Book Description:

Hell hath no hunger like a man let out of a cage . . .

Shy and awkward, First Daughter Grace Reeves has always done what she’s told. Tired of taking orders, she escapes her security detail for a rare moment of peace. Except her worst nightmare comes to life when a ruthless gang of criminals abducts her. Her only choice is to place her trust in Reid Allister, an escaped convict whose piercing gaze awakens something deep inside her. Reid is nothing like her other captors.

He’s tougher, smarter…and one blistering look from him makes her hotter than any man ever has.

Reid spent years plotting escape and revenge . . .years without a woman in his bed. For this hardened felon, Grace Reeves isn’t just out of his league—she’s from another planet, but that doesn’t stop him from wanting her. Escaping Devil’s Rock was tough, but resisting this woman could be the end of him. For a man with nothing to lose, protecting her . . . claiming her as his own, becomes more necessary than his next breath.

My Review:

The second installment in Sophie Jordan's Devil's Rock series and I can say that once again I loved it.    It didn't take me long to fall for Reid and that happened in the first book, All Chained Up.  Here's this bad guy (or is he?) that basically runs Devil's Rock prison, and yet he's this good man that took two young brothers under his wings, earning their respect and faith.  When we left Devil's Rock in All Chained Up Reid's plans, plans he has worked at for 11 year were coming to fruition.  His future is on the verge of being laid out before him. A future that started with a prison riot and one that sadly and unwittingly ended up severely injuring the one man he had promised to protect, Knox's little brother, (whose story I know we are all longing for!!) North.

Reid is on a mission but it's not the mission you may expect.  He's escaped prison, he's running for his life, he's weighed down heavy by guilt.  The guilt related to the prison riot, the guilt related to his choices as a young adult, the guilt of leaving his brother behind...all of these things have turned him in to a rough and broody man and it's just the kind of book hero I like.

When I first read where Sophie was going with this book, kidnapped First Daughter, Prison Escapee, bumbling cruel gang...I wasn't sure she was going to be able to pull it all off cleanly.  I couldn't quite (in my mind) put all the pieces together to make a believable and interesting story. I was fearful that this was going to end up feeling like a Stockholm Syndrome story except none of the characters realize it for what it is. Well, that would be why she's the author and not me.  She totally made this work.  All the pieces come together smoothly, Stockholm Syndrome is brought up and eventually dismissed.  I didn't feel at all like she was trying to take this crazy story and make it work because it didn't turn out crazy at all and it totally worked.

I loved Grace Reeves.  She's this awkward, intelligent, beautiful, (even though she doesn't realize it, because honestly how many of us believe that we are) shy, and lonely.  She's being basically forced into a roll she does't want, a prison, though one with out bars and cinder block walls.  In an attempt to breathe just for a moment, Grace 'escapes' from her security detail and ends up falling into the hands of a somewhat bumbling yet cutthroat band of outlaws.  You can't help but fall in love with Grace through out this book.  It is amazing to watch her grow from this awkward, naive girl into a strong, determined woman.

We know I loved Reid so I won't go on too much more about him, but getting his whole story, knowing where he came from and how he got there just makes him that much more of an amazing character.  The love he has for his brother, despite the way their lives have unfolded and the choices that were made is as important to this story as the developing relationship between Reid and Grace. I am somewhat hopeful that we may see him again in the future, it felt to me like he needs to tell his story as well, but then again we already know why I am a reader and not a writer, haha.

The chemistry between Grace and Reid was immediate but I am happy to say the romance itself was not.  When we did get to it you wanted it so badly to happen because Sophie gave us a good almost half a book building the tension between the two.  I loved that both characters fought the attraction so strongly because, seriously...you've just escaped prison, found yourself the guardian of the kidnapped First Daughter or you've just been kidnapped and placed into the clutches of a ruthless gang and then into the arms of a surly prison escapee. Yeah you may find each other attractive but I am thinking steamy sexy times would not be your go to right away, haha.

In the end this is the story of two people breaking out of their prisons, one figuratively and one literally.  It is a story about breaking past barriers, ones placed on us by society and family and ones placed on ourselves.  It is a story about letting go so that you can see the future, so you can know that you have a future.  It is a story about finding that love and family mean more than revenge or capitulation.  It is a story about fighting the good fight, choosing the harder right than the easier wrong, making compromises, and taking chances.

This is a great read for anyone that loves contemporary romances or perhaps especially the broody bad boy who's a really good man and the everyday girl who fights her battles the only way she knows how but then discovers that she is stronger than she ever realized!  Hell Breaks Loose will keep you turing the pages, the romance, action, storyline... it is all there and it will captivate you and have you ready for more.  Thankfully North's book Fury on Fire isn't that far off in the future, January!

