Black Hole Infection by Nazarea Andrews - Review

Author: Nazarea Andrews
Publication Date:  7 January 2018
Publisher: Self-Published
Series:  The Hopeless World, book 2
Genre:  Apocalyptic SciFi
Age Recommendation: 18 and Up
Rating: 3.5 Stars
~ I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ~

Book Description:

They thought they knew how the world ends…
Parker has always been other, an outsider in the Last Holdout, a strange almost feral creature that trusted Josiah. Josiah always accepted his strangeness as a strength.
Africa changed everything.
Parker is different here. Dangerous and powerful in a way neither knew he could be. It's terrifying.
But if they are going to survive the continent, they'll need to trust each other--and their reluctant allies--in ways they never have before.
All of Africa is watching them as they change the balance of power.
And the zombies aren't the only things trying to kill them.

My Review:

So I am waffling a little on how I feel about this one.  I think that the concept and the plot are great, but to be honest it gets pretty darn confusing at times and pretty fast.  I spent the first 30% of the book almost totally lost and trying to understand how the story was being presented, some of that I am aware is because I had an ARC that was unformatted and at times things ran together, but I don't rate a book on how well the ARC is put together, that's an understanding reviewers go into when it comes to ARC copies, we all know they aren't finished. I think a lot of my challenge came in the form of  the flashbacks and just trying to keep up with when and who was talking.  The voice switches between Parker and Josiah and I'd be reading who I thought was Parker when all the sudden the character mentions Parker and I had to sit there all "wait, whaaat?' for a few seconds and then go backwards until I found the voice switch.

With all that said I will say that I loved these characters themselves and the couples.  I loved that our two main characters are a gay couple and that is that.  There is no drama over who they are sexually either with themselves or with those around them, it simply is as it should be.  It's nice to read about a couple and not have everyone questioning their sexuality or making a huge deal of it, like they wouldn't if it was a hetro couple.  Parker and Josiah simply are and I loved that.  I also loved the strength and belief that they had in one another.

This is a series that I believe whole heartedly you MUST start from book one.  Trying to jump in at book two and understand this world that Nazarea has created will make it almost impossible to truly enjoy the story.  There are too many facets lying underneath the story and each character to miss out on how they got there.  I also do believe that even with my struggles that this is a series worth reading.  It's deep, it's a bit dark, it can be complicated but at it's core it is also beautiful.  To see the way these characters survive and to see them love is worth a little ounce of any frustration.

~ HAPPY READING ~
