My Review:

As usual, I fell in love with a Lords of the Underworld story.  It's odd because it has only been a year since Gena put out a LotU novel but as I was reading this one I just felt like it had been forever and I was so happy to be back with the 'gang.  It felt refreshing.

Fox is a force of nature, I loved her when she was protecting Galen, I love her, even more, when she is trying to protect herself.  Her snark, her blood-lust, her chaotic mind, she is just plain fun to 'watch.  The only thing that I could ask for is for her to not be so 'childish' in her speech if that makes sense.  It's not uncommon in this series, and I guess that is probably what put me off a little, I've heard it too much.  Snark doesn't mean idiotic, which I am not saying Fox is, she just sounds that way at times and it kind of grates.  It's a small thing really, it would ever put me off from reading or enjoying an LoTu story, I always will want more, it is just kind of cringy.

Bjorn is amazing, as we expected from seeing him in the previous 'Angel' stories, his bromance with Thane and Xerxes is one of my all-time favorites, I could have totally used an entire book of just that relationship.  I love 1,001 Dark Night novellas because they are the perfect gate-way book for new readers, but I almost wish Bjorn had been given a full-length novel so I could have had more of the boys!  His relationship with Fox was well done, nothing felt forced even though it was a quick romance, their distrust (ha) of one another and eventual relationship is exactly what I needed out of this story!

There is a great lead up to William's story, I am so curious as to how Gena is going to handle this 'hot-button' book, and if the glimpse we got of Sunny says anything, we are in for quite an adventure.  I am also excited to see more of the Sent Ones stories, especially, of course, Xerxes, but I hope their stories don't end with him.

All in all, this is a great addition to the LotU storyline, if you are an avid long-time reader this will be just the little taste you need to hold you over until Darkest King, if you are new to this world, welcome to the ride, it's an exciting one and while this is a good place to start get ready because you are definitely want to go back 14 books and start at the beginning, you won't regret it!

~ HAPPY READING ~

Excerpt:

He picked up the paper, turned it over and read it again.
It stated, plainly, he was fucked.
More alarmingly, it stated, chillingly, Mac was in danger.
This was a problem more than it was already a colossal motherfucking problem.
Any other one of his girls, he’d pick up the phone to Lee Nightingale, the man behind Nightingale Investigations, the commander of the baddest badass motherfuckers in Denver. He’d hand over this letter and he’d get this problem solved.
But Mac was Charlotte McAlister, Jet McAlister Chavez’s little sister. Jet was married to Eddie Chavez. Eddie was Lee’s best friend. And Jet worked for Indy, Lee’s wife, the Queen of the Rock Chicks, and thus Jet Chavez was a bona fide Rock Chick.
Mac might not be a card-carrying member of the Rock Chicks, mostly because she had a job where she worked nights, the time those crazy bitches instigated the most fucked-up of their varying antics. Though they weren’t averse to mornings and afternoons. It was just that the stun-gunnings, kidnappings and the like mostly took place at night, and Mac was busy then.
She was still a Rock Chick, or at least she was by association.
Considering the Rock Chick link and the blood ties to Jet, if Lee knew Mac was in danger, he’d tear the town apart to put a stop to it.
And Eddie…
Now Eddie, Smithie didn’t even want to think about it. The man was a cop. The shit Lee and his boys did with flair and a flagrant disregard to just about anything, Eddie could not do.
But Eddie wouldn’t blink at doing whatever he had to do to make his sister-in-law safe.
And the man had mouths to feed.
So yeah.
This was a problem even more than it already was a colossal motherfucking problem because Smithie couldn’t call Lee.
Which meant Smithie had to find a different set of badasses to deal with it.
His first call would normally be the Chaos Motorcycle Club. Mac wasn’t one of theirs, neither was Smithie, but they had ties to Lee, they could keep a secret, and they didn’t dick around when it came to women and their safety.
But they’d just come out of a war, and like any war, that had been some serious fucked-up shit.
They needed a breather.
Lee, and Chaos, also had ties to…
“Well, hell,” Smithie muttered, the words on the letter blurring, the sick feeling in the back of his throat easing.
He dropped the letter and picked up his cell.
If you couldn’t call a badass…
Then it was far from second best to call a commando.

 About KRISTEN ASHLEY:

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorize and she hadn’t taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen’s Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning. Nothing’s changed. Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she’s blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched). Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up. And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.

Book Description:

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Larissa Ione comes a new story in her Demonica Underworld series…

It’s been seven months since Cipher, an Unfallen angel who straddled a razor thin line between good and evil, woke up in hell with a new set of wings, a wicked pair of fangs, and a handler who’s as beautiful as she is dangerous. As a laid-back cyber-specialist who once assisted guardian angels, he’d been in a prime position to earn back his halo. But now, as a True Fallen forced to use his talents for malevolence, he must fight not only his captors and his sexy handler, but the growing corruption inside him…before the friends searching for him become his enemies and he becomes his own worst nightmare.

