Book Description:

I was just a reporter, trying to stay ahead of my student loans. I knew the rules, and I followed them. I thought I knew how the world worked—humans lived their petty little lives in the safety of the sun. We loved and fought and—when the sun sank—we scurried behind our walls and lived in fear. That is when the monsters came out to play. And even in the safety of the sun, we knew who ruled us. The Houses. And their Scions. Everyone knows the great Houses and their Scions—they are feared and loved and hated and envied. They are the gods who walk the shadows and rule all of our lives. They are salvation and death. And somehow, I am one of them.

Exclusive Excerpt:

“Farley?” I blink, and stare at my intern. She’s a tiny little thing, and it occurs to me—not for the first time—that I have no business putting her in an office like this. We aren’t doing the smart thing—we don’t toe the House line. We’re too little for them to care, but I’m well aware that it’s not exactly safe. “What is it?” “You have a lunch appointment, ma’am.” I frown. “Since when?” “Hendin set it up.” I breathe a curse. Kevin Hendin might be the best damn editor I’ve ever met, but he’s still a fucking pain in the ass. I swallow that thought down and save the draft I’m working on, rising and shrugging into my suit coat. “Where?” “Silver and Ivy.” I go still. Who the hell are we meeting that can afford S&I? It’s one of the finest restaurants in the city, completely human, and expensive as fuck. Winston took me there when I graduated from NYU. Of course, it was for a tiny glass of wine and a shared dessert—neither of us could afford more than that—but it was a sweet gesture that meant a lot, especially coming from my ridiculously practical brother. “Ma’am?” I blink out of my thoughts to focus on my intern, and snatch up my laptop and phone. Shove both with my wallet into my messenger bag and snag my glasses and notebook before I dart out. It’s ridiculous to use a notebook, these days. Everyone has gone digital—what was a gathering wave before Brakken—became a way of life in the aftermath. The Houses controlled everything after, and pushed tech hard. Some people believed it was out of kindness. It wasn’t. But I’ve never been blinded by the pretty veneer of the Houses or their Scions. Silver and Ivy is one of the last places in New York that can still maintain their human only clientele. Because they cater to the wealthy, and even in the aftermath of the plague and all the change that the Houses inflicted on us, the wealthy maintains a level of untouchability. They are protected by that comfort of security that money can buy. Even the wealthiest in our country could be bought by one of the Houses, but I think it amuses them to let the one percent cling to the illusion that they are still different from the rest of us. I step into S&I and belatedly realize that I don’t know who I’m meeting. I mutter a soft curse and the eyebrow of the host twitches in response. No, I suppose he isn’t used to young reporters with a gutter mouth spilling into his lunch hour. I grin, and run a hand through my hair. I’m about to screw up his whole day. I amble up to where he wait and he gives me a frosty stare. “I’m meeting someone,” I say. His gaze sweeps over me and his lips curls just a little, all annoyed disdain that pisses me off. “And you are?” “Farley Hart.” His eyes go wide and he pales, so much so I take a step back. Something is very wrong about all of this, and Winston always told me to listen to my gut. I take another step, and a hand clamps down on my arm, rooting me to the spot. It’s icy and burning and so damn unmovable. I know, even before I let my gaze crawl up. Shiny boots, a pristine black suit that cost more than my degree, a startlingly white shirt with a skinny black tie. Wide shoulders, thin waist, and a hand that’s fucking huge, latched onto me. A ring glints on his finger and I focus on that, on the strange sigil worked into the metal. It’s not gold, and it sure as hell isn’t silver. It’s almost dull. Iron? “Oh shit,” I mutter. A vampire is holding me, keeping me from bolting. And if that weren’t bad enough—it’s a damn Blood Prince.

Twelve Houses. Twelve vampire lines. We ruled from the shadows, and manipulated the world, and when humans came too close to destruction, we intervened. Every House has a Scion. The Finn Factor by Rachel Bailey - Review

Author: Rachel Bailey
Publication Date:  28 September, 2015
Publisher: Entangled Embrace
Genre:  New Adult Contemporary Romance
Age Recommendation: 18 and up
Rating: 4 stars
~ I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ~

Book Description:

Sometimes all a girl needs is a little practice...

