Book Description:

The girl code “Chicks before d*cks” should include that no friend can steal another friend’s boyfriend—or marry them. When Ashton Carter's "good idea at the time" revenge plan lands her in hot water, she never expected to see her ex again—especially in court. A few thousand dollars in damages later, she snags a job as a phone sex operator and seeks out a roommate to help fund her "stay out of jail" expenses. Having a roommate should’ve been helpful—except when they turn out to be the hot, yet douchebag mechanic working on her car. When Ashton learns that her new roommate has been the sexy phone sex caller, lines begin to blur between real life and fantasy. It was supposed to be a no-strings-attached situation; neither of them were ready for love again. When a surprise visit from an ex shakes their forming foundation with an ultimatum, Ashton is forced to face the truth of her feelings and make a choice. With her budding relationship and livelihood at stake, Ashton has to untangle the lines of reality and fantasy in a last ditch effort to protect her heart.

My Review:

So straight up honest here I will admit going into this one with a little trepidation only because I had to read the description about a thousand times before it clicked with me who was doing what and what was basically going on.  It is probably just me and my mind being on a million different things at once all the time, but I was completely befuddled by the synopsis.  My point in telling you this is because I want you to not give credence to it if you are struggling to understand it as well.  The book itself is so much better than the blurb, don't let it turn you away from a truly enjoyable read.

This was my first read from Victoria Bright and I really enjoyed what she gave us here.  There are lots of laughter, some tears of understanding, and so many swoon worthy, steamy moments...so many.  I loved the relationships between the characters from our main couple to the relationships with family and friends.  I will say I was put off a bit at first by Ashton, she came across as quite the jerk to me when I think that O'Shea was supposed to be giving me that vibe.  I just kept saying to myself to remember how hurt she had been and that she was just throwing up walls but there was a time or two that I would have happily given her a hard shake and told her to straighten her shite out, lol.

I loved the concept of Ashton being a 'Phone a Friend', i.e. Sex Call Worker, and O'Shea being one of her 'clients'.  I am so intrigued by this concept that if my husband looks at my Google searches he might find himself a little concerned, lol.  It's interesting as this is something I know is in existence, has been for many, MANY, years but I have honestly just never thought much about how it worked and well Victoria has my interest piqued, ha.

The chemistry between O'Shea and Ashton is off the charts hot and watching their coming to terms with the fact that together they are a perfect match was truly lovely to see.  I loved the way that while this book is not a book about the color of any one's skin, Victoria does take the time to introduce us to  a small touch of what I am sure many interracial couples face from time to time.  I loved the way she handled the moment that ugliness occurred though I do wish they culprit had more of a comeuppance.  Now I will admit to being a 'petty' when it comes to things like this but my true one regret with this book is that a certain couple, a articular character didn't get his what for when he so very much deserved it.  I felt like with all the relationships but that one we get some form of closure.  Instead this one couple does/says terrible things, the man in that relationship is a horrible person and while he gets a small moment of pay back we never get to see the full circle come around for hem/them and I waited all book for it honestly.

That said I think you will find yourself falling for this couple and rooting for them from moment one. There are a lot of laughs to be had between these characters but a lot more love and you will dive in and find that you have finished your read before you even come back up for air.  It's not a short book or necessarily a quick read but it is totally engaging and engrossing.  I kind of had hopes that maybe this would turn into a series, with a certain best friend, a best friends brother, and then maybe one for a cocky mechanic who needs a woman or man to take him in firmly in hand *snicker*.  Not saying there couldn't be but this book definitely ends on an HEA with what is seemingly no thought to moving forward into other stories.  Here's to hoping though because I am really looking forward to more from this author and I think if you give her work a try you will be too!

Book Description:

Yesterday, I had the audacity to imagine a future.
One that didn’t include hunting rogue demons and battling archangels to settle an ancient score at the expense of humanity. One comprised of a home and a family and all the things I’d longed for as a broken child.
Then in the blink of a silver speckled eye, my foolish hope was extinguished, and my world came crumbling down.
We stood strong. We fought. We lost.
I lost.
Legion, the demon I dared to love, was gone.
Now I’m going to tear myself in two and do the unthinkable to find him. I’m going to put my trust in his brother, his enemy, and make a deal with the Devil. And while his darkness and depravity echo mine, I know this won’t end well for either of us.
My body may survive, maybe even my soul. I can’t promise the same for my heart. This time, I will not fail. I will not hesitate. And if it comes down to it, I’ll be the weapon I was created to be. I will follow the code of the Se7en, and do what I should have done when we had the chance.