Lyre is a fallen angel with a heart full of hate. When she’s assigned to ensure that Cipher carries out their boss’s orders, she sees an opportunity to take revenge on those who wronged her. All she has to do is appeal to Cipher’s burgeoning dark side. But the devastatingly handsome fellow True Fallen has other ideas — sexy ideas that threaten to derail all Lyre’s plans and put them in the path of an approaching hell storm.

Danger and desire explode, even as Cipher and Lyre unravel a sinister plot that will fracture the underworld and send shockwaves into Heaven itself…

My Review:

Getting back to the Demonica World is always a highlight of the year for me.  This is truly one of those series that I don't mind being 19 books deep into and still wanting more of, I just can't get enough.

Cipher is a character that we met in a past book, he is the best friend of Hawkyn.  He was stolen away from his life, family, and friends and dragged into Sheoul to become a True Fallen Angel....but does a Fallen Angel have to become evil, can a Fallen Angel still love?

I loved the look into the process of becoming a True Fallen, the fight to stay strong and keep a sense of self instead of just becoming one of the many evils.  We get to see that fight form both Cipher and Lyre, whose story was a bit heartbreaking and I can totally understand why she wanted revenge, I wanted  (I'd fall so fast you guys, soooo fast, lol) it for her!  I throughly enjoyed the back and forth between them, especially because while there was a bit of a tug of war there was never any malice between the two, there was always that underlying steaminess just waiting to be explored.  Something else I really liked (and you'll see some of this in the excerpt below) is that side story between Azagoth (always a favorite of mine) and Lilliana.

As with most 1,001 Dark Nights there isn't a ton that I can talk about beaus I don not want to spoil anything for you, but I can tell you that if you are a fan of the Demonica series you absolutely want to read this, if you haven't read Demonica before you can totally start here but you will be missing out on a few key points, particularly when it comes to Agazoth and Lilliana, that said this book will totally wet your appetite and have you diving into a total binge!

~ HAPPY READING ~

EXCERPT:

Lilliana inhaled a shaky breath as she stood on the portal pad inside Sheoul-gra, the symbols engraved into the stone glowing hotly. A breeze swirled around her, rattling the leaves on the perpetually blooming citrus trees and bringing their tangy and sweet scents to her nose. Grassy lawns stretched for acres, broken by babbling streams and worn paths — and the occasional ancient Greek column or demonic statue that rose into the featureless gray sky.

Several yards away, a fountain that once ran with blood splashed crystal water onto pavers leading to outbuildings that housed dozens of Unfallen angels and Memitim. And beyond the fountain, Azagoth’s palace towered over all, its pale walls gleaming.

Relief sifted through her, temporarily replacing her nervousness. The realm was attuned to Azagoth’s moods, and she wasn’t sure what she’d have done if she’d come back to find the kind of decay and evil that had once held court here.

The Grim Reaper’s realm could be beautiful but disconcerting; look, but not too closely, touch, but don’t feel.

Her gut turned over, and inside her rounded belly, the baby stirred as if sensing the return of her anxiety.

Except that anxiety was too mellow a word for what she was experiencing. Really, she was flat-out terrified, mere moments away from seeing her husband for the first time in months. For the first time since she’d left him.

And he didn’t have a clue that she was pregnant.

She almost regretted telling Reaver that she didn’t need him to accompany her down here when he’d flashed her from Ares’s Greek island to the outer portal. She should have at least allowed Maleficent, a hellhound that had shadowed her everywhere on the island, to come with her. The hound had refused to leave her side until Cara distracted the beast long enough for Lilliana to get away. She was going to miss the moose-sized canine, but Cara assured her that Mal would find her if the hellhound had bonded with her.

Lilliana was going to have a hard enough time trying to explain bringing home a baby, let alone a pet that ate people.

Resting her palm on her baby bump, she stepped off the landing pad and started toward the palace, her heart pounding wildly. Azagoth would have sensed her presence by now.

Before that thought even faded, the skin on the back of her neck tingled, and she stopped in her tracks.

He was here.

He was behind her.

She should turn around and face him. But damn, she wasn’t ready for this.

Closing her eyes, she let out a long, ragged breath, and when she spoke, she could only manage a whisper. “Azagoth.”

