Book Description:

Dorian Anson is my friend. She's the only person who's ever questioned my smiles. My jokes. The one liners that have our friends shaking their heads at me. I've lived my life on those smiles. They never failed me, until her. I wasn't counting on her when I designed my front. I never imagined the possibility of someone like her coming into my life. The wild hair, the kind smile and those eyes that see everything. She was the girl with the beautiful soul, pretty face and whole heart. But hearts aren't made to stay whole. I watched hers break. I watched her tears fall. I watched as her world tilted on its axis and shattered at her feet. This girl. She sees me, all parts of me—the truths I try to hide, the secrets I bury. What's mine and what's not. She sees it all, and I can only hope the truth isn't too much. That she won't walk away. That she won't leave me...alone. We both have a past. We have ghosts. We have fears. I'm hoping that somehow in the end, we'll have each other too. I've never needed anyone before her, and I know I'll never want anyone else after her. There is no one like her. My pretty girl. Dorian.

Exclusive Excerpt:

Over the years our girls’ nights had become more of a child friendly affair. Gone were the cocktails and in was the tea. Willow and one of our friends, Beth, had stumbled on this gem of a tearoom a while back and we’d made it a point to hold our monthly catch-up sessions here. It was a small little teashop in a quiet little residential backstreet close to Willow’s flat in Kensington. Molly and Pippa enjoyed the vintage dress up box and us older girls liked the natter. Quincy, Willow and I were childhood friends. Quincy was probably the strongest person I knew. We’d lost Phillip, her brother, and on top of that she’d suffered a stillbirth and divorced her cheating, scumbag of a husband after finding out she was pregnant with Pippa. I thought that I’d die when I’d found out that Phillip was gone, I couldn’t remember anything but the sheer pain. There were times that it still hurt as much now as it did then. Especially when Phillip’s absence, his death, impacted our son. Losing the man you thought you’d love for the rest of your life was a bitch, but merely thinking of the possibility of losing Daniel, that was enough to truly kill me. My sweet boy. “Oh god, this has got to be the best brownie I’ve ever had.” Quincy moaned as she shoved the rest of the small square in her mouth. “If we come here more often, I’ll have to join a gym.” “I think it might be worth it though.” I giggled, as I watched Molly and Pippa wrap white feather boas around Beth’s and Willow’s shoulders. “What’re you giggling about over there?” Willow looked between me and Quincy, her eyes narrowed at us like she suspected we were keeping something from her. “Nothing.” “The cake.” “You say nothing,” she gestured toward me and then over at Quincy, “she says cake. Which is it?” “Cake.” Quincy and I both sighed. It was good cake, almost better than sex, or what I remembered of it. “I can think of something better than cake…” Beth snickered, waggling her brows at Willow. Her Welsh twang was something that made me smile to this day, I swear she could make the Hail Mary sound dirty. Molly looked between us, her face pinched in confusion as she said, “Uncle Jake says there’s nothing better than cake and ice cream.” “Speaking of,” Beth stood from her makeover chair and sat back at the table with us, “how did the football thing go?” “Good.” “Just good?” Quincy asked as she examined one of the mini scones glistening with jam and clotted cream atop. “Yes.” “Why’re you being so evasive about it?” Willow gave me one of her curious looks. “I’m not, the match went well, they won. It was nice of him.” I glanced over at Pippa and Molly who were going through the dress up box again. “Yeah, it was really nice of him.” Beth sang a little too teasingly. “Stop it.” “Come on, Dorian, you have to admit he’s a little bit nice himself.” “Beth.” I warned as she shrugged like I was the one being silly. I didn’t want to talk about him with them. I didn’t want to think about him any more than I already did, especially about how pleasant he was to look at or spend time with. “She’s got a point, Dory, he’s actually…you know…” Quincy smiled, her cheeks blushing like she was saying something inappropriate. “Yeah, he’s hot until he opens his mouth and then you want to slap him or snap his tongue off.” Willow rolled her eyes as she poured herself another cup of tea. I internally chuckled at her indignation, she and Jake were very alike in the way they interacted with people. They didn’t let many people in, but when they did, they were loyal to a fault. Not to mention that they were both great at pressing people’s buttons. “I love Uncle Jake, he’s my goddaddy like you, Dory.” Molly chimed as she and Pippa sat at the table with us. “I’m your godmother, sweetie.” I couldn’t help but tap her little button nose with the tip of my finger, something she always pulled a sort of sour face about, but never complained. God, I’m that aunt that pinches cheeks and coos like a bloody overbearing fool. The thought alone made me cringe as I then started to imagine myself as the cat lady on the second floor of my building. Nice to everyone, but essentially invisible and alone. As unlikely as that would be with this lot around, it still struck a dissonant chord and it made me uneasy. When did I become this person? I asked myself, the answer immediately flashing in my mind as a pair of distant, beautiful brown eyes and a soft cheeky smile. Phillip. “I still struggle with that decision.” Willow groaned. “He’s great with the kids,” I sighed, trying to ignore the pang my thoughts had brought with them. “Because he’s a child himself.” “You know he’s not that bad.” I’d known Jake for over a decade. We’d spent a lot of time with one another. I’d learned that there was a lot more to him than what most people saw, and a part of me didn’t know what to make of that. I didn’t understand why he’d allowed me to see him in all those lights, but it made me happy, even if that happiness brought a sting of guilt with it. “But, he is hot, and he likes spending time with you.” Beth smiled. “Anyone would think he might like you…like you. Plus, you need to get back into the tango of things.” “I can barely balance Daniel and work, and thinking about people like that…well, I don’t know, it seems wrong. Oh, and I have a child.” Thinking about Jake like that didn’t feel wrong, what felt wrong was thinking about him in one breath and in the next thinking about Phillip. Sometimes I wondered if I would still think of Jake like that if Phillip were still here. If we’d even be friends like we are. The worst part of it was the panicked feeling at the possibility that we might not be the way we are if Phillip hadn’t died. It was a panic laced with guilt and self-loathing because what if I still felt all the same things toward Jake even if Phillip was here? It doesn’t mean you’d still be together. The thought made me cringe. I couldn’t imagine not being with him, not when we had Daniel. “I have Daniel.”

