From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Rachel Van Dyken comes a new story in her Eagle Elite series…

Every family has rules, the mafia just has more…. Do not speak to the bosses unless spoken to. Do not make eye contact unless you want to die. And above all else, do not fall in love. Renee Cassani’s future is set. Her betrothal is set. Her life, after nannying for the five families for the summer, is set Somebody should have told Vic Colezan that. He’s a man who doesn’t take no for an answer. And he only wants one thing. Her. Somebody should have told Renee that her bodyguard needed as much discipline as the kids she was nannying. Good thing Vic has a firm hand.

My Review:

What can I say, except every book I pick up from Eagle Elite the more in love with the series I fall.  I'll always be up front and tell you guys that when this series first began I wasn't the biggest fan.  It wasn't that it was bad, I just didn't connect all that much, but wow over time Rachel Van Dyken has taken this crew from boys playing at being men, to men and women simply being badasses!  Envy is just another fantastic addition to what has become one of my favorite series out there.

You will fall immediately in love with these two characters.  I adored how Renee was/is about of the antithesis to everything these families are. She's grown up not naive about the world around her but sheltered from it.  She doesn't want the life she sees around her, the life that the mothers and fathers of the children she nannies have.  She wants quiet and peace.  She wants to go to college and get a job, settle down to a 'normal' suburban life.  Of course what we want isn't always what we need or what we get.  Vic, I honestly don't know exactly what to say about Vic, except I LURVE HIM!  He's a big ol' teddy bear wrapped up in a tough and grumble veneer. No doubt he is one of the baddest (as in badass) of the bunch, he's THE ENFORCER for the families....just think on that, one enforcer, 4 families!  He has their world on his shoulders and he takes that role with an unparalleled seriousness. The families trust him, they have put their lives in his hands...but maybe they've asked a bit too much.

These two characters together are wonderful to watch (not to be puny, which you will only get once you read the book) and root for.  There is some complication in trying to keep up with who's doing what and who is in charge of what, but this world is complex and Rachel Van Dyken does an amazing job of weaving these stories and keeping us on our toes.  I love the way she always gives us a twist in each story.  Just when you think you know, she blows your mind and takes you down a completely unknown direction.

I will say that like all 1,001 Dark Nights novellas this one can be read as a standalone, but I almost feel like you really need the entire backstory to understand the dynamics of this family...you will at least most assuredly be adding the entire series to your shelves after reading this book.  As with most novellas I don't want to go into much detail, but be assured that if you are a Eagle Elite fan you want this book and if you have never read an Eagle Elite book, don't hesitate to pick this one up...all I can say to you then is Blood In, No Out.  Welcome to the Family!

~ HAPPY READING ~

Excerpt:

I tasted his fear.

It mingled with his lust.

His desire.

I wanted him.

So I took him.

Because waiting for him to snap was like watching someone slowly burn from within until they lash out at everything around them. He felt the attraction. We were heat, we were untamed, we were greedy.

He reached for the front of my shirt and ripped it with his right hand. I gasped as he exposed my bra and then ripped that too, like I could go out and find another one just like it.

It would be easier if he was clumsy…

If he didn’t know exactly what he was doing when his tongue slid past my lips and teased every inch of my mouth.

He knew.

He knew my body better than I did.

I arched into him wantonly.

He responded by lifting me with one arm and bracing me against the tree, running his wicked mouth down my neck and licking one nipple, only to go to the other like he’d been waiting to do it all day.

Each moan was swallowed by more deep kissing.

“You’re bad for me,” he whispered against my neck. “I want you anyways.”

“You’re bad for me,” I admitted. “I’ll take you any way I can get.”

He growled against my mouth, and the vibration of it sent shivers down my spine. Abruptly he pulled away.

I wanted to protest, to tell him not to run.

I didn’t have to.

He threw me over his shoulder like I weighed nothing and carried me into the house, slamming the door behind him, locking it to keep bad guys out—or maybe to keep the baddest of them all…

In.

He tossed me onto the nearest couch and attacked. His mouth came down hard, next his body, until all I knew was him.

Vic’s scent.

His taste.

The weight of him pressed against me.

I opened my mouth to him as he deepened the kiss. His rough hands cupped my breasts, weighing them, squeezing, as he sucked my tongue with his lips, bit down with his teeth.

Heart racing, I couldn’t even form a logical thought beyond how good he tasted and how hot his skin was.

“This happens once.” He pulled away abruptly. “Promise me.”

I gulped.

“Renee.” It was his tone, the sound of my name falling from his lips like he was tortured by my name—by me. I knew that kind of torture, I knew what it was like to kiss my enemy and want him in my bed.

To hate myself for wanting the murderer.