It's been twelve months, three days, and eleven hours since accounting student Scarlett Logan made it past a second date. A pitcher of mojitos in hand, she employs her supreme graphing skills to narrow things down to one horrifying explanation. Kissing. Clearly someone needs to teach her how to kiss properly. Like, say, her best friend and roomie, Finn Mackenzie. He's safe, he's convenient, and yeah, maybe just a little gorgeous.

Finn knows exactly why Scarlett's boyfriends are disappearing quickly. Him. Not a single guy she's brought home is nearly good enough. And he'll be damned if he lets some loser give her "kissing lessons." No. He'll do the honors, thank you very much. The moment their lips touch, though, everything turns upside down. But Scarlett deserves the one thing Finn can't give her. And if he doesn't put an end to the sexy little shenanigans, he'll teach Scarlett the hardest lesson of all...heartbreak.

My Review:

I adored this book.  This was my first time reading Rachel Bailey but I can guarantee you it will not be the last.  The Finn Factor is a fun, sweet, swoon-worthy, quick read.

Scarlett Logan, can't seem to keep a date interested.  It's been over a year since she's made it past the critical second date.  Guys just won't let her in and she can't figure out what she's missing that keeps them from coming back for more.  One night after a number of her 'famous mojitos' and some series best friend talk with well, her best friend, Scarlett concludes, through graphs mind you, that her inability to keep a guy around is her lack of experience with kissing.  She must simply be a terrible kisser and decides on a course of action to rectify this.  Of course after numerous mojitos Scarlett determines that there is only one way to go about this...practice.  She's going to contact Cole Jericho, a client at work and a well known actor...who will clearly having his kissing game down.

"Well, he's been on TV most of his life, so he's had to kiss a lot of girls on camera." With the roles he'd been playing in the last few years, it had been a LOT of girls."" - Scarlett

Finn MacKenzie, never saw it coming.  He's been working behind the scenes for years keeping Scarlett's un-worthy dates at bay

"It had been more complicated to track down her dates in the first few years of our friendship, and sometimes they'd get to four or five dates before I could find the latest guy, assess him, and send him packing.  Luckily things had become much more streamlined since she'd moved in......She really needed to start picking a better class of guy." -Finn

then boom, she practically smacks him straight in the heart with this talk of being a bad kisser and wanting to practice; practice with some  random, rich, handsome actor.  He's not worked this hard to keep guys who could appreciate all that was Scarlett away for the past four years to be undermined by some silly notion (brought on through no fault of her own, ahem) that she's a bad kisser.  There is only one way to fix this...It has to be him, Finn has to fall on his sword (so to speak) for the cause.

Can Finn's and Scarlett's friendship survive kissing lessons or will it doom them to a life without each other?  I have to say, that first kissing scene...you think it's going to be all awkward and well, awkward but if you couldn't feel this couple's chemistry before then, you got a load of it during that kiss!

(Gratuitous Chris Pratt moment, don't judge)

It was hot and I think I may have even fallen in love with Finn by then.  The guy does some shady stuff all in the name of friendship, but he truly does it out of a love that he doesn't even recognize and Scarlett isn't exactly clear of conscious either.  I loved their back and forth, I loved the friends to lovers aspect, it works beautifully in this story.  Finn is going to have your heart fluttering in no time, he is really such a great guy.  He's dedicated, hard working, caring, a little bit broken, and a whole lot of sweet.  Scarlett, is a great girl. She's the girl you want to be at that age. Working out who she is and where her life is going, surrounded by friends and family, (even if she would like to strangle her parents every now and again, I mean who doesn't right?) she's kind, generous, fun, also a bit broken, and equally as sweet as Finn.