The apartment was small—one room and probably barely legal—so it only took a few seconds to follow the coughing to the person on the floor near the window. While Aidan did a quick check of the bathroom and under the bed to make sure there was nobody else, Grant crouched down next to the person he was pretty sure was a woman, despite having a throw blanket over her head.

“Fire department,” he said. “Let’s get you out of here.”

Her cough was so weak and ineffectual, he didn’t bother asking if she could get up and walk. Instead he rolled her, intending to lift her and carry her out.

Then the throw blanket slipped away from a sleep-tangled mess of blonde curls, revealing dark blue eyes he saw in his dreams, and Grant’s world stopped.

“Wren.”

He hadn’t seen her in five months, since she’d told him on the phone she didn’t want to see him anymore and then ghosted. No explanation. No compromise. Nothing but five months of a broken heart that hadn’t even begun to heal yet.

What the hell was she doing in this place?

Grant. Her mouth formed his name, though no sound got through her constricted throat. The grayish cast of her skin and lips terrified him, and he started to hoist her up.

Aidan was at his side. “I’ll carry her out.”

“I’ve got her.” Despite the shock and pain from seeing her again, Grant wanted to hold her. He wanted to cradle her in his arms and feel that sense of contentment holding her had always brought him in the past.

There was no time for that. After draping her over his shoulder, he stood and headed for the door. It wouldn’t be a comfortable ride for her, but the only thing that mattered right now was getting her out of the building and to an ambulance, where they could give her oxygen. Her body had gone totally limp by the time he reached the stairs, but he refused to consider the possibility she’d need medical care beyond that.

They’d gotten there in time, and that’s all there was to it.

He heard voices in his radio and was aware Aidan stayed right behind him, but Grant didn’t stop moving until he hit the clear, frigid air.

