Peyton looked back at the bar, but Luke was nowhere to be found. Pissed, she continued her trek to the bathrooms anyway and was just about to enter the door marked MNA when someone grabbed her hand and pulled her down a hallway and into some back room which housed a pay phone and a rack full of coats. Like the rest of the tavern, the lighting wasn’t great, but she was able to focus on the man who still gripped her hand and stared at her like he was either going to yell at her or take her against the wall in the most primal of ways. 

“What are you doing here?” she asked.

“Who is he?” Luke asked through gritted teeth.

It pissed her off that he completely ignored her question and asked her one instead, one that truly left her perplexed. “Who are you talking about?”

“The man who felt it was okay to touch you here.” He released her hand, but she instantly felt his fingertips at the small of her back. 

The heat of his touch made her anger fade, at least for the time being and she said, “He’s a friend of Walt’s.”

“Are you leaving with him?” His eyes darkened and he drew closer. His hand fell away from the small of her back, which thankfully broke the trance her body seemed to be under and her fury was reignited. 

Who the hell did he think he was? She didn’t owe him anything. Not even responses to questions that made her hot and furious at the same time.

“Did you follow me here?” she asked. Her voice shook a little, but it was better than submitting to his questions.

“Yes. Now, are you going home with him?”

“Do you have any idea how messed up that is? That you fucking followed me…again?”

His jaw clenched and he looked away. Peyton was prepared to continue, to lay into him and tell him that he was a stalker and could go to hell, but then he glanced back at her and she saw the shame in his eyes. “Yeah…it is fucked up. I’m…fucked up,” he said. 

She wasn’t even going to try to pretend that his words didn’t shock her. He knew what he was doing wasn’t normal. That he wasn’t normal. Luke roughly raked a hand through his hair as he paced the small coatroom. He reminded her of a caged animal, one that was anxious and willing to chew through the bars to get free. Shame, worry, pain, fear, confusion. He seemed consumed by each emotion all at once and all she could do was watch him suffer. What happened to him? Why did he look so…broken?

Before she could ask, Luke shook his head, told her he was sorry and left.

With a deep breath, she opened her eyes to see Jake standing in front of her with his arms crossed. She swallowed the bile rising in her throat, reminding herself that if mortification could actually kill, she’d have been a pile of ashes by now. 

“Tomorrow?” 

“Thanks for playing along. For the record, you die of Ebola tonight. Or dysentery. Whichever one works faster.” 

“Clem.” He tilted his head toward her, voice deepening to a low growl. “Why do your sisters think we’re dating?”

“I kind of told them I was going on a romantic getaway this week so they wouldn’t tag along on my vacation. Except instead of giving me space, they booked the cabin right next door and now I need you to use that hammer to build me a tiny little coffin while I curl up and die.” 

“Wait a second,” Julia said from the dining room doorway with Eli standing next to her, grinning. “You lied to your family about having a boyfriend and now they think Jake is coming with you on vacation tomorrow?” 

“Of course you and Eli overheard,” she mumbled. “I know it was a terrible idea but—”

“It’s a great idea!” 

Clem wiped her clammy palms against the ugly pair of basketball shorts she was still wearing and tried to fathom the reason for Julia’s wide grin. “Sure, if you think watching me dig myself into a deep hole with no escape is fun.”

“You don’t need an escape. You need Jake.”

“What?” Her and Jake’s gazes met like a head-on collision. 

Eli rubbed his palms together. “I don’t know what devious idea is churning in your brain, Sis, but I have a feeling it’s going to be good.”

“It’s simple. I need Jake to get out of my hair for the next week before he micromanages the wedding I’ve been planning to death, and you need a fake boyfriend. It’s perfect.”

It would be perfect, the devil on Clem’s shoulder whispered. Her family was so desperate to see her in a relationship, they’d probably actually give her some space this week. Maybe even enough that she could focus on the recording she needed to turn over to the publisher two weeks from now. 

But it was a ridiculous idea. There was no way Jake would go for it. He had a business. A life. A fiancée. Crap. “You can’t be serious?”

“Sorry, man,” Eli said, raising his palms. “My vote’s with Julia. We outnumber you.”

Jake’s jaw clenched so hard, Clem could see the pulse point ticking in his neck. Her heart thumped against her chest as she waited for him to laugh at her. Or shake his head in disgust. Because there was no way he would actually go through with this. 

She braced herself for rejection as he turned toward her, expression grim. “I’m game if you are.”

Holy shit.

This isn’t a date or anything, just to let you know. I think she’s single, but since my girlfriend up in Seattle would skin me if I even dared to look at Blake that way, I’m just fine as I am. Anyway, I thought you should know that she’s just trying to piss you off. Bro code and all that.” Graham clenched his teeth. “Bro code.” He ordered his beer, Owen’s soda, and paid for Derek and Blake’s drinks since Derek had been so helpful. “What are you going to do about Blake?” Derek asked as they made their way back to the entrance and showed their tickets. “Don’t know yet.” And that was the problem. He never knew about anything where it came to this woman. She could intrigue him, turn him on, and piss him off all in the span of ten minutes. That had to be a record. He handed Owen his drink and sat back down, studying Blake as he did so. “What?” she asked, brows raised. “Nothing,” he said softly. “Not yet anyway.” She blinked and opened her mouth to say something, then froze as people started to chant, “Kiss! He didn’t open his mouth, wouldn’t let his tongue touch hers, but the moment of lips against lips left him breathless. He pulled back, his eyes wide, Blake’s even wider. “What the hell was that?” Blake gasped, her cheeks slashed with red. “I…” He cleared his throat. “Just watch the game. And you can cheer for your precious Avs. Don’t hurt yourself going for Toronto.” He turned away from her and gulped half his beer down in one go. He could feel Blake’s eyes on him before she turned away, and see her hands shaking out of the corner of his eye. “Dude,” Owen whispered. “This is going to be fun.” “Fuck you,” Graham growled and drank the last of his beer. He didn’t know what had come over him, but that had to be the last of it. There was no way he was going to go there. If he were this unraveled and tense at the same time with just one kiss, with just one look, he wouldn’t make it if he had her in his arms. In his bed. Blake wasn’t for him, and damn it, he didn’t want her to be. The Kiss Cam could go straight to hell.