I really enjoyed the rest of the characters as well.  They are all a bit unconventional, especially Scarlett's parents, who I adored, the scene where Scarlett and her mother talk sex with Finn's youngest sister still makes me giggle.  I could totally feel the heat crawling up my chest and put myself right into Scarlett's place.  I am hopeful that we will perhaps see Finn's oldest sister in a upcoming book, although this is a stand alone.  Maybe if we beg enough?  :-)

This is a sweet, funny, moving book about family, friendship, and love.  If you are a New Adult, Contemporary Romance, or Adult Romance fan you will enjoy this sweet story .

~ HAPPY READING ~

I live with my own personal hero and four dogs on the east coast of Australia. Our house is on my dream property – 10 acres of native trees on the side of a hill, within driving distance to the beach.

I’ve always loved dogs. I love all animals, but dogs have a special place in my heart. My current pack is: Dougal the Border Collie (the most perfect dog that ever there was), Oliver, a black Lab x doberman (the Heathcliffe of dogs – all brooding, clingy and likely to snap), Princess Ava the rescued greyhound (she’s always posing as if a camera is hovering nearby), and Billie our other rescued greyhound (who is still settling in and wondering what she’s got herself in for.

Chapter 1

If she could look at it, with the hindsight of everything that had happened, she would say that it all began six months before Wallace Bryce Talbert went missing. The day Ella Jane Munro sold Llewellyn Koonts a hit of blow in the locker room of her father's country club. Of course, if she had the luxury of hindsight, she might have changed everything by simply going to lunch at the Greenhouse instead of tennis at the club. Then again. Charlotte had never had much use for hindsight and even less for regrets. * Charlie Brooks was an institution at the Buringtree Country Club. She had grown up in the halls, played tennis early and well, swam in the summer and pranced around the greens in tiny shorts, her blonde hair bobbing in her signature braid. She was a perfect debutant. Sweet as sugar when it suited her, and an utter bitch when it didn't. The staff at the club lived in fear of her temper. HR had to step in when she was in high school and they couldn't keep a staff--Charlie either terrorized them into quitting or demanded they were fired over minor infractions. And because she was Travis Brooks only daughter, she usually got her way. Ella Jane Munro was different from Charlie. Just as bitchy, just as demanding. Filthy fucking rich. But Charlie revealed in who and what she was born to. She never wanted anything but to be the queen bee at her private school, at the club, and Vanderbilt. Everything she did was carefully calculated for how it would reflect on her and how people viewed her. It’s why she and Ella Jane had never gotten along, despite being in the same circles. From the outside, they would have made the perfect frenemies. Self-destructive, the kind of too close back-stabbing that would fuel the wet dreams of high school boys with visions of love hate sexcapdes. Ella Jane and Charlie didn't cooperate. Ella was bored to death with country club life and everything expected of a deb. And she might be an it girl, in her blasĂ© way, but she never aspired to steal Charlie's crown. They existed for most of their life, in a kind of live and let live dĂ©tente. No one could explain why that changed. It was whispered about, of course. Two of Charleston's favorite daughters, suddenly inseparable? Everyone had a theory. No one knew the truth, though. No one would have ever believed the truth. * The door to her office opened and closed again, in the kind of way that was an announcement. She swallowed a smirk and layered another coat of pale pink on her nails. Most girls would pay for a manicure, but she had always found the ritual of her nail care to be soothing. The cash slapped down on her desk and she blinked at it slowly before letting her gaze slide lazily up to the woman across from her. Sharp green eyes, long jet black hair with a single streak of magenta in bangs cut across her forehead. A pair of designer skinny jeans and a loose, sheer black tank top scattered with polka dot skull and cross bones, lace edged cami under it showing off her amazing tits. Only Ella Jane could stalk into her office in designer jeans and a Walmart clearance top and look perfect instead of ridiculous. “Your half.” She says. Charlie finishes her last finger, admiring it briefly before screwing the lid on her nail polish and giving the other woman her attention. “When are you meeting with Jacobs?” “Tomorrow. Don’t be impatient, greedy girl.” She bites down on the acidic response that wants to rise, and arches an eyebrow silently. EJ stares at her for a long moment, before she huffs a sigh and drops into the high back leather chair across from her. “You can’t do anything until Monday anyway. Isn’t your engagement thing tonight.” It’s posed as a question, but she knows damn well when it is. Charlie goes still and her gaze clouds