He paused to get his bearings and then headed for the ambulances on standby. Some of those voices in his radio must have warned them he was coming, because Cait opened the back of her truck and waved at him.

Cait Tasker was not only an EMT, but she was engaged to Gavin Boudreau, who was Grant’s best friend and with the Ladder 37 crew. E-59 and L-37 were parked side-by-side in the firehouse and always rolled out together, so Gavin was on scene, too. And Cait knew Wren. The four of them had spent a lot of time together before Wren walked away from him and didn’t look back.

By the time he reached the ambulance doors, he could feel her stirring. Not a lot, but she had to be breathing in order to regain consciousness and that was enough for now.

Because it was so damn cold and she was small, they didn’t bother with the stretcher. He handed Wren up to Cait’s partner, Tony, who turned away with her.

“Oh my God, Grant.” Cait looked at him, her expression mirroring his thoughts. “What the hell was Wren doing living here?”

“I don’t know. She’ll be okay, right?”

“We’ll take care of her. Are you okay?”

He didn’t answer. As he watched Tony fit a mask over Wren’s face, her eyes met his and, no, he wasn’t okay.

Questions tumbled through his mind. Why was Wren living in this place? Why had she disappeared from his life so abruptly? How could she still be in the city and not miss him enough to at least send a text message?

Had she known he’d been days away from buying her a ring and asking her to spend the rest of her life with him?

Real moments were scarce.

Wait, let me rephrase. Important moments were scarce. You know the ones. The ones that defined your life and shaped you into who you were always meant to be. Or who you always wanted to be.

That was the beauty of rarity. It forces you to look at your life from new angles – makes you appreciate the struggle you’ve endured before.

As I caught my breath, the delicious heaviness of Easton on me, I knew I was having one of those rare moments that would forever influence my life.

Easton pushed my hair back, his touch featherlight. I couldn’t understand how he could be so forceful – so strong – one minute, taking everything he could, and then so soft the next. Easton Cole was an enigma and I desperately wanted to know more.

“My sweet Brynn,” he whispered in my ear, again and it sent shivers through my body.

I was his.

When he looked at me like that . . . I couldn’t breathe.

He settled between my legs and I hummed with contentment, happy to have him close, comfortable enough to never let him leave.

The alarm on his phone began to ring and our reality smacked me in the face. “What happens next?” I asked in a small voice, feeling even smaller. I didn’t want to leave this room. I didn’t want to pop our bubble. I liked it.

Easton reached for his phone and silenced it. “We go home.”

I blinked, unable to say anything. He didn’t answer my question. Not really. His response was far too literal for my taste, but what was I to do?

So, instead, I kept quiet, watching the sun pour into our room, Easton’s skin turning a beautiful bronze color.

After a while, we broke apart, each of us getting dressed in silence. He stole sweet glances as I piled my hair onto my head and I snuck a few peaks as he brushed and styled his hair in front of the mirror.

Euphoric and sad, I teetered on the brink of begging him to stay here forever. I had no idea what kind of future we faced on the other side of the hotel door.

But my mother’s words rang in my ears, reminding me to take it slow.

Live in the moment, darlin’ girl. Don’t forget to exist in the present while you’re waiting for the future.

Once our things were packed and ready to go, I took a moment to look around the room – our safe haven where so many truths were shared.

I’d forever remember this hotel and the way the room smelled. The way the sheets felt against my skin and the sounds Easton made in my ear as we made love.

I’d remember all of it.

But what I’ll remember most is the way Easton looked at me and the way he made me feel without using any words at all.

EXCERPT:

Chapter Three

I Beg of You

Drago walked down the line of the Luciano women who were lined up perfectly in a row. Each one was different to the next, giving him many options, but none of them had sparked an interest in him so far. He reached the last one in the row; she was easily the hottest one in the bunch. The right age, the right face, and the right fucking body. Hell, the bitch was practically asking to get picked the way her red bra and big tits popped out of her shirt, not to mention the way she kept eye fucking him.