Exclusive Excerpt:

His sweatpants from earlier were replaced by a pair of dark blue, deliciously fitting blue jeans and a snug grey, deep V-neck shirt. Jesus. The man was absolutely gorgeous. His shirt fit as if it were body paint, molding the muscles in his chest and shoulders. His pants encased his strong thighs, which slightly flexed as he turned in different angles to show me his outfit. “Don’t drown yourself in drool, girl. I’m not too familiar with CPR,” he joked, his hazel eyes twinkling in amusement. I blinked and focused my gaze on his smug expression. Even though I did think he looked damn good, he’d never know about it, the cocky bastard. “Don’t flatter yourself,” I scoffed, plucking a few more grapes from the bag. He chuckled. “Hey, I can read body language, baby. You got that ‘fuck me’ stare going on.” “First, I’m not your baby. Second, as fucking if,” I said, bringing my eyes to the bag of grapes. I wouldn’t necessarily say I wanted him to fuck me, but…the thought wasn’t too far off. “Seriously though, what do you think? Too casual for a bar? Not casual enough? Too tight looking?” I snorted. “Oh, it’s tight enough.” “So too tight?” “Eh, it’s fine.” “Fine?” He groaned. “Fine isn’t good enough. Now I need to go change.” He turned and headed toward his room. “God, and I thought I was a diva,” I teased. He turned and looked at me, a slight frown settling on his full lips. “What’s wrong with wanting to look good, Satan?” “Nothing. I just didn’t take you to be the particular type,” I replied with a smirk. “Well, I like to look good, especially when going to places for the first time.” “Fair enough,” I replied. “Then it looks good, Mr. Diva.” He grinned. “Like sexy good or ‘it’s fine’ good?” he asked, ignoring the nickname I gave him. I rolled my eyes. “Don’t be so obvious in fishing for compliments.” “Just a simple question.” “Fine. Sexy good. Now go away.” His grin turned into a full smile. “So you think I’m sexy then?” I scowled. Of course he’d try to twist the meaning of my words. “Your outfit, yes. You? Still questionable.” Though it wasn’t questionable. We both knew he looked good, but I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction. He tsked and shook his head. “You’re ice cold, A.” “Glad we established that early,” I said and turned back to my grapes. He smirked. “Anyway, not sure when I’ll be back, so do you have a house key or something I can use? I don’t want to wake you,” he said. “Oh shit. I knew I forgot something,” I muttered mostly to myself. “You can borrow mine and I’ll get you one made tomorrow.” “Sounds legit, Satan.” “It’s Ashton.” “You got it, Satan.”

Book Description:

Priest Rahandras has lived with the darkness trapped inside himself for years. Betrayed by his own brother and forced to watch his clan’s brutal annihilation, the only thing Priest wants more than to escape the curse that haunts him—as both man and beast—is to rebuild.

Until the mate he’s longed for walks into his life with an elder from his past. She’s everything he’s wished for, and the key to the clan’s very survival.

Kateri Falsen is a woman of logic and facts. While Priest’s cat can sense her arousal, telling her they’re fated won’t be enough. He’ll have to show her his love: with his words, with his actions, and with his body.

Protecting Kateri from the evil trapped inside him is paramount. But when lost clan members are systematically murdered, he’ll have to choose between exposing his mate to his black magic, or risking her as the next victim.

My Review:

This was my first book by author Rhenna Marks and I throughly enjoyed entering this new world of hers.  I loved the idea of a shifter community that is more than simply shifters but also these magical beings who are connected to the earth through am otherworldly being, I think of her/him as a god like being though S/He is never called such, rather S/He is The Keeper of this communities magic and gifts.  I also really enjoyed the idea that The Keeper is never one thing, person, etc.  It is all dependent on the person that journeys to their 'soul quest'.  I also really like the idea that this is not a given, it is not a must.  You can refuse the soul walk and there are no repercussions.  You'd totally be missing out (ha) but this is not about being a forced 'gift' or something that you have just because of having been born to a certain community.  As Merida in Brave said

"There are those who say fate is something beyond our command. That destiny is not our own, but I know better. Our fate lives within us, you only have to be brave enough to see it."
This fact of choosing ones fate in a Paranormal Romance gave Guardian's Bond a twist and a feel that we haven't seen before in the genre and I really appreciated the new life that it brought.  Of course one thing that you can't just get rid of though is fated mates and I am so happy that is still a part of this story line.