EXCERPT:

I tried not to judge. It was hard. They were mafia bosses—I got it. Or at least I thought I understood it since I had grown up around it. But my upbringing wasn’t as severe. My dad was a Nicolasi and always kept things quiet around us. It wasn’t until I was twelve that I realized it wasn’t normal for us to make as much money as we did through two jewelry stores and five laundromats. I wrongly assumed that every business owner with a lot of cash drove a bulletproof Mercedes to protect their family. The older I got, the more horrified I became of the life my father lived, the life he forced us to live, and the complete unrest I felt every time I closed my eyes and prayed for him to come home. He was a made man. One of the best in the family, which meant Phoenix trusted him, which in turn meant he trusted me to watch his little boy. And every time Phoenix looked at his phone I wondered if it was my dad texting, if he was alive, if he was okay. He’d been gone for a month. We hadn’t heard from him except for a few “hey, I’m alive” texts. I hated this life. And I wanted out. “Renee.” Nixon leaned down and touched my shoulder. “Are you okay?” I stilled. Remembered not to look directly into his eyes and forced a smile. “I’m just tired, you know how it is.” “Kids do that to a person,” Phoenix piped in, finally sheathing the knives he’d apparently pulled out in the last few seconds that I’d been thinking about my dad. “We need to leave in five.” Nixon stood. I looked away. I had to. It made me sick to my stomach the blood these men had on their hands and the way they so casually talked about killing as if they were discussing the latest episode of This Is Us. I forced a smile at Serena and Junior just as the front door swung open, nearly coming off its hinges. There he stood. My nightmare. Vic Corazon Abandonato. In all his gory glory. Tight black pants. Tight black shirt. Enough guns strapped to him to win an all-out war. And no smile. The man never smiled. It wasn’t in his makeup to smile. The one time he smiled was at Chase, and I think it was just a happy accident because Chase looked as shocked as the rest of the group did. I glanced away, again making sure I wasn’t drawing attention to myself, and fed the kids. Vic was a silent killer. I imagined that people didn’t even know they were dying until they saw the blood running like a river from their chests. I shivered. That’s what assassins for the mafia did. They weren’t made men, they weren’t in line for boss. They did the dirty work-and they took the fall for it. They had one job. Protect the family at all costs.

Blaire has never quite gotten over Jessie Beckett, the ex–NFL star whose kisses were hot enough to ignite the entire Eastern Seaboard. When he chose work over her, Blaire was left brokenhearted. Why else would she have married a skeezy two-timer, just to divorce him less than a year later?

Now Blaire is getting even by becoming one half of Dirty Exes, a PI firm fully committed to humiliating cheating jerks. If only the new jerk she’s been hired to uncover wasn’t Jessie Beckett himself.

“What’s with you and nakedness?”

“It’s how we’re born.” I smirked. “Easy.”

“I was also born with crooked teeth and no hair, so I should revert back to that?”

“Actually,” I licked my lips, “You were born without teeth, unless God made you extra special…” I pushed away from the counter. “Did he?”

She plastered her ass against the door and looked up at me. “Did he what?”

“Make you extra special?”

“Why are we in the bathroom?”

“It think it was a power move on your part, lock me in here, tell me how things are going to be, maybe add in a spanking and teach me my lesson—“

“—why do I even talk to you?” Blaire wondered out loud.

“Because I’m not boring. Like some football players…”

“You never played football.”

“Guilty. I was more of a rugby sort of guy, what prick wears padding?”

She eyed me skeptically, “No offense but don’t Rugby players have a bit more…” She gulped and looked down past my waist, “Okay this is coming out wrong but… thicker—“

The more she talked the redder she got like she couldn’t bring her eyes up any higher without doing permanent damage to her retinas.

I grinned so hard my face hurt. “Thicker?”

“Um,” She pressed a hand to her forehead. “Legs, damn it, legs!”

“Totally thought you were going somewhere else with that, spy girl.”

She made a face and crossed her arms. “Stop calling me that, it makes me feel young, stupid, and inexperienced.”

“Like a virgin?” I said helpfully. “Touched for the very first time?” She muttered out a dear God what did I do in a past life to deserve him.

I took it as a compliment and pressed my hands against the door on either side of her head. “I think you’re asking yourself the wrong question.”

She frowned, “I didn’t say anything.”

“No, but you’re thinking it.” I whispered. “You’re wondering what the hell you’re doing in here instead of out there.”

She swallowed and looked away.

I tilted her face back towards mine, my finger and thumb cradling her chin. “The past always looks better through I got fucked over glasses.” I got a bit closer, so close I could taste the mint from her gum. “You think you still want him. You’re wrong.”

She inhaled sharply. “You don’t know me.”