for a heartbeat. “Do you want me to come?” EJ asks, quietly. The offer startles a laugh from Charlie and she grins, a dry, mocking thing. “And how the hell would I explain that? No. Stay on your side of the club, and I’ll stay on mine. I’ll be fine.” There’ a tense moment, as they stare at each other, and Charlie wonders just how much EJ suspects. They weren’t supposed to become friends—it was a business arrangement. One that benefited them both and made EJ’s supplier happy. But it had evolved. It made her nervous, and nothing made her nervous. She didn’t like it. “Don’t be a bitch, Charlie,” EJ says coldly. “Then don’t fucking hover.” Charlie snaps. Anger flares in EJ’s eyes, for a moment, and then it vanished, and she stands. “Fine. Have fun with your boy.” Her tone is mocking and knowing and it stings a little as she watches EJ leave. For a moment, it occurs to her that she should apologize. She dismisses it just as quickly and grabs the stack of cash, standing and moving to the wall where her safe is. It’s crammed with cash and a small black revolver. As she adds the new stack to the others, she touches the gun. It’s soothing, and her unease and nerves settle at the touch of the cool metal. It’ a standard black Glock. Most of her girlfriends carry a tiny pink pistols they can tuck into their Coach bags with equally ridiculous sized dogs. But Travis Brooks always said that if she wanted to be man enough to carry a gun, she’d damn well carry a man’s gun. “Charlotte? We have a meeting with the partners.” She snaps the safe shut, keying the lock and spins to smile at her fiancĂ©e. Wallace Bryce Talbert the Third. Tre to his friends and enemies alike. A golden boy in her father’s law firm, and the man she had promised to spend her entire life with. He’s grinning at her, holding a hand out and she swallows her nerves and fear as she places her hand in his and follows him out of the office. * EJ pads out of her bedroom, her naked body wrapped in moonlight. A bottle of spumante sits discarded in a silver wine chiller, and she grabs it as she moves to her purse and pull out a pack of cigarettes. She smokes almost pensively, staring out the window. Behind her, she can hear him moving and she keeps her gaze trained on the window as smoke curls around her, dissipating slowly. “You should come back to bed,” he says, and she can hear the tease in his tone. She barely manages to keep from rolling her eyes as she wraps her lips around the cigarette again, pulling one last time before dropping it into a forgotten champagne flute. “You should go. I’ve got an early morning tomorrow.” Surprise and anger chase across his face, and she waits to see if he’ll follow through. Clayton Poole was the heir of an ancient oil tycoon, and would be much more interesting if he would lose his temper every once in a while. He was a fun fuck, always took care to get her off, and he opened doors even she couldn’t walk though. But he was boring as fuck when they weren’t naked. “I’ll call you tomorrow,” he says, lamely, and she flick a look at him as she pours a glass of spumante. “Don’t. I’ll call you soon.” She gives him a smile and kisses his cheek before returning to her bedroom. She lets out a sigh when the door shuts behind him, and settles on her bed. It smells of sex still, but she’s too drunk and lazy just now to strip the sheets. Besides, she likes the smell of sex, even if Clayton isn’t her favorite fuck buddy. There is a joint in her bedside table and she fishes it out and lights it, pulling on it deeply as she thumbs through her social media. The entire newsfeed is abuzz with the engagement party of the year, and she grits her teeth. She should have been there. Clayton had been invited—Charlie will be pissed he didn’t show, a thought that strings a smirk across her lips—and she could have crashed it. Nothing to be done once she was there. Once upon a time, it would have been amusing just to get a rise from Charlie. When the fuck had that changed? When she realized that Charlie was just as unhappy in their fucking perfect life as she was? Or was it when Charlie blackmailed EJ into sharing her distribution, earning her respect as more than another empty headed social climber. She huffs, and takes another pull on the joint. The smell of weed fill the bedroom, covering the scent of sex. Her muscles are loose and relaxed against the bed and she let’s her phone drop beside her, drifting on her high, drunk and post-orgasmic relaxation combining to pull her down into sleep. The room is pitch black, her body hot and sweating against the rough duvet when she wakes. Her mouth is dry and for a disorienting moment, she wonders where the hell she is, and what happened. Her phone buzzes against her thigh again, and she fumbles for it. “Charlie?” she croaks, and swallows. Reaches for the spumante on the bedside table. “I need you.” The whisper from the other end of the line chills her, and she shudders, rubbing away the goosebumps that trace along her arms. That’s it—those three words and nothing more. Sleep is forgotten completely as she sits up and nods. “I’ll be right there.”