I really enjoyed getting to know Priest and Kateri individually as well as a couple.  They are both strong characters who's back and forth draws you in and keeps you hanging waiting for the moment when everything aligns and they become the mated pair they are meant to be.  Kateri puts up a good fight, ha, but I really enjoyed that Priest gives her all the time she needs to acclimate to the new life she has discovered as well as what being a mate means.  There is a kindness to all of his rough edges that make him so utterly likable.  He is this big dark, brooding man who has been single handedly keeping his community together and thriving, he's not only become this grumpy alpha, after a fight with his very own brother who was trying to take control of the community through force after becoming jealous that The Keeper didn't give him what he believed he deserved, Priest takes on the darkness that had been surrounding his brother.  It now lives within him and colors his every thought.  Kateri brings a light with her that surrounds the darkness allowing Priest to feel the freedom and happiness that has eluded him for so long.  I really enjoyed seeing them come together and how they change each other.  I also am quite enthralled with all the secondary characters and can't wait for them to have their own stories and see how the entire series develops over time.

If you are looking for a new Paranormal Romance with a slight twist to the typical plot lines definitely give the Ancient Ink series a try.  I think the you will be pleasantly surprised with everything.

Warmth blossomed beneath Katy’s skin, the all-too-vivid memory of how Priest’s muscles had felt beneath her palms and how his presence had enveloped her in a protective cocoon lifting to the height of her awareness.

And his scent. She pressed her knees together under the table and fought back a groan. She could still smell him on her. A mix of summer storm, leather and the deepest woods. Her voice came out softer, when she answered. Deep and husky. “That’s just attraction. A chemical response in the body.”

Jade grinned. “Is it?”

She’s mine.

The remembered words sluiced through her in the most exotic caress. Possessive at a level she both craved and railed against. She cleared her throat and laced her fingers together on the table, forcing a detached expression. “Priest said I was his before we left. What did he mean by that?”

Jade looked to Tate, a request for guidance without a word spoken.

Tate shook his head. “I can’t know for sure.”

“But you think you know.”

He hesitated, glanced at Alek as if gauging how well his temper was holding, then shifted his compassionate amber gaze back to Katy. “It’s not up to me to share. Priest will tell you.”

“But the way he acted...how he lost control,” Katy pressed. “Surely, you can see why I want answers.”

For the longest time, Tate merely studied her, consideration and concern marking his handsome features. “I do. It’s still something he should talk to you about, but I will tell you this.” He paused as though carefully considering his words, not just for her but for her brother who’d drawn scarily motionless beside her. “Of all the people who walk this Earth, there is no one safer than you.”

It was hate at first sight......

Affton

I hated Cable James McCaffrey.

He was entitled, spoiled, a user…and an addict.

He was out of control and didn’t bother trying to hide it.

He had everything anyone could want but still seemed miserable and lost.

Every move he made, every mistake he stumbled his way through, rubbed me the wrong way. However, I couldn’t stop myself from trying to save him from himself when no one else would. In the sweltering heat of the summer, Cable taught me that having it all means nothing if you can’t have the one thing you want more than anything else.

Cable

I was obsessed with Affton Reed.

She was rigid, uptight, and no fun. There was something about her innate goodness that called to me.

She acted like she was above all the normal faults and failures that clung to the rest of us like the scent of smoke after a fire.

I was infatuated with her, but that didn’t stop me from acting like she didn’t exist.

In the scorching heat of summer, Affton taught me that there is always a way back from the brink of despair. She showed me that the trick to having it all was realizing that it was already there, in my hands. All I had to do was hold onto it.

The road to recovery is full of twists and turns no matter who is in the driver’s seat.

My Review:

Honestly I have a lot of trouble reviewing books like this.  Books that touch my heart in ways that I never expected.  Recovered is a bit of a departure for Jay Crownover's typical book and maybe that makes it even more difficult to put my review in words.  This is a heart felt, emotional, heart breaking at times, complex story.  These characters are so vivid and real to me, and I think that comes from the fact that Jay herself lived something of a similar story to this one.  She has clearly put all the emotion from the turmoil that was that relationship from her past.

Recovered can be at times hard to process because you just hate to see the amount of pain that both main characters go through, the suffering for everyone that addiction causes.  I could feel my heart breaking but of course Jay knows how to make it all better and give me the steam and romance I need as well.