Smiling, he could just imagine how pissed the Lucianos would be to take her ass away from them. This was the day he had been waiting for since the bullets had ripped through his body. Payback’s a bitch. Opening his mouth, he had finally made his decision. “She’ll d—”

“This is all your women?” Lucca asked from the corner of the room, stopping him from sealing the deal.

The room went dead silent, till a throat was cleared and a deep voice escaped the oldest Luciano brother. “Yes.”

“Don’t lie to me, Dominic,” he warned with a deadly whisper as he stepped away from the corner till he stood inches away.

Squaring his shoulders, the new Luciano boss looked him straight in his eyes. “These are all the Luciano women over the age of eighteen. Just like we promised.”

“Alright.” Lucca raised a brow. “Then you don’t mind if I look around, do you?”

There was a slight flex in his jaw. “Not at all.”

As he left the room, Lucca’s shoulder pushed into Dominic’s as he passed before he slowly disappeared into the Luciano home.

Wondering what the fuck his underboss was up to, Drago decided to let it play out, even though his decision was made. His eyes moved over the men in the room while they waited for Lucca’s return. There seemed to be a silent shift, his protective instincts going on high alert. He looked at Dominic first. It was his teeth he ground just a bit too tightly; he was almost undetectable. Then to the middle brother, Matthias, who was the most obvious. His leg bounced up and down harder and harder with every minute that passed while sitting in the chair he was slouched in. They were holding his identical twin, Angel, as collateral for the time being, so he supposed he had more to lose if this deal went bad. The last brother however, Cassius, was very young and in the early stages of high school. There was something about that kid Drago didn’t like. He reminded him of those kids in the horror movies who were possessed and stared at you a little bit too long. He was a scary little fucker with obscure eyes who definitely had no business being here. Fucking Lucianos.

A few more minutes passed till they could hear footsteps coming back toward them. Lucca started entering the room again, and it wasn’t till he took a step toward the right did he reveal what he found.

Drago stared at the young woman who was standing behind him. She was pale with long hair that looked almost blond but wasn’t; it was the lightest shade of pink you’d ever seen. Her eyes, however, were as black as the leather jacket and eye makeup she wore. It all made her look even paler than she probably was.

“Fuck.” Matthias jumped up from his seat.

Dominic took a step toward her, trying to grab her. “S-She’s only seventee—”

A hand came up, silencing him. Turning, Lucca stared the girl down, addressing her. “Is that so?”

Her black orbs danced between the three Luciano brothers.

“I’d advise you not to lie or…”—his light finger came out to touch her chin to make her finally look at him—“your brothers,” he emphasized, letting the room know he knew exactly who she was, “are going to find out the hard way to never fucking lie to me again.”

You could hear a pin drop in the room from the deafening silence. The only thing that rivaled the quietness was the tension.

She swallowed hard as the truth came out. “I’m eighteen.”

Vinny’s voice filled the silence with a hard consigliere tone. “I’d advise you and your men not to lie to the Caruso family, Dominic. I thought by us keeping Angel in our possession, that was understood.”

Understanding the threat he was just given, he held the bridge of his nose, clearly trying to think of how to get out of this fucking mess. “She’s my—our only sister, Lucca, and she is only safe here with us. Please, you have a sister. I beg of you to try to understand.”

Looking at her a moment longer, Lucca dropped his finger. “Get in line,” he hissed fatally at her.

Drago watched her bravely walk to stand beside the woman he had already chosen.

“Now, you may choose,” his underboss gave him the order.

He walked the line once more, this time paying close attention to each prospect. Making it all the way down to the woman he was seconds away from choosing. Truthfully, it was his dick that wanted to pick her. The way she eye fucked him now as she licked her lips made the decision even easier. However, there was a desperation in her eyes he had overlooked the first time. She was simply the decoy to keep him distracted; he saw that now. The Lucianos so clearly wanted him to pick her, knew she would be too irresistible not to choose. And I took the bait… Taking a final step, he stood in front of the pretty pink-haired girl… Almost.