My Review:

I was so excited when I was given the opportunity to review this book.  I fell in love with Stacey O'Neale after reading her Young Adult series, Mortal Enchantment and was thrilled to find out that she would be trying her had at Adult Romance and even more so when I discovered it would be a story revolving around 3 alien brothers.  YES!

This is the story of three brothers who had to flee their home planet as it destructs around them.  They have lost their planet, their people, their families and have to learn to assimilate into a new culture when they land on earth.  All three Chase brothers have found their own human personality, Kaden, is the 'Patriarch' of the family.  He's the oldest, the worrier, the rule keeper (which will lead him into quite the conundrum), he is the base of the family.  Hayden is a typical middle child in that he isn't the focus in this book.  While he play s a pivotal role we hear and see very little of him.  He's the science geek, the quiet brother working behind the scenes.  Then there is Camden, youngest brother, wild child, rule breaker, cad about town.

Annabelle Sparks is the owner of Yummy Bakery is a busy as ever after winning Cupcake Wars and bringing attention to her small Germantown, MD bakery.  Every thing in her professional life is falling in place, but in her person life she's floundering.  She secretly has feelings for Kaden, who she has been friends with for over a year.  She's always found him attractive but afraid of loosing his friendship that has come to mean so much to her she's tried to keep those feelings tamped down, somewhat unsuccessfully.  She's tired of being alone though and if Kaden won't step up to the game and ask her out, despite the simmering heat between them she'll have to push dreams of him aside and start looking for love in other places.  With the help of her best friend Hilary, she sets out to find a date and maybe, if Hilary has her way, spur Kaden into action.

I loved all the characters in this story and Stacey does a really fantastic job of fleshing them out and bringing life to them.  I felt like I could easily be friends with this group of people, even Hilary and Camden who can be a bit of an overwhelming presence at times.  They are both larger than life and I can't wait for their story, it's going to be wild.

I was reminded of Jennifer L. Armentrout's Lux series as I read this, so if you are a fan of that series you will enjoy this sexier 'adult' read.  I thoroughly enjoyed the action and suspense and of course the romance.  I am glad to say that while this would be placed into a Sci-Fi category, it won't overwhelm you with facts, Stacey gives us just enough detail about the alien planet and people to help us understand the story, but not so much that it drowns out the rest of the story, mainly the building romance between Kaden and Annabelle.  I can't say much about this with out giving out spoiler-y info, but I love that we get to see how the loss of their home planet and 'presumably' all of their people has affected the boys and the story.  It is clear that we will be seeing more of the FBI and perhaps more aliens, i.e. more intrigue.

This is a pretty quick read, one that you will not want to put down, one that you will fall in love with as you learn more and more about the Chase brothers.  This is a fantastic read for any Sci-Fi fan that is looking for a bit more romance in their read, it's perfect for Contemporary Romance Fans, NA fans, Adult Romance, and Paranormal Romance fans.  I know like me, once you read this book you will be so ready for the next ones.  I have to say I am already disappointed that this is likely a trilogy, because I think I could keep getting lost in this world for quite some time!

~ HAPPY READING ~

This Is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen - A Mom Monday Review

A MOM MONDAY REVIEW

Author: Jon Klassen
Publication Date:  9 October, 2012
Publisher: Candlewick Press
Genre:  Children's, Picture Book
Age Recommendation: 3 and up
Rating: 5 Stars

Book Description:

When a tiny fish shoots into view wearing a round blue topper (which happens to fit him perfectly), trouble could be following close behind. So it's a good thing that enormous fish won't wake up. And even if he does, it's not like he'll ever know what happened...

