Book Description:

The girl code “Chicks before d*cks” should include that no friend can steal another friend’s boyfriend—or marry them. When Ashton Carter's "good idea at the time" revenge plan lands her in hot water, she never expected to see her ex again—especially in court. A few thousand dollars in damages later, she snags a job as a phone sex operator and seeks out a roommate to help fund her "stay out of jail" expenses. Having a roommate should’ve been helpful—except when they turn out to be the hot, yet douchebag mechanic working on her car. When Ashton learns that her new roommate has been the sexy phone sex caller, lines begin to blur between real life and fantasy. It was supposed to be a no-strings-attached situation; neither of them were ready for love again. When a surprise visit from an ex shakes their forming foundation with an ultimatum, Ashton is forced to face the truth of her feelings and make a choice. With her budding relationship and livelihood at stake, Ashton has to untangle the lines of reality and fantasy in a last ditch effort to protect her heart.

My Review:

So straight up honest here I will admit going into this one with a little trepidation only because I had to read the description about a thousand times before it clicked with me who was doing what and what was basically going on.  It is probably just me and my mind being on a million different things at once all the time, but I was completely befuddled by the synopsis.  My point in telling you this is because I want you to not give credence to it if you are struggling to understand it as well.  The book itself is so much better than the blurb, don't let it turn you away from a truly enjoyable read.

This was my first read from Victoria Bright and I really enjoyed what she gave us here.  There are lots of laughter, some tears of understanding, and so many swoon worthy, steamy moments...so many.  I loved the relationships between the characters from our main couple to the relationships with family and friends.  I will say I was put off a bit at first by Ashton, she came across as quite the jerk to me when I think that O'Shea was supposed to be giving me that vibe.  I just kept saying to myself to remember how hurt she had been and that she was just throwing up walls but there was a time or two that I would have happily given her a hard shake and told her to straighten her shite out, lol.

I loved the concept of Ashton being a 'Phone a Friend', i.e. Sex Call Worker, and O'Shea being one of her 'clients'.  I am so intrigued by this concept that if my husband looks at my Google searches he might find himself a little concerned, lol.  It's interesting as this is something I know is in existence, has been for many, MANY, years but I have honestly just never thought much about how it worked and well Victoria has my interest piqued, ha.

The chemistry between O'Shea and Ashton is off the charts hot and watching their coming to terms with the fact that together they are a perfect match was truly lovely to see.  I loved the way that while this book is not a book about the color of any one's skin, Victoria does take the time to introduce us to  a small touch of what I am sure many interracial couples face from time to time.  I loved the way she handled the moment that ugliness occurred though I do wish they culprit had more of a comeuppance.  Now I will admit to being a 'petty' when it comes to things like this but my true one regret with this book is that a certain couple, a articular character didn't get his what for when he so very much deserved it.  I felt like with all the relationships but that one we get some form of closure.  Instead this one couple does/says terrible things, the man in that relationship is a horrible person and while he gets a small moment of pay back we never get to see the full circle come around for hem/them and I waited all book for it honestly.

That said I think you will find yourself falling for this couple and rooting for them from moment one. There are a lot of laughs to be had between these characters but a lot more love and you will dive in and find that you have finished your read before you even come back up for air.  It's not a short book or necessarily a quick read but it is totally engaging and engrossing.  I kind of had hopes that maybe this would turn into a series, with a certain best friend, a best friends brother, and then maybe one for a cocky mechanic who needs a woman or man to take him in firmly in hand *snicker*.  Not saying there couldn't be but this book definitely ends on an HEA with what is seemingly no thought to moving forward into other stories.  Here's to hoping though because I am really looking forward to more from this author and I think if you give her work a try you will be too!

Exclusive Excerpt:

His sweatpants from earlier were replaced by a pair of dark blue, deliciously fitting blue jeans and a snug grey, deep V-neck shirt. Jesus. The man was absolutely gorgeous. His shirt fit as if it were body paint, molding the muscles in his chest and shoulders. His pants encased his strong thighs, which slightly flexed as he turned in different angles to show me his outfit. “Don’t drown yourself in drool, girl. I’m not too familiar with CPR,” he joked, his hazel eyes twinkling in amusement. I blinked and focused my gaze on his smug expression. Even though I did think he looked damn good, he’d never know about it, the cocky bastard. “Don’t flatter yourself,” I scoffed, plucking a few more grapes from the bag. He chuckled. “Hey, I can read body language, baby. You got that ‘fuck me’ stare going on.” “First, I’m not your baby. Second, as fucking if,” I said, bringing my eyes to the bag of grapes. I wouldn’t necessarily say I wanted him to fuck me, but…the thought wasn’t too far off. “Seriously though, what do you think? Too casual for a bar? Not casual enough? Too tight looking?” I snorted. “Oh, it’s tight enough.” “So too tight?” “Eh, it’s fine.” “Fine?” He groaned. “Fine isn’t good enough. Now I need to go change.” He turned and headed toward his room. “God, and I thought I was a diva,” I teased. He turned and looked at me, a slight frown settling on his full lips. “What’s wrong with wanting to look good, Satan?” “Nothing. I just didn’t take you to be the particular type,” I replied with a smirk. “Well, I like to look good, especially when going to places for the first time.” “Fair enough,” I replied. “Then it looks good, Mr. Diva.” He grinned. “Like sexy good or ‘it’s fine’ good?” he asked, ignoring the nickname I gave him. I rolled my eyes. “Don’t be so obvious in fishing for compliments.” “Just a simple question.” “Fine. Sexy good. Now go away.” His grin turned into a full smile. “So you think I’m sexy then?” I scowled. Of course he’d try to twist the meaning of my words. “Your outfit, yes. You? Still questionable.” Though it wasn’t questionable. We both knew he looked good, but I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction. He tsked and shook his head. “You’re ice cold, A.” “Glad we established that early,” I said and turned back to my grapes. He smirked. “Anyway, not sure when I’ll be back, so do you have a house key or something I can use? I don’t want to wake you,” he said. “Oh shit. I knew I forgot something,” I muttered mostly to myself. “You can borrow mine and I’ll get you one made tomorrow.” “Sounds legit, Satan.” “It’s Ashton.” “You got it, Satan.”