Exclusive Excerpt:

Alexandra slides the balcony door open. The cool night air drifts in and blows the curtains in a ripple. She steps out, grabs the rails, and turns her head skyward. Her green dress and the hair down her back float like the curtains. I follow Alexandra’s footprints in my rug out into the night…and her. I slide my hands over her shoulders and slowly down her arms. “Would you tell me what you’re thinking? Are you regretting coming up here?” Her head lowers. “No. Not even a little.” I know she has more to say, so I let the noise of the city fill the silence between us until she continues. “I had a dream once I never told you about. I had a conversation with Lainey. It was in a place just like this.” That admission hits my heart in an unexpected way. “You did?” “Julian, when we were in Savannah, it was not the time to talk about her or ask questions unless you did. I know some of the loss you feel. I watched my dad. I felt things myself. The things that were most important to me then, and still are now, are that you are ready and that you know I would never, and will never, try to take her place. I want you to feel like you can share her with me. Knowing her will only allow me to know you better. “I’ve thought that for a long time. So, much like I talked to my mother at the Falls, I talked to her in my alone time in Savannah. Being here, now, closes that chapter for me. I knew I would know if it wasn’t right the minute I stepped in here. My anxiety is gone.” She turns her head so her chin touches her right shoulder. “I can breathe.” God she’s stunning. Inside and out.

My Review:

One of my true bookish joys is getting to go back to worlds that have stolen my heart but then quietly slipped away as the world's characters have found their HEA's, so you can well imagine my joy over Ensnared!  I have beeb following along with the Eternal Guardians for so long now that when the worlds story arc started to see it's end I felt bereft, getting this glimpse of them all again just brings home how much I love these characters and this world.  I hope that Elisabeth will be able to find more of these gems to share with us and perhaps one day we'll get the stories of the children's children...I mean it's not too much to expect/want her to keep this going for year and years is it?  ;-)

Ensnared is the story of Ryder, a messenger for Zeus (he's such a jerk that Zeus) and Zakara the beloved daughter of Callia and Zander, whose story you can read in Entwined, book 2 of the Eternal Guardians series. As always I love that you can almost always dive into a 1,001 Dark Night Novella having never read the series before and be perfectly content.  Ensnared is no exception which is wonderful because if it were any other book in the series I would tell the reader that they want to start at book one.  The Eternal Guardians world builds upon itself in each book so starting at book one is important typically, but you will be fine here, though it will make you want to go back and read from the start and meet the moms and dads that started this journey with the PitA Zeus.

I was completely enamored with Ryder and Zakara, I loved Ryder's over all storyline and his sweet Alpha Male personality.  Zakara is just refreshing in her individuality, I love that while she becomes a kick butt heroine she always retains her gentle spirit.  Their love story is sweet and totally steamy and the way that Elisabeth always makes things work out in the end will have you smiling and wanting more...which we should be getting, squee!

This is a great read for any fan of the series or anyone just curious to see what the Argonauts are all about!  Grab this one up and sit back and enjoy!

~ HAPPY READING ~

Excerpt:

Happily ever after wasn’t in his future. Reality and dreams—as he’d learned long ago—did not intermix. It was too dangerous. And he’d spent months successfully avoiding her, only to have Zeus send him straight to her now.

Only now that he was here, some part of him was thankful he no longer had to avoid her. He knew he should go on fighting the attraction but he didn’t want to. She was everything he’d been denying himself. Everything he craved. That connection he’d been missing for so damn long. For tonight, at least, he wanted to indulge in the one temptation he knew he could never truly have.

“I wondered when you’d return.”

She turned at the sound of his voice and lifted surprised eyes to his. Violet eyes. Mesmerizing eyes. Eyes that softened and warmed the instant they locked on his. “I was tied up all day with family stuff. This was the soonest I could get here.”

Damn, he didn’t remember those eyes being quite that brilliant.

“Thankfully, you’re here now.” He reached for her hand, silky soft skin sliding over his much rougher palm, and drew her toward him. Her lithe body brushed up against his without even the slightest hesitation.

“Where is here?” she asked, tipping her face up toward his, teasing him with her plump, pink lips beneath the softly swaying palms in the warm breeze.

“Right where we left off.”

He lowered his lips to hers with a kiss that sizzled along every one of his nerve endings and taunted his rock-solid self-control. But before he could deepen the kiss and tease her with the promise of a little pleasure, he registered that the water beneath his feet had turned cold, and the warm breeze that had once been ruffling his hair now left a shiver down his spine.

He drew back, lifted his head, and glanced around the beach, only to gasp at what he saw. No more palm trees, no more powder white sand, no gently lapping waves. The water was now still and black, the shore a mixture of rough sand and small round stones, and there was no more tropical foliage rising from the beach. Instead, steep, rigid mountains stood tall against a starry sky. Mountains covered in pine and fir and spruce and cottonwood.

“What in all the gods...” Still holding her hands, he turned to the left and looked back behind him, no longer seeing his bare footprints in the soft sand as they’d been moments before. Catching nothing but the dark rocky shoreline as it curved around what looked to be a small bay in a rather large lake.

“Something wrong?”

Her sweet voice drew him back around, and he looked down with wide eyes, shocked she didn’t seem the slightest bit concerned. “I...”

