If Denver knew who would he see, would he see her or would he see her past?  When Cherry's past comes back to haunt her she has to open her self up and let people see past the happy girl next door to the scared hurt girl underneath.

I loved the chemistry between these two and Denver's determination not to give up on Cherry once he realized that being with out her was something he simply couldn't do.  They steam up the pages right off the bat (but remember this isn't a fast falling, they have been building up to these moments for two books) and the suspense and action follow along quickly keeping you turning pages.  We get to see more of each of the characters particularly Stack and Armie...I can hardly wait for the books for these two, most importantly ARMIE. Holding Strong did nothing to reign in my fire for his book, it managed to simply stoke the flames even more.  I don't want to take anything away from Denver and Cherry but Armies book I think is going to blow us all away.  Sadly it is the last book in the series, noooooooo!!!!!!

One of my favorite things about this series is the sense of family between these guys, their girls, and the community that they live in.  They truly care for one another and are willing to put themselves in harms way and/or on the line to protect each other.  Make no mistake that each guy is wholly there for his girl and will do what ever needs to be done, but I love that they aren't afraid to ask for help when needed and that the rest of the group has no doubts in stepping up.

While this series revolves around a MMA theme it is not a focus in these books.  We get hints at what it takes to be a MMA fighter and we get glimpses of fights but these books are romances not fight books.  At times I have to admit to feeling like we are missing out on some of the story because we don't get much of the MMA side, but I love the romances enough to let that go.  It does kinda make me want to watch a few fights just to see what it is all about though, haha.

If you  love Alpha males, if you like a little MMA in your back story, and if you love a good steamy romance these are great books to pick up.  Denver will not leave you disappointed in any respect....just ask the girls.  *Winks*  This can be read as a stand alone, but as always I think you should read the whole series so you aren't missing out on anything.  In fact I just discovered that this series is actually tied to another that is already complete.  Lori Fosters SBC Fighters series.  You do not need to read this previous series at all to read Ultimate, but as I just discovered a few characters from SBC Fighters make appearances in Ultimate.

Since first publishing in January 1996, Lori Foster has become a USA Today, Publisher’s Weekly and New York Times bestselling author. .

*** Warning: This book is recommended for readers over the age of 18 due to strong language and explicit sexual content.
When I Fall can be read as a standalone novel. ***

My Review:

I am going to start off by saying I love all the books in this series.  They are all romantic, sexy,  angsty, but not so angtsy you want to roll your eyes at the characters, they are touching, and snarky, and did I mention sexy?  But When I Fall takes it to a whole new level.

Reed, what exactly does one say about dear Uwncle Weed?  We've fallen for Reed through the previous two books and now we get to have our fill of him (No Pun Intended....maybe), I am not sure I could ever get enough of this southern bad boy (who is an awfully good guy) with the filthy mouth, his broken heart, man whore ways, and need to be loved that he doesn't even know he has.

After having his heart trampled on Reed gives up any thought of love and is simply out for a good time.  He makes no bones about what he wants from women, how he wants it, and how he wants it to end (preferably before the sun rises on the next day) but his world is turned on it's axis when he spies Beth at one of his favorite 'hunting' grounds McGills.

Beth, the girl that has survived more than her fair share of heartache, sadness, loneliness, abuse (verbal), and tears but doesn't give up on the hope that her world can and will be better. She's like a ray of sunshine that the clouds are constantly trying to cover up but she just bats them away with her smile and keeps on shining.  Now don't get scared that this girl is going to drive you to insanity with her happiness or that because of it she will be a weak heroine, that is definitely not her.  She sees hope in everything but she very much understands the harshness of the world and sees the ugliness around her and will fight her way through the darkness to find her light and share it with those around her, especially Reed.  I also ADORED the fact that she is a book lover and is just hoping for a romantic love like she reads about.

