It hit me like a ton of bricks. So heavy and hard it almost took me to my knees. Roark had been going after the thing that mattered most to me from the very beginning. I cared about the people that still had a shot to make it out of the Point. I fought for the innocent and the young because I often felt like no one else was going to. Every person that Roark had hurt, had twisted, had infected in his quest to exact his revenge had been someone I’d sworn I would protect and keep safe.

It started with the kid whose neck he snapped and ditched outside of the Pit. Just some dumb jock barely in his twenties that liked to gamble, but he was just a kid and deserved a better end. Then it was the club. Before it burned to the ground, Nassir had been deliberately lured away and all the victims were just kids out looking for some trouble and fun. They lost their lives doing what kids all across the country did every single day. After that it was the girl on the dock and the armed stripper at Spanky’s. Two girls too young to be caught up in that kind of life and too young to be dead. Two girls I should’ve been able to keep safe. And lastly there was my brother. Sure, Bax was far from innocent, far from having a shot at a good and law-abiding life, but he was still my only family, my blood, and even if I had let him down in the past, I took my duty to keep him safe and keep him out of trouble to heart now. Killing Bax would have served the dual purpose of exacting revenge on the man who Roark thought was responsible for his father’s death and rubbing salt into the wound I would suffer for being unable to protect him.

The realization of how insidious and malicious as well as how fucking brilliant in his evil machinations Roark was had me shaking so hard I almost missed Brysen’s words as she whispered “Someone needs to stop him; he can’t be allowed to go after anyone anymore.”

I blew out a breath and tried to steady myself. “I’m trying.”

She narrowed her very blue eyes. “Try harder.”

No wonder Race was sprung on her. She looked like a doll but had the bite of a barracuda. She was his perfect match in that way—all golden and glossy on the outside but made of stronger, more resilient stuff on the inside. If Roark did have Karsen, I sure hoped the younger Carter was as tough as Brysen.

Just as the big, black utility vehicles with SWAT team members and the bomb technicians rolled up to the scene, the metal front doors at the front of the school clanked open and Booker came striding through with his arm wrapped around an obviously shaken and upset Karsen. The teen looked so tiny and fragile next to the giant man that it had murderous rage toward Roark thumping heavy not just through my heart but the heart of the beast that was wide awake in my chest and hungry for retribution.

Brysen let out a squeal and took off running toward the duo. I should’ve stopped her considering the building still wasn’t secure and I still had no idea where Roark was lurking, but I didn’t have the heart to keep her away from her sister. The two blondes hugged and then they were both crying as Booker was ripped away from the teen and slapped into cuffs by the same cop he has shoved over only moments before.

Karsen started yelling when the cop started to haul Booker away, but Brysen shushed her and guided her over to where I was still standing. I watched curiously as the guys dressed in black tactical gear unloaded a robot that looked like something from Star Wars and used a computer to guide it toward the front of the school. I was dying to know if they were going to find anything or if this had all been some elaborate ruse Roark had staged only to show me he had me right where he wanted me.

“Are you okay?” The teenager was crying big, fat, silent tears but she looked unharmed. She nodded and looked in the direction where the cops had taken Booker.

“Why is he getting arrested? He was the only one that came and looked for me.” Ouch. That accusation burned hot across my skin.

“He pushed a cop. They tend to take offense at that. Why were you still inside the building, Karsen? What happened?” I didn’t want to press her too hard because she was obviously pretty shaken up but I didn’t have any time to waste either.

My Review:

I am on the verge of speechless when it comes to this book.  As the cover says this book was Everything. Everything.  

"Love is worth everything. Everything."

I want to spend more time wrapped up in all that is this book, I want to get lost in the words and feelings, I want more charts and illustrations

Because they make me feel all the feels.  They make you want to go back to the days of first loves and sweet romances.  

Madeline has lived her life in a bubble.  She has a rare condition that has left her allergic to the world.  Since she was an infant she has lived inside her filtered, sterile, plastic house.   You would expect her to be depressed, to hate the life she lives, to hate her mother, her nurse, herself...but refreshingly this is a girl who has taken her illness in stride.  She has learned to love the life that she has been given, to appreciate the sacrifices made for her, she has learned to accept her disease.   She wants for nothing but deep down she craves EVERYTHING.  

I loved how strong Madeline is.  I loved that she doesn't whine and complain about her her life, I love that we see her fight sadness but that she never gives up on finding her own happiness in what she has.  Then she sees Olly and EVERYTHING changes.  