The dynamic of these two characters, the strong and the weak...the push and the pull, the development of both characters is a beautiful and ugly thing to watch, but most of all it is powerful.  I will forever be grateful for the beauty that is this book through all the ugliness that it gives us.  I know that seems to not make sense but just read it and you will know what I mean.  Jay brings these characters to life and gives us all of them.  You will be enchanted by them while also wanting to run from the pain, but unable to look away.  I can not recommend this book enough to you if you are looking for an emotionally challenging read, if you are looking for a book to break you down right along with the characters only to build you back up.  This is one of those books that I think has the possibility to change a persons life if not just stick in their hearts forever.

~ HAPPY READING ~

Excerpt:

I took another swallow of cinnamon-flavored booze and made a face as it burned down my throat. Maybe I could breathe fire. I needed to be able to if I was going to make it through the summer with Affton Reed looking over my shoulder. She had some of the strongest shields I’d ever seen. If my fire wasn’t hot enough, it would bounce off her and burn me to a crisp. The sun was down, and I was pretty much sitting in the water now. I thought about lying down and letting it lift me up and carry me wherever it wanted. I wasn’t drifting anywhere good on my own. I heard splashing and felt the air behind me stir. No longer alone. No longer left to my own devices and bad choices. I took another swig from the bottle, draining it, and looked over my shoulder at the girl making her way toward me. Her hair looked silver in the darkening light, and there was no mistaking the annoyance on her unmade-up face. She looked at me then shifted her gaze to the empty bottle in my hand. Her lips pulled into a frown, and her eyebrows tugged down into an angry V over the top of her nose. “You aren’t going to make anything about this summer easy, are you, Cable?” I had a thing for her voice. It was a little bit husky and a lot sweet with that slow, southern Texas twang in it. The way my name sounded when she said it, all exasperated and frustrated, was fucking sexy. It made me wonder what it would sound like when she whispered it in the dark while I was inside of her. I’d imagined that more times than I could count over the last eighteen months. “I don’t really do easy, Reed.” I looked at the empty bottle in my hand and contemplated tossing it into the Gulf. Knowing my luck, I’d hit some endangered marine life and give the judge one more reason to add months onto my sentence. Instead, I reached up and handed it to the leggy blonde who was now standing next to me, the water well above her ankles. “Jesus. Did you drink this whole thing?” She sounded incensed, and when I rolled my eyes up to look at her, it was clear she was contemplating hitting me over the head with the very weapon I’d just handed to her. I shrugged. “Pretty much.” The bubbly teen girls barely had the chance to put a dent in it before I swooped in and snagged their stash. She sighed from where she was hovering above me. I jolted in shock when she suddenly lowered herself to the wet sand next to me, the water immediately soaking into her frayed cutoffs and swirling around her ankles and hips as she copied my pose, my empty bottle caught between her feet. She leaned forward, rested her cheek on her knee, and gazed at me steadily out of those mesmerizing eyes. “I tried to tell your mother this was hopeless. I warned her there is no helping someone who doesn’t want to be helped. I don’t want to be here, Cable.” Her voice was hard, and I was surprised that her admission hurt a little bit. I didn’t want to be around me most of the time, but I was used to other people flocking to me, vying for my attention. “I don’t want to be here, but I have to be, so that means you’re stuck with me no matter how difficult you decide to make the next couple of months. I don’t have a choice.” I wanted a cigarette. I needed something to occupy my hands and my mouth. I’d left the smokes and m y t-shirt on the steps of the deck off dad’s house. The steps led to the beach, just a few feet from the water. It was a beautiful house on a prime piece of property. With Affton here, it was nothing more than an expensive jail cell. I knew exactly what means my mother had gone to in order to get Affton to agree to this madness. She told me outright she was blackmailing my former classmate, I think in a thinly veiled attempt to make me care about someone else’s future if I wouldn’t care about my own. I knew if I drove Affton away, her father would lose his job. It wasn’t fair, but my mom had been nothing short of ruthless in her pursuit of my sobriety. “My mom can be very convincing when she puts her mind to it.” She could also be tough as nails and immovable when she wanted something. Affton snorted and shifted so her chin was resting on her knee instead of her cheek. She looked out over the endless landscape of water and sky, and I shivered even though it wasn’t cold. I lifted a hand to run it through my hair. My unease lived inside of me, crawled all around my bones and under my skin. I wasn’t used to it making its way to the surface because of someone else. There was a lot unsaid between me and this girl. The few words we’d exchanged were powerful, important ones that hung heavy between us. It was so much easier when I looked at her, and she refused to look back. “I don’t think convincing is the word I would use…more like conniving. Either way, she tied my hands, so succeed or fail, you are stuck with me until the end of summer. Let’s get you into the house so you can sleep this bottle off and pray you don’t get popped for a piss test tomorrow.” She grabbed the bottle from where she had plunked the base in the sand and lifted a pale eyebrow at me. “You should have picked something…” she trailed off and gave me a shrug. “Less wussy to enjoy your last binge with. This stuff tastes like toothpaste.” She offered me her free hand, and for a second all I could picture was grabbing it and pulling her under with me, letting the water cover us both and take us somewhere we would both rather be. I didn’t. I took her hand and struggled to my feet. Months of forced sobriety tumbled away under the wash of cinnamon whiskey. I wobbled and almost went back down, but before I could nose dive into the shallow water, Affton was there, arm around my waist, empty bottle pressed into my side, a chilly reminder that I’d already fucked this up and it was only the first day. I had no idea how either one of us was going to survive the summer, and if we did, I had no idea how I was supposed to survive beyond that when I was once again left to my own devious and duplicitous devices.

