Book Description:

To live in the light, they hunt in the dark…

The power of Helena’s magic has made her a target for the Coven. She wanted no part in the war of the witches, but it’s out of her hands now. She has to make a stand – and she does that by helping the Hunters and their allies against their common enemy. And now, the witch who ripped Helena’s future apart is coming. Sybbyl’s vengeance is swift and terrible, pitting the two against each other. But Helena doesn’t have to fight the Coven alone. A seductive warlock offers his aid. Helena is hesitant to give her trust to him – because it’s more than her life on the line. It’s her heart as well. As the most feared and respected warrior of the Varroki, Jarin is used to being on his own. But with the Coven’s quest to locate the bones of the First Witch escalating, he finds it increasingly difficult to retain his solitary existence. When Jarin encounters Helena, he is helpless to resist her. She’s everything he didn’t know he wanted, and with her help, he’s convinced that maybe his people can finally defeat their foe. But there’s so much more at play than they know―ties in blood and sacrifice―and the loss that’s sure to follow may be greater than any of them can bear.

My Review:

Somehow every time I read a Donna Grant book I swear that it is my favorite one ever, but this time I think that will hold true, at least of The Kindred series.  This book was not only what we have become accustom to in a Donna Grant novel, the romance, the action, the twists and turns, (oh those twists and turns!) but also a deeply emotional journey for this couple, The Hunters, and The Varroki.

This is the third full novel in The Kindred series, there is a prequel novella, Everkin, that I highly suggest reading prior to this one.  You can jump in here and not be completely lost, but I think your enjoyment of the series will be greater if you begin at the beginning.  We jump right into the thick of things with Helena on the run from the Coven, surviving almost solely on sheer will, things take a drastic turn for her when one of the fabled Varroki show up.  Decision and plans must be made, lives are put at stake, and love begins to shine for more than one couple.

I will be honest there is one completely shocking moment for me and I have no idea how Donna is going to play this.  I see that there is a story being born but it is very difficult as a reader to walk away from the other, especially in the dramatic fashion in which it occurred.  It was truly a WTF did she just do moment and completely unexpected.  I admit I love it as much as I hate it, lol.

There are so many twists and turns, a staple of a Donna Grant book, so giving you a run down of the book would completely tragic on my part and I wouldn't do that to you so  there isn't a ton of information to give you except expect the unexpected.

You will fall in love with this couple.  I love all of Donna's couples, their love always runs deep, but there is something to me special about this couple.  The openess they have, the choices they must make, the emotional pain that Helena has endured and the solitary life that Jarin has lead, to see them come together and be exactly what the other needs is beautiful.  If you are looking for a strong heroine look no further than Helena.  She has made her own way for so long and will do everything in her poser to protect not only the ones that she loves but all of humanity.  Jarin, what can I say? He is one of those hero's that could have totally gone alpha bad boy but is instead a quiet beautiful soul full of strength and compassion.  I am also entirely in love with Valdr and Andi, Jarin's extraordinary 'friends' that you must meet.

If you are looking for a fantasy read that will keep you flipping pages look no further.  I am so ready for the next book in this series, until you have read it you can't know exactly how ready I am, haha.  I won't say that there is a huge cliff hanger, but Donna definitely leaves us wanting to know who, what, and when.  It can't come soon enough!

~ HAPPY READING ~

Book Description:

One angry, grieving boy. Chase DeWitt is fourteen when his mother dies and he stumbles into the woods beyond his home, angry and heartbroken. He didn’t know that it would change the course of his life.

Two broken, lonely men.  Tyler Reid is twenty three, grumpy and angry, trying to take care of a injured brother, and rebuilding a life blind hatred destroyed in one night. But he understands the boy who stumbles out of the woods and into his life, understands the grief in his eyes and the rage that makes him shake. And there is something in that familiar grief that makes Tyler trust Chase, when trusting humans has only ever lead to disaster.

And a falling down house they make a home.  As the summer passes and the years turn, Chase cares for Tyler’s brother, helps him rebuilding the house in the woods, as they help each other rebuild a life beyond the little house, Chase realizes two important things: these men matter to him, could be family. And they are not nearly as human as they seem.

My Review:

So this one is a struggle for me to review for two reasons.  One, I loved the concept of this book.  I love the emotions, I love watching this family grow and change over time.  Two, and this is where the but comes in.  I struggled to read this story, particularly in the beginning as it has a very slow start.  But more for the fact that it feels very stream of consciousness on the writer's part.  I had challenges at times keeping up with who was talking and more the when of it all.  Time jumps ahead at a pretty good clip in the story and things are obviously said that we aren't privy too (for instance when ever Chase told Tyler about the death of his mother.  We never see that happen but from a later conversation it is clear that at some point Chase has told Tyler and Logan about what occurred.) and that throws me way off.