Olly is simply an amazing character.  He's full of heart, he's the guy every girl or guy wants to fall in love with.   He's no Emo kid, or player.  He's smart, but not overly nerdy, he's athletic but not a jock.  He's strong, but not overbearing.  He is kind....I love that most about him, he's a quiet kind guy who listens and watches.  Who dreams for not only himself but for the people that he loves.  He's been giving a bad situation in life but instead of letting it lead him on a downward spiral he tries to step back from it and make life better.  I loved that when he was allowed to meet Madeline in person he was careful with her.  I loved that he wasn't this guy who just comes in and takes over her life, I loved that he cared for her enough to want to have time with her anyway he could get it.  He is really just a great guy.  

I of course do not want to give you any spoilers so I don't want to talk too much about what happens in the book, but know that even through the hard parts this book makes you smile.  This book is a book about love.  The love of a mother for a child (even if there is a huge story there), the love of a child for her mother, for her caretaker, the love of a girl for a boy, a boy for a girl, the love of living.  There are plenty of sad things that come along with this book, sickness, mental illness, family strife, alcoholism, abuse, but there is just so much love that when it all ends your heart is full.

This is a quick read.  You will sit down and be done before you even realize it, yes because it isn't an extraordinarily long book, but mainly because you will be o wrapped up in the story, in the words, the drawings, the feelings that between the time you start the first page and the time you take your next blink you will come to the end and not understand how it could be over because it ends perfectly but at the same time you don't want it to end.  You want years of watching Maddy and Olly grow, you want reconciliation, redemption, little 'M-Ollys' running around.  You will finish and want EVERYTHING.  EVERYTHING.

I think one of the best compliments I can give a book is that when I am writing the review I will flip through pages looking for moments that I want to recollect or excerpts I want to use in the review and then I get sucked back into the words and loose myself, finding that I have read chapters over again, and not wanting to put the book back down to finish the review.  A book that can make you come back for more and more and never get tiring is a beautiful thing.  

Usually here I would say who I think this book is for.  What type of reader would enjoy it most and I can honestly say with this one that I think ANYONE (between the ages of 16 and 100) could pick up this book and fall in love.  Just remember as the cover of the book says...

"The Greatest Risk is Not Taking One."

Trust me, take the risk.  pick up this book and fall in love....

They, more than anyone, knows that life doesn't go according to plan.

Rike and Peyton fell in love in college. A boy with a guitar, and a poet's heart, and a girl with freckles dusted over her nose, a perfect fucking fairy tale.

But what happens when the fairy tale doesn't fall apart--but is forgotten?

My Review:

Let me start this review by saying, scroll back up and look at that cover, isn't it gorgeous?  Yes, it is what initially caught my eye and made me want to find out more about this book and I have to say I love it when a beautiful cover leads me to a good read.  

Before and After is a love story, a love story told in the most unexpected way.  It is a story about discovering who you are and learning even after tragedy that being true to yourself and loving yourself is more important than being what others expect of you.  

Peyton and Rike come from opposite walks of life.  Peyton is the daughter of an 'upper crust' political family and Rike is the foster care boy from the wrong side of the tracks.  Yet they come together because in each other they find a similar soul.  This is a bit of a difficult review in that there isn't a lot that can be said about the story with out giving everything away.  Before and After is not a long book (which we will talk about in a minute), only around 200 pages, so everything happens quickly making an in-depth discussion a challenge. 

So while I loved the storyline for this book and I loved the concept of the dual POV, Before coming from Peyton's POV and After coming from Rike's I have to say that I struggled for the first few chapters to get used to the constant back and forth.  Once I got comfortable with the idea though I really enjoyed 'seeing' both these sides coming together.  

I loved Rike, plain and simple.  Rike is an emotionally sweet guy and he really isn't afraid to show it.  He wears his heart on his sleeve and he loves with everything that he has.  While I never fully understand his choice to not disclose everything to Peyton I was heartbroken watching him suffer through her memory loss and his willingness to walk away from her because he loved her enough to allow her the chance to become whoever she wanted to be. However, let me say that while he is what I called 'emotionally sweet' he is not a weak character, he is not a push over and he does have those alpha traits that we women seem to love.  It really just makes him a character that you can not help but fall in love with.

Peyton, is a bit more difficult for me.  While I liked her I also struggled to connect with her.  I think however that is all on me.  It comes down to me thinking what would I do in her situation.  How would I respond and those thoughts lead me to be overly frustrated with her at times.  Of course I can't say how I would respond to loosing my memory so it is a bit unfair of me to put my frustrations on her for her decisions, but it is what it is.  I think I connected more with Rike because I could understand the pain he was feeling.  