This book can be read as as standalone, although the series ties together you won't miss anything or ruin anything by reading them out of order but as always you know I would say read them as a series in order because it will give you the full story and effect.  You'll be fine and I might sigh a little but be okay if you decide to go in at book 2 though, haha.

Sophie Jordan took her adolescent daydreaming one step further and penned her first historical romance in the back of her high school Spanish class. This passion led her to pursue a degree in English and History.

A brief stint in law school taught her that case law was not nearly as interesting as literature - teaching English seemed the natural recourse. After several years teaching high school students to love Antigone, Sophie resigned with the birth of her first child and decided it was time to pursue the long-held dream of writing.

In less than three years, her first book, Once Upon A Wedding Night, a 2006 Romantic Times Reviewers' Choice Nominee for Best First Historical, hit book shelves. Her second novel, Too Wicked To Tame, released in March 2007 with a bang, landing on the USA Today Bestseller's List.

Book Description:

Mattie Carver’s engagement party should have marked the start of her own personal fairy tale. But when her fiancé, Ben, is violently abducted the next morning, her desperate quest to find him rips her away from small-town life and reveals a shattering truth: magic is real—and Ben is hooked. It’s not the stuff of storybooks. It’s wildly addictive, capable of producing everything from hellish anguish to sensual ecstasy almost beyond human endurance.

Determined to find out who took Ben and why, Mattie immerses herself in a shadowy underworld and comes face-to-face with the darkly alluring Asa Ward, a rogue magic dealer, infamous hustler…and her missing fiancé’s estranged brother. Asa has the power to sense magic, and he realizes Mattie is a reliquary, someone with the rare ability to carry magic within her own body, undetected. Asa agrees to help find Ben on one condition: Mattie must use her uncommon talent to assist his smuggling operations. Now, from magic-laced Vegas casinos to the netherworld clubs of Bangkok, Mattie is on a rescue mission. With Asa by her side, she’ll face not only the supernatural forces arrayed against her but the all-too-human temptation that she fears she can’t resist.

My Review:

What would you do?  You wake up the day after your engagement party and your fiancé is gone, the police seem unconcerned, evidence is piling up that your fiancé is not who you believe he is....what would you do?  If you're Mattie Carver you set out on a mission to rescue your fiancé and end up falling (literally) into a world you never knew existed, into an ability that changes who you are, and into the clutches of a man who turns out to be as dark and troubled as you have been lead to believe but he is nothing like what you expect.

So I have gone back and forth with this one, did I love it or did I just like it.  I loved so many parts of it, but then there where these few little things that set my teeth to grinding and making me question how I felt about it all.

What did I love?  I loved Mattie, she's kind, she's loyal (to a huge fault), she's a bit clumsy, she has an amazing relationship with her family, she's brave in a caviler way which leads her to ending up in surprising (to her) situations....She's an every girl with a little something extra.

I loved, LOVED, Asa!  I have always been a sucker for the bad boy that really isn't so bad and Asa is a perfect version of this.  He's the misunderstood anti-hero that steals the readers heart as he leads them on a broody yet merry chase.  He suffers silently, he quietly takes on the world and protects the ones he cares for.  he's best friend, Gracie...a Pitbull who like Asa, has clearly taken the world on her shoulders and just wants love.

The world building and magic.  I loved the concept of this book.  This world isn't something that I've come across before.  There are four types of magic: sensing, pleasure, manipulation and Pain then there are three types of human vessels, Reliquaries, Conduits, and Naturals.  I enjoyed that Sarah created this world of magic as sort of the underbelly of society, it gave me the feel of a grungy 19th century time period (although this is all very much contemporary) where gangs ruled ad opium dens were the dirty little secret.  This seedy world lends to the suspense aspects of the book and creates a believable flow.  I also like that Mattie who is in all essence a 'golden child' gets thrust into this world where her halo gets a bit tarnished but at the same time she brings a light into the darkness there and if we are all very VERY lucky leaves her mark on it and in particular on 'him'.

What I wasn't a fan of.  Ben.  I don't need to say much more than that.  I don't think that Sarah has an intention of us liking him.  From the moment the book begins we know that he's hiding secrets.  Before I realized where the book was going I had hope for him but nope, now I just want him gone.

Most of what I don't like actually revolves around Ben to be honest.  I didn't like how unfailingly loyal Mattie is to him even as she discovers more and more that should sway her opinion....a huge one being that he used magic on her and the kind of magic, lets just say as politely as I can...he was taking serious advantage of her, grrrr.