“I know you blush from here,” I tapped her chin then ran my hand down the slim column of her neck until it pressed against her chest. “To here, when you get embarrassed,” I leaned in and whispered in her ear. “Or turned on.”

She blushed immediately.

I kissed her neck and said. “Told you so.”

She shoved me away so fast I almost got whiplash. “This,” She took another deep breath. “This is business.”

“This?” I pointed between her and me. “Is more than business, but whatever helps you sleep at night spy girl… just be sure to let me know when you want it to get more personal because I’d love to see every inch of blush infused skin, and I’d love to eat my way—“

“—No.” Shed jammed her finger at me. “When I called you, you literally had to kick a woman out of bed.”

“Two, actually.” I shrugged, “Not that it matters.”

“See!”

“So? I like women.”

“I’m not them.”

“No,” I said seriously. “You’re not. If you were, this would already be finished.”

“There is no… this, or us, beyond you helping me get info on Jessie and Vanessa.”

“Sure.” I nodded. “Fine.”

“Why don’t I believe you?”

“Because I just lied.” I admitted with a grin, “But at least you know where I stand.”

“Oh yeah? Where’s that?”

“In front of you.” I smirked. “Obviously.” I walked towards her again and reached for the door knob, “Look I’m just a guy standing in front of a girl asking her to—“

“—finish that sentence and I’m going to show you my kung fu skills.”

The Consequence of Rejection by Rachel Van Dyken - Release Day Blitz

Title: The Consequence of Rejection
A Standalone Consequence Novel
Author: Rachel Van Dyken
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Release Date: March 26, 2018

Book Description:

You know the universe is trying to tell you something when you get struck by lightning, but only after getting hit on by the elderly, almost getting run over by a semi, and running into the one who got away.
Why do they say it like that anyway?
Like I accidentally lost her when she was the one that got in the car with my best friend and left me.
The day after I proposed.
We were eighteen.
I wanted forever.
She didn't.
It's been ten years.
I tried to move on, tried to get married, had that same wedding crashed by my now best friend who says the only way for me to stop pissing off the universe, is to gain closure with the one woman I can't forget.
So I do it.
I embark on a journey down memory lane that not only lands me in prison but on the receiving end of a fist fight in front of the entire town, this naturally happens after drunken pool sex, climbing the same girl's window, and getting threatened at gunpoint by her father.
To say the universe is trying to tell me something anything, is a giant understatement.
I just hope I survive the message.
And then, I hope I survive her—again.

Excerpt:

Full breasts spilled over into a small black bikini that left nothing to the imagination, it barely covered nipple for that matter, and the bottoms? Well she had to keep adjusting them lets just say high school bathing suits ten years later look small.
In the best way possible.
Head held high she walked right by me to Max, grabbed a shot, took it, then sucked the lime he held out in front of her.
I growled.
Max winked at me. “Something wrong, man?”
I reached for the non existent gun at my side, which just made him grin harder as he kept handing out alcohol to parents of toddlers.
Because thats the type of party it was.
Almost everyone started talking about their kids, retirement, stock portfolios, vacation time, and babies.
It was almost too depressing for words.
I had all those things but what I’d always wanted. A family. Babies.
Maddy.
She shared a sideway’s glance with me.
I reached for her, but she pulled away and ran full speed towards the pool and did a giant canon ball.
People cheered.
While I watched as wet cold water ran down her curvy body, my gaze was so tranfixed on her erect nipples I’m surprised nobody pulled me aside about my current situation of arousal.
Cold water. Fast.
I chased after her, jumped in.
And felt the warm buzz of alcohol fill my veins just as I popped up and saw Max follow, balls first, in my face.
I ducked just in time so I didn’t get a fist full of balls.
The guy only laughed once we both popped up.
I swam towards Maddy, and tugged her against me. “Stop running.”
“I’m not.” Her breath came out raspy. “I’m just…reliving old times, isn’t that what you wanted? So we could have closure?”
Why did it feel like she was turning the tables on me.
“Yeah,” I said slowly, “But—“
Her kiss was swift.
Hard.
Fast, and oh so very punishing as I gaped into her mouth and pinned her against he side of the pool.
Music filled the air out of nowhere from somewhere outside, it pounded into my ears the way I wanted to pound into her.
I grinned against her mouth as she wrapped her legs around my waist.
And then Reid cast a shadow over us and started pouring vodka over our heads.
Maddy tilted her head back and opened her mouth while I leaned in and licked it off her chin.
People cheered.
“Guys!” Someone yelled. “Keep it down, someones going to call the cops!”
“Cops?” Max laughed loudly. “I am the law, bitches!” The music blared. “Plus, we already got our cop here.” He pointed while I took another shot.
People cheered.
And then Maddy squeezed her thighs.
Yeah the cops were coming alright.