Drago lifted his fingers, and unlike Lucca, he grabbed her chin, holding it tightly between his finger and thumb to force her eyes to his. “What’s your name, sweetheart?”

“Katarina.” Her voice came out huskier than he would have thought was possible for her age. “Katarina Luciano.”

He stared down at her. She sure as fuck wasn’t what he wanted. She was far too young for his taste and was definitely not his type, wearing too dark eye makeup and leather. He preferred a more natural look. She not only fit the Luciano esthetic of a rougher vibe, but she looked like a Luciano, not to mention she fucking was one. The worst kind. Three words were whispering through his mind over and over as he continued to stare at her. The devil’s daughter.

Drago had been about to choose with his dick, but now something much more satisfying was going to decide who it was he was going to marry, and it was going to taste so sweet. Dropping his hand from the tiny chin, he looked over at his underboss, the slight smile visible to him finally. You really are a sick fuck.

Unable to help glance at her once more, he let himself do so only for a split second before he looked back at Lucca. Quickly, he nodded, giving his final decision to his underboss before he turned to walk out.

“What does that mean??” Cassius asked, raising his voice louder when the solemn room didn’t answer. “What does that fuckin’ mean?!”

Matthias was the one to grab his little brother up to keep them from all getting killed.

Drago didn’t look back. The bullets the Lucianos had driven deep into his heart had killed it. He had made his decision the second he saw her devil eyes, and the ruin he was going to cause that fucking family might finally give him a full night’s rest since he’d been at the gates of Hell.

Payback wasn’t a bitch. It was a fucking monster.

About Sarah Brianne:

Hey! My name is Sarah Brianne and after living for twenty-two years the characters in my head told me enough was enough and I have finally put pen to paper (or is it finger to keyboard?) to tell their stories. Since I was a little girl I have watched every chick flick I could get my hands on, then when I became older I discovered a whole new world of romance novels. To me there is nothing better then a tale of true love and those are the stories that have inspired me to write. Like everything else in my life I have put my own spin on two lovers destined to be together.

Playing for Keeps by Jill Shalvis - Spotlight Tour

I am really excited to be a part of the spotlight blog tour for Jill Shalvis' 7th book in her Heartbreaker Bay series.

Playing for Keeps can be read as a standalone and is now available!

Book Description:

If you’re planning on falling in love…

When it comes to the confident, charismatic Caleb Parker, Sadie Lane feels the spark—the kind that comes from rubbing each other the wrong way. She’s yoga pants, he’s a suit. She’s a tattoo artist, he’s a straight-laced mogul. But after they accidentally co-rescue an abandoned dog from a storm, Sadie sees a vulnerable side to the seemingly invincible hottie.
you’d better be sure…

Caleb doesn’t do emotions. Growing up the underdog, he’s learned the hard way to build up an impenetrable wall. Perfect for business. Disastrous for relationships. He’s never worried about it before—not until he finally gets behind Sadie’s armor and begins to fall.

… someone is there to catch you.

Both guarded and vulnerable, Sadie and Caleb are complete opposites. Or are they? Shocked at their undeniable connection, can they ever admit to wanting more? That all depends on what they’re each willing to risk.

Excerpt:

“Sadie.”

She shook her head.

“Look at me. Please?”

It was the damn please that had her opening her eyes. He’d closed the gap so that if she so much as took a breath, they’d be touching.

So she did just that. She took a deep breath, and then their bodies were up against each other, his warm and hard. Everywhere. “What’s happening?” she whispered.

“I believe you’re deciding between kicking me in the nuts and kissing me.” One side of his mouth curved very slightly as he lifted their still joined hands above her head, against the wall.

“But that last part might just be in my dreams.”

“Yes,” she whispered.

“Yes, it’s just in my dreams?”

She meant to say yes again, she really did.

She even opened her mouth to say it, because this was insane, this incredible . . . craving she had for him. It made no sense. Less than no sense, and yet . . .

She went up on tiptoe and touched her mouth to his.