The end.  The end ticked me off.  Now that's not to say I won't come back and read the next book because I so will.  It isn't an ending that ruins everything (like that book I shall not name) and leaves you tossing your Kindle/Book across the room then stomping on it madly.  It's an ending that makes you want to reach through the pages and shake a few characters until the get their heads on straight.  It is an ending that WILL have you coming back for the second and third book because it leaves you angry but hopeful.

Finally and I while it wasn't a huge deal for me I know for some people this is an issue....There is a love triangle.  Now, you should know straight off that this love triangle does not involve cheating.  Mattie is dedicated (regardless of whether she should be or not) to Ben, Asa never pushes her to be anything else...but there is a emotional connection between Asa and Mattie that makes you wish she would just throw it all to the wind.  If you are not a fan of the love triangle trope you may want to hold off on reading the books until the entire series is out which lucky for all of us is not long.  Book two, Splinter, releases 2 August and the final book, Mosaic, releases 15 November.

If you are looking for something fresh in the paranormal/fantasy world this would be a great addition to your bookshelves.  If you enjoy subtle, building contemporary romances check this book out.

Book Description:

When eleven-year-old TJ finds a weird looking egg in the Florida Everglades after a tropical storm rips through, naturally he takes it home for identification. It could be the egg of a mutant duck or something, which would be awesome. Problem is, the egg doesn’t look like it came from a mallard, even a mutated one—it’s too big and heavy and…strange. So he hides it away in his closet and continues on with his life as usual, doing his best to ignore the creepy men constantly banging at his front door and the significant rise in military helicopter sightings in his typically quiet neighbourhood.

Then one day he comes home from school and it’s as though a hand grenade has gone off inside his bedroom. Suddenly, TJ knows he’s dealing with something a little more interesting—and a little more deadly—than a duck.

He left the Adirondacks to grow into a man, did so, and has since returned with a wonderfully supportive wife and two sons.

About Carrie Ann Ryan:

New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Carrie Ann Ryan never thought she’d be a writer. Not really. No, she loved math and science and even went on to graduate school in chemistry. Yes, she read as a kid and devoured teen fiction and Harry Potter, but it wasn’t until someone handed her a romance book in her late teens that she realized that there was something out there just for her. Book Description:

You can predict the tides but not the changes they make. Gunnison Del Valle was the current in the tide that was about to change my life.
Crash one we met.
Crash two we fell in love.
Crash three changed our perfectly planned lives forever.

Excerpt:

As we approach, I realize it’s a private celebration of some sort, and I pray we won’t be noticed. As the music gets louder and the flame rises higher, we ease our way into the crowd and take a seat on a piece of driftwood facing each other. As sparks fly into the night sky, I notice Marleigh watching them. “What are you thinking about?” I ask. “Have you ever thought about what happens to those embers?” “They burn out?” I say unsure of where this is going. “Yeah, but I can’t help but feel like that roaring fire when I’m with you. You probably think I’m crazy since it’s only been a week,” she says while covering her face with her hands as if she’s embarrassed. Taking her face in my hands, I raise her eyes to mine. “Mar, I don’t think you’re crazy. In fact, I feel the same way.” “You do?” “Yes, but we aren’t like the embers. When this week ends, it will be a beginning for us.” “How can you say that? You’re going to be like twenty hours away or somethin’.” “More like nine, but who’s counting.” As a smile crosses her face, I’m happily caught off guard when she crashes her lips into mine. Our kiss heats up like the fire beside us and my heart soars like the sparks into the sky.

About Casey Peeler:

Casey Peeler grew up in North Carolina and still lives there with her husband and daughter. Growing up Casey wasn't an avid reader or writer, but after reading Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neal Hurston during her senior year of high school, and multiple Nicholas Sparks' novels, she found a hidden love and appreciation for reading. That love ignited the passion for writing several years later, and her writing style combines real life scenarios with morals and values teenagers need in their daily lives. Filthy English by Ilsa Madden-Mills - Review and Excerpt

Series: English, book 2

Book Description:

Two weeks before her wedding, Remi Montague’s fiancé drops her faster than a drunken sorority girl in stilettos. Armed with her best friend and a bottle of tequila, she hops a plane to London to drown her sorrows before fall semester begins at Whitman University.

She didn't plan on attending a masquerade party.

She sure didn’t plan on waking up next to the British bad boy who broke her heart three years ago—the devastatingly handsome and naked Dax Blay. Furthermore, she has no clue how they acquired matching tattoos.

Once back at Whitman together, they endeavor to pretend they never had their night of unbridled passion in London.

But that’s damn hard to do when you live in the same house…

One night. Two damaged hearts. The passion of a lifetime.