I loved these two together.  Their steam is off the charts and Reed, wow....Reed will just have you drooling, I can't even tell you half the things I love about Reed with out putting a age warning on my blog, haha.  I loved that once Reed gives in he gives in hard and that it never crosses Beth's mind that either as a friend or lover she will stand behind him and help keep him strong.  They have an amazing foundation that leads to a beautiful relationship.  I loved seeing the other two couples come back in this book, it is always so nice to see your favorite couples and get updates on how they are doing.  I am especially interested the introduction of a new character (CJ) and hoping that we will see him soon.  (Hint, Hint Ms. Daniels)

The only thing I could wish for was that I had gotten more closure with Reed and his Ex....I guess I wanted her to get more of her own in the end, but it wasn't really needed it is just my vengeful personality, hahaha.

If you are a fan of New Adult Contemporary Romances and hot steamy reads you don't want to miss any of J. Daniels work but particularly this series and this book.  When I Fall can be read of a stand alone, but I of course always recommend that you read the books prior just so you have all the back ground information since you will see characters from the previous books.

My Review:

Let me start this by saying that I think this is Irish Winter's best one yet and I am pretty surprised by that because I loved Harley so hard, but Harley was an emotionally tough read and while this one had many emotional moments they were emotionally beautiful, not gut clenching sobbing kind of moments, haha. I felt like Rory's book was a bit of a departure from the last few books that revolved quite a bit around the hero's prior military experience and while I love that, I also loved this little twist and escape from the harshness that comes along with the types of military rolls these heroes had.  This book was a bit of fresh air in the complexities of war and PTSD.

Rory and Ember have to be one of my all time favorite couples.  They are both fighting so hard for what they love and fighting to overcome painful pasts.  Ember, WOW (*snicker*), this girl rocks my world and I can see a lot of myself in her (although I am not near as much of a bad ass as she is).  Yeah she's messed up, but she is not going to let that keep her down.  She is an amazing lady who blows my mind with her wit, humor, heart, and plain bad assery!  She is the kind of heroine that can take care of herself but when she falls she falls hard, both in love and in tears.  The heart break she goes through in this story plain and simple took my breath away.
And holy moly ya'll, the bathroom scene...that has to be one of the most electric romantic scenes I have read in a looong time.  After that I was almost considering having my tattoo's removed, haha.  Trust me you want read it.  Just be ready to say screw it to the world and be your beautiful shining self afterwards.  The fact that Rory saw Ember, truly saw her, is one of the most heartfelt things about this book.  He looked past her walls, her pain and saw (no pun intended) the ember beneath it all, saw her fire and spirit and loved her simply for that.  Talking of Rory, let me start by saying there is one part in particular where I wanted to shake him silly...come on guys, lets just get this out there right now, if you don't call the girl...well, it's a problem.  I don't want to tell you too many of his secrets because I think they are important to the stories plot line, but this guy...he is totally your next book boyfriend.  He reminds me a bit of Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice, which you all know (or if you didn't you do now) is my all time favorite book and the book boyfriend to which all others are compared.  Rory has the same manner with his pride as well as prejudices, (yeah, Rory...you totally could have been a bit kinder to Mother and Ember.) but underneath all of that is this protective, caring, loving, sensitive man.  He's the man we all want our daughters to end up with even if we kind of hate them at first.

The way that Irish writes makes it hard not to feel every emotion her characters have as if it was your own.  You laugh with them, cry with them, rage, and love with them.  They sweep you off your feet, sink into your mind and heart, and set up residence.  These are characters that you will not easily forget and that will open your eyes to a new way of seeing the world and a new way of caring for those around you.  They remind you that we never know another persons full story and that being the best person we can be means opening our hearts even just a little to everyone around us.

This book while part of a series can be read as a Stand Alone, as almost always though I would recommend reading all the books just so you have all the background information.  This is the perfect read for anyone looking for a spiritual heartfelt action packed romance.  It is all in there and all pulled together perfectly to make one heck of an amazing read!

Meet the Author:
Irish Winters is an award-winning author who dabbles in poetry, grandchildren, and rarely (as in extremely rarely) the kitchen. More prone to be outdoors than in, she grew up the quintessential tomboy on a farm in rural Wisconsin, spent her teenage years in the Pacific Northwest, but calls the Wasatch Mountains of Northern Utah home. For now. The wife of one handsome husband and the mother of three perfect sons, Irish divides her time between writing at home and travelling the country with her man while - writing. (Seriously, what else?) She believes in making every day count for something and follows the wise admonition of her mother to, "Look out the window and see something!"