The Consequence of Rejection by Rachel Van Dyken - Release Day Blitz

Title: The Consequence of Rejection
A Standalone Consequence Novel
Author: Rachel Van Dyken
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Release Date: March 26, 2018

Book Description:

You know the universe is trying to tell you something when you get struck by lightning, but only after getting hit on by the elderly, almost getting run over by a semi, and running into the one who got away.
Why do they say it like that anyway?
Like I accidentally lost her when she was the one that got in the car with my best friend and left me.
The day after I proposed.
We were eighteen.
I wanted forever.
She didn't.
It's been ten years.
I tried to move on, tried to get married, had that same wedding crashed by my now best friend who says the only way for me to stop pissing off the universe, is to gain closure with the one woman I can't forget.
So I do it.
I embark on a journey down memory lane that not only lands me in prison but on the receiving end of a fist fight in front of the entire town, this naturally happens after drunken pool sex, climbing the same girl's window, and getting threatened at gunpoint by her father.
To say the universe is trying to tell me something anything, is a giant understatement.
I just hope I survive the message.
And then, I hope I survive her—again.

Excerpt:

Full breasts spilled over into a small black bikini that left nothing to the imagination, it barely covered nipple for that matter, and the bottoms? Well she had to keep adjusting them lets just say high school bathing suits ten years later look small.
In the best way possible.
Head held high she walked right by me to Max, grabbed a shot, took it, then sucked the lime he held out in front of her.
I growled.
Max winked at me. “Something wrong, man?”
I reached for the non existent gun at my side, which just made him grin harder as he kept handing out alcohol to parents of toddlers.
Because thats the type of party it was.
Almost everyone started talking about their kids, retirement, stock portfolios, vacation time, and babies.
It was almost too depressing for words.
I had all those things but what I’d always wanted. A family. Babies.
Maddy.
She shared a sideway’s glance with me.
I reached for her, but she pulled away and ran full speed towards the pool and did a giant canon ball.
People cheered.
While I watched as wet cold water ran down her curvy body, my gaze was so tranfixed on her erect nipples I’m surprised nobody pulled me aside about my current situation of arousal.
Cold water. Fast.
I chased after her, jumped in.
And felt the warm buzz of alcohol fill my veins just as I popped up and saw Max follow, balls first, in my face.
I ducked just in time so I didn’t get a fist full of balls.
The guy only laughed once we both popped up.
I swam towards Maddy, and tugged her against me. “Stop running.”
“I’m not.” Her breath came out raspy. “I’m just…reliving old times, isn’t that what you wanted? So we could have closure?”
Why did it feel like she was turning the tables on me.
“Yeah,” I said slowly, “But—“
Her kiss was swift.
Hard.
Fast, and oh so very punishing as I gaped into her mouth and pinned her against he side of the pool.
Music filled the air out of nowhere from somewhere outside, it pounded into my ears the way I wanted to pound into her.
I grinned against her mouth as she wrapped her legs around my waist.
And then Reid cast a shadow over us and started pouring vodka over our heads.
Maddy tilted her head back and opened her mouth while I leaned in and licked it off her chin.
People cheered.
“Guys!” Someone yelled. “Keep it down, someones going to call the cops!”
“Cops?” Max laughed loudly. “I am the law, bitches!” The music blared. “Plus, we already got our cop here.” He pointed while I took another shot.
People cheered.
And then Maddy squeezed her thighs.
Yeah the cops were coming alright.