My Review:

Filthy English is a great addition to Ilsa's English series.  I was so excited to get Dax's story after meeting him in Declan's book, Dirty English, but I also worried that Dax just wouldn't be able to compare to Declan  and I'd find my self disappointed.  I am so happy to tell you that is not the case.  While Declan will always (I think) be my favorite of the English boys (although...Spider, yeah Spider... may out do all book boyfriends, yeah, I just said that. His is going to be an epic story.) Dax wasn't about to let himself be over run by his twin.

I loved Dax, there is a tenderness to him that he tries to hide and a serious vulnerability to just wanting to be loved but not knowing how to get it or handle it when he does.  Both of the twins were, of course, affected by the passing of their mother but I believe that the effect was more devastating for Dax than Declan.  While Declan had his love of MMA to turn to Dax has floundered through the years in everything from school to relationships. He's become a playboy, a cad, a party boy...a lost soul.  One brief bit of insanity years ago leads to a glimpse of sanity and when the one girl he has never been able to forget literally tumbles into his lap she reminds him that there is more to him  and his life than it seems.

Remi is coming to terms with having been essentially left at the alter by the one guy she thought could give her the safety and dependability her life needs.

“I had a great plan, you know – the plan. Marry a responsible, nice guy, get my doctorate, discover a new bird species, take care of Malcolm, have four kids, but guess what? My plan is shit. My goals are shit. Even my back-up plan sucks. It’s flawed because the perfect guy decided I’m not the perfect choice for him.”

Remi has not had an easy life.  Her relationship with her mother is strained, she is dedicated (as should be) to caring for her Autistic Brother (Who is just awesome, I love him...can he get a book Ilsa?) and her school work.  She has dreams and is fighting to make them happen.  One night years ago changed her life forever when a hot British guy gave her everything for 3 days and then took it all away and hardened her heart.

So my only complaint when it comes to this book and what makes it a 4 star read for me is that it took almost the entire book for me to like Remi.  For all purposes I should have liked her right off the bat.  Her struggles, her fight, her heart...it's all there but sadly to me she came off as a bit whiney and extremely frustrating.  I hated the way she treated Dax especially when it comes to her relationship with her ex.  The amount of miscommunication from her side ended up being just a bit too much for me to bear.  Thankfully I loved the other characters in the story.  Dax, Spider, Declan, and Remi's brother.  Even with the my not being able to connect with Remi like I wanted to, I really enjoyed the romance between Dax and Remi.  It is clear that what Dax needs is her and we all want Dax to get what Dax wants and needs.

Filthy English is a great addition to this series and I am definitely looking forward to more.  If you love New Adult or Contemporary Romance you will absolutely want to give this series a go.  Filthy English and Dirty English can be read as standalones, reading them out of order will not affect your reading pleasure...I do think however from the 'look' of things that when it comes to Spiders book (I am guessing book three) that you will want to have read both books before you read his, of course that is future looking so....  All you need to know now is these English Boys are worth taking a look at!

~HAPPY READING ~

Excerpt:

Without much thought except for comfort, instinctively I pressed myself against him, fitting into his arms as easy as breathing. He leaned against the brick wall of the neighboring building and wrapped me up, sensing my need to be grounded.

I don’t know how long we stood like that—maybe a minute, maybe five—but soon our breaths were in sync; the rise and fall of his chest in perfect accord with mine.

One of his hands traced down my spine and then up. He outlined my shoulder blades with his fingertips. His hands drifted to my hips then caressed back up to my hair, massaging my scalp.

But what had started as an innocent hug changed.

Fire licked my skin everywhere he touched. Of their own accord, my hands slid down to his waist and teased the line where his jeans rested on his hips. I went further, my fingers toying with the V at his hip until I felt him harden against me.

Lips brushed the top of my hair. “Remi . . . look at me,” he said, his voice raspy.

If you look up, you’re going to kiss him . . .

I tilted my head up and his mouth fused with mine in an instant.

Insistent. Wild. Hot. Yes! This is what I needed.

I groaned, and my hands rushed to his shoulders and dug in.

He was wrong—terribly wrong—for me, but it felt so right.

I felt wonderfully alive, revved up, as if I could crush a car with my bare hands, or push Dax against the wall and fuck him senseless. I recognized the feeling for what it was—an I almost-died-and-now-I-want-to-experience-life feeling.

“Wait,” he breathed as I ran my hand under his shirt. “It’s adrenaline. You’ve been through a trauma. You don’t really want this—”

“Shhh.” I lifted his shirt and kissed his chest, my tongue flicking over his nipple. “You taste like every good thing I’ve ever wanted.”

His taut restraint snapped, and he swayed into me. “God, I can’t tell you no.”