Words faltered on his lips. Had he altered the dream right there mid-kiss?

ABOUT ELISABETH NAUGHTON:

Elisabeth Naughton is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author. From Elisabeth: “I was never one of those people who knew they wanted to be an author at the age of six. I didn’t have imaginary friends. I didn’t write stories in my journal or entertain my relatives by firelight after Thanksgiving dinner. For the most part, I was just a normal, everyday kid. I liked to read, but I wasn’t exceptional at it. And when my teachers complimented me on my writing abilities, I brushed them off. I did, however, always have a penchant for the unique and absurd. And as my mother told me all throughout my childhood, I should have been an actress—I was a drama queen before my time. “Years ago, my husband bought me Scarlett: The Sequel to Gone With The Wind. If you ever saw the book, you know it’s a long one. I sat and read that thing from cover to cover, and dreamed of one day being a writer. But I didn’t actually try my hand at writing until years later when I quit my teaching job to stay home with my kids. And my husband? After that week of reading where I neglected him and everything else until I finished Scarlett, he vowed never to buy me another book again. Little did he know I’d one day end up sitting at a keyboard all day drafting my own stories. “My writing journey has not been easy. I didn’t just sit down one day, decide I was going to write a book and voila! sell my very first attempt. As most authors will probably agree, the path to publication is filled with hours of work, pulling all-nighters I thought I’d given up in college, sacrifices, rejections, but a love I discovered along the way I just can’t live without. Instead of a big, thick book to read by lamplight (I do read much smaller ones when I get the chance), I’ve traded in my reading obsession for a laptop. And I’ve never been happier. “I’m one of the lucky ones. I have a wonderful family and fabulous husband who put up with my writing—and obsessive personality—even when life is chaotic. More than once my kids have been late to swimming or baseball because I needed just five more minutes to finish a scene. Their support and encouragement mean the world to me. I also have amazing friends and a support network I couldn’t survive without. So to all of you out there who have encouraged me along the way, sent me emails and fan letters, phone calls and congratulations, I just want to say, thank you. You make this whole writing gig that much more enjoyable. I truly wouldn’t be here without you.”

Book Description:

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Elisabeth Naughton comes a new story in her Eternal Guardians series…

RYDER–Mysterious, powerful, every woman’s fantasy come true.

For thousands of years, Ryder has reveled in his role as an immortal messenger—a dream weaver sent to seduce and manipulate. Until he’s ordered to deceive a fantasy of his own.

Zakara, the daughter of one of the mightiest Eternal Guardians, is his perfect woman. But she’s impervious to Ryder’s advances. Each attempt to sway her to his will pushes him deeper into a dreamscape she seems to be controlling. To survive, Ryder will need to find a way to master his sexy new prey. Because if he can’t, he risks forever condemning himself and the woman he’s grown to love to a never-ending nightmare drawn straight from the twisted depths of hell.

  EXCERPT:

She’d never been to this beach. She didn’t know if it was somewhere in Argolea—the blessed realm created by Zeus for the ancient heroes’ ancestors—or if she was somewhere in the human realm. All she knew was that she liked it. She liked how peaceful it was. Liked how breathtaking the scenery was. Liked that here—wherever she’d taken herself this time—no one was telling her what to do or pressuring her to be something she wasn’t. “I’d say you look lost, but something tells me you are exactly where you want to be,” a deep male voice said at her back. Kara whipped around, her long blonde hair blocking her vision before she brushed it aside, and stared at the man reclined on a padded chaise lounge on the beach. A man and chaise that hadn’t been there only moments before. A man who was vaguely familiar though she couldn’t figure out why. “I...who are you?” she asked. “Who do you want me to be?” His question made her blink. Who did she want him to be? She had no idea. All she knew was that an odd heat was building inside her. One she’d never experienced before. When he only continued to stare at her, she narrowed her eyes, running her gaze from his thick dark hair down his very muscular body. With his hands clasped behind his neck, his expression expectant, he looked relaxed and just the slightest bit amused. But there was a mysterious glint to his blue-green eyes that belied his stress-free exterior. And though he was gorgeous—tall, dark, and handsome in every way with that chiseled jaw, lush lips, and mesmerizing eyes—something in the back of her mind warned her to be careful. “Where did you come from?” she asked hesitantly. “We both know you weren’t here two seconds ago.” One side of those perfect lips curled. “I’m sure if you concentrate, you’ll know exactly where I came from, Zakara.” She didn’t like his riddles. And she didn’t like that he knew her name when she was still struggling to figure out who he was and why he was so familiar. But the longer he stared at her, the warmer she grew. And as his words circled in her head, it suddenly hit her like a baseball bat right to the forehead. “You’re that guy...” Her eyes grew wide with disbelief. “From my dreams.” He chuckled—a low, deep, captivating sound that was too perfect to be real. “That I am.”