  On to the length of the book, I would have liked more of a background story for Rike and for Peyton as well to be honest.  A novella would have (would be) been fantastic because I think that there is so much more to both of them then we got to 'see'.  I want to know what really went down with Peyton's family because it feels as though there is something deep and dark there but we don't know what it is.  I wanted more for Scott and Lindsey and while this is a Stand Alone, I am hoping that maybe they will get their own book because I think they and we deserve it.  Their story is as much a part of this book as Rike and Peyton's and I felt a little like we were left hanging there.  I am also hoping that there could be a book for Peyton's brother!  This story has the makings of a nice series and if you look at any reviews you will see that we all agree, we love the story and we want more!  

Even though I want more I will say that this is a great read if you are looking for a quick romantic story that will have you swooning, crying, laughing (ahhhh, Jokes!!!) and fanning yourself (yes there are some pretty steamy moments), would it be wrong of me to call this book a quickie, good, fast, and satisfying in the end?  

I would call this book a great beach or poolside read for the summer because you can have it read in no time at all and leave with a smile on your face.  You will have a bit of a book hangover because you won't have wanted it to end, but know that at the same time you won't be disappointed in Rike and Peyton's story.  It is a moving story that will make you think about what you would do in that situation.  All I know is I would hope to have a Rike by my side! 

Perfect fast read for anyone looking for a contemporary romance, especially if you are in that in-between books phase and can't decide what is next, make this one next!

“Better?” he asked.

“A little. How long have we been here?”

“I’m not sure. But probably not as long as you think.”

“More of the Harbinger’s tricks?” I tugged at my clothes, only to notice that they’d shifted back at some point. So… was I wrong before? Am I wearing the same dress? The constant unreality might wreck my brain.

“Mostly. I think.” 

The Harbinger stopped his bizarre frolicking to clap his hands, and the sound rang out like thunder, much louder than anyone else could achieve with two palms. “We have one final diversion before the feast is ended. Shall I show you?”

Like before, the mob practically destroyed the ballroom with enthusiasm. By then, numbness had taken over; I could only exist in a state of abject terror for so long. Along with everyone else, I watched as two giant amorphous moth-beasts dragged someone up onto the dais. At first glance, I thought it was a girl but when the person rolled over, I realized it was a boy, probably fourteen or so, and small for his age. Definitely human, unless this was the best illusion ever. His terror was palpable, and it made the immortals nearby stir with avid anticipation. 

“Delicious,” something with sharp teeth hissed.

The boy came up onto his knees, resting delicate hands on the floor before him in a posture of defeat so abject that I took a step forward. Bruises ringed his throat and his wrists, and what he had on could barely be called clothes; the shirt was torn in three places and the pants had frayed until they hit his knees, revealing filthy calves and feet that were sliced up as if he was routinely forced to walk across broken glass. On his right hand, two of the fingers were bent at unnatural angles, either broken now, or they had been, then they healed badly afterward.

“Kian…” I whispered. “I don’t like where this is going.”

“This one has a most impressive survival instinct,” the Harbinger said, indicating the cowering boy with a flourish. “He’s been my favorite pet for some time. But his luck might run out today. Shall we find out?”

The audience rumbled in agreement, and the room changed. I had no explanation for it, but suddenly it seemed as if we’d moved from the ballroom entirely. We were standing outside an arena now with a blood-stained pit below. Bones littered the floor of it, along with broken weapons. Snarls came from the sublevel, enough to chill my blood.

“Time for a bit of fun,” the Harbinger said.

Before I knew what I planned to do, I broke away from Kian. He reached for me but I wasn’t stopping. I’d been passive for too long, waiting and hoping that things would get better. It was time for me to fight, even if I didn’t know how. Yeah, there might be fallout, but the Harbinger had to protect me, right? Even if I interfered with his grisly show.

Scared didn’t cover how I felt just then. This is a death match, a gladiator fight, and you’ve never even played Mortal Kombat. You don’t know shit about knives or swords or whatever. You’re probably going to lose. Horribly. 

But I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I stood by and watched. 

When I climbed up on the stage, the Harbinger was a statue, lightning eyes flashing astonishment and displeasure. But he held still and waited for me to play my card. Maybe Dwyer was right, and I’d end up broken if I participated in their game. I only knew that I was sick and tired of being moved on the board.