There is a dramatic shift that occurs (though it is a slow road to get there, perhaps that is why the title is Show Shift?) about midway through the book when we change from a bit of a contemporary coming of age story to more of the paranormal/urban fantasy feel.  Once that shift occurs  and the action begins the book really picks up and you find yourself flipping pages faster than your brain can maybe process the words on the page.  I love the man that Chase grows into and the length he is willing to go to protect those that he loves, that all plays out the second half of the book and is well worth the slow beginning.

The thing is though,  I can't not like this book regardless of all the little things that might make my head twitch, and cause me to give it 4 instead of 5 stars,  because the fact is this is just plain and simple a beautiful story about acceptance.  About finding a family that completes you (yes, that sounds corny but it's true), about discovering who you are, who you were meant to be, and about love...most of all about love.

I think it is important that you know going in that this isn't your typical paranormal read.  This is a book that lives in a realm of cross genres, one where it is hard to pin point exactly what type of book this is.  It is a book that becomes more than it's genre, it is a book that is the story itself and you have to let that story guide you.  What I want to say is, don't give up!  Keep reading and you will find that the reward of knowing these characters and the depth of their love out weighs all imperfections.

*Sidenote* I truly hope that Nazarea puts this one out in Paperback because I am in LOVE with this cover and need it on my shelf!

Excerpt:

“Are you really ok with this?” Chase asks later that night when Tyler slips into his bedroom and curls behind him on his bed. It’s not small but it always feels like it is when Tyler is in it with him. He’s quiet, so Chase tilts his head back and says, “You don’t have to. We can find another way.” “I’m ok. We need to do this,” Tyler says. Chase nods. He touches the runes tattooed on Tyler’s ribs, the ones he marked Tyler with, and Tyler arches into the touch. “Remember you’re mine, Tyler. Whatever happens, whatever she says, you’re mine. And I won't let her hurt what's mine.” Tyler shuffles into him, presses his face into Chase’s throat, and they cling to each other as the night deepens around them.

A Duke Changes Everything by Chisty Carlyle - Spotlight, Excerpt, and GiveAway

Perfect for fans of Lorraine Heath and Tessa Dare. The first book in the new Victorian romance series The Duke’s Den, A DUKE CHANGES EVERYTHING, by Christy Carlyle has the romance and brooding hero that readers will fall in love with.

Out November 27th – A Duke Changes Everything by Christy Carlyle

Book Description:

In the first novel in Christy Carlyle’s sizzling Duke’s Den series, three men, intent on making a fortune, discover irresistible opportunities . . .

Nicholas Lyon gambled his way into a fortune and ownership of the most opulent, notorious gentlemen’s club in England. But when Nick’s cruel brother dies, he inherits a title he never wanted. The sooner Nick is rid of the estate that has always haunted him, the sooner he can return to the life he’s built in London. But there’s one obstacle—the exquisite Thomasina Thorne.

When the new heir to the Tremayne dukedom suddenly appears in Mina Thorne’s life, she’s flustered. Not only is he breathtakingly handsome, but he’s also determined to take away her home and position as steward of the Enderley estate. If Mina learns what makes the enigmatic duke tick, perhaps she can change his mind—as long as she doesn’t get too close to him.

With each day Nick spends with Mina, his resolve weakens as their colliding wills lead to explosive desire. Could she be the one woman who can help him finally bury the ghosts of his past?

Excerpt from A Duke Changes Everything:

“Your sleep was troubled?” she asked softly.

“It always is.”

“I heard you call out. I thought you said my name.” Mina swallowed hard after the admission. She’d probably misheard him, but some rationale felt necessary to explain her presence in his room.

“Did I? Perhaps you’re haunting me in my sleep.” He did that thing with his thumb again, a seductive slide against her skin. His touch rippled out to spark goose bumps along her arm and heat between her thighs.

“You don’t remember your dreams?” she asked, her voice trembling like her insides.

“I try not to.”

“What troubles you?”

“Everything.” He let out a low chuckle, like the rusty creak of a door hinge. Lowering his chin, he assessed her. “Especially you.”

“I never intended to.” She pulled her hand from the duke’s, ignoring the shiver that spiked up her spine from the friction of his skin sliding against hers. “I’ll leave you so that you can get back to sleep.”

“Mina, wait.” He reached out, caught the edge of her arm, and a few strands of unpinned hair tangled between his fingers. “There’s something I must say before you go.”

She moved closer. He was utter temptation, all blazing heat and forest scents, and she felt an odd comfort being near him. She knew she should be scandalized. To be alone with him, a duke of the realm. A gambling club owner. Especially while he wore nothing but trousers and a half-buttoned shirt.

The Witch of the Prophecy by Victoria Jayne - Spotlight, Excerpt, and Giveaway

All signs point to Divina being the witch of the catastrophic prophecy, but