My Review:

This is an 'oldie' (2012) but such a good book that I can't not now, three years later review this as one of our household's favorite Picture Books.

One stinker of a little fish comes across an amazing hat.  A hat that he wants for his own, a hat that fits him perfectly and looks oh so good on his little fishy head.  But this hat, it belongs to another fish, a big sleeping fish, a fish that our little stinker of a fish buddy stole the hat from and is now rushing away from.

My 6 and 9 year old girls, heck even my self and my husband enjoy this book every time we open it up to read it.  We adore the amount of expression shown in each fish (and crabs) eyes.  It is amazing how much Jon Klassen was able to say with each turn of the page.  If the fishy looks weren't enough the dry witty voice Jon Klassen uses to tell this story is perfection.  I love that while the sentences are simple and easy for even your youngest reader (listener) the words are not 'dumbed' down so to speak.  Jon Klassen speaks to us in an 'adult voice' with humor that brings all ages together to enjoy a brilliant Children's Book.

I think the best praise I can give is to tell you that my six year old reads this book constantly and has even mentioned that the only thing that could make this book better is if the series continued.  This book is packed up for every trip we go on, it's almost like a security blanket for her she loves it so much and I have read it what feels like hundreds of times but I have never groaned about having to read it again because it always makes me smile and giggle along with my girls and that makes this a truly priceless story for us.

This is a great book for any household.  Obviously it is written toward children, but I can see many households, even with out children, wanting to have this clever little book on their shelves.  Grab a copy you won't regret it.

 ~ Happy Reading ~

Excerpt from LOVING CARA (Book 1):

“This is a great place,” I murmur, and turn in a complete circle, taking everything in. The forest is thick here, but with a clearing by a wide pool of water, which is being fed by a creek that empties into it via a beautiful waterfall about twenty yards away. Slabs of rock frame the pond, making a natural ledge to sit on and enjoy nature. “This is where I’ve always come whenever I’m happy or mad or just need to think.” Josh wraps his arms around me from behind and kisses the top of my head. “You brought me to your happy place?” I ask, half kidding, and turn my head to kiss his biceps. I can’t seem to keep my lips off this man. And he doesn’t seem to mind. “It seems that anywhere you are is my happy place these days, Carolina.” I gasp and look up into his soft brown eyes. “So, I brought the person who makes me happy to my happy place,” he clarifies. Well . . . wow. Before I can respond, he kisses my lips quickly and then pulls away to grab a blanket out of a saddlebag. He takes me by the hand and leads me up onto the rocks by the water. He spreads the blanket out and pulls me down next to him. “Are you hungry?” he asks, and pushes my hair back over my shoulder. “Not quite yet.” He nods and his eyes heat as they rake down my face, my neck, and over my tank top, which I know shows off the girls nicely. If he was going to keep me perpetually turned on today, I was happy to return the favor. “You are so beautiful,” he whispers, and leans in to claim my mouth gently. His lips are gentle and soft, sweeping across my own rhythmically yet slowly, sending shivers down my arms and making my stomach clench. He has only touched me with his lips and my stomach is clenched. I’m panting, ready for him to take me right here, in the middle of nature. He cups my cheeks in the palm of his hand and pulls me closer, sinking into the kiss, but then he abruptly pulls back, his brows pulled into a frown. “You really are warm,” he mutters, and feels my neck and forehead. I laugh at him as I rub my hand up and down his firm chest. “It’s hot outside, Josh.” “Let’s cool off.” He smiles down at me wickedly and begins to peel me out of my clothes. “We might give the wildlife quite a show,” I warn him mildly, excitement coursing through me. “That’s the plan.” He winks at me and quickly strips out of his own clothes. He pulls me up onto my feet and peels my jeans and panties down my legs. “Now what?” I ask with a wide smile. “Now we cool off.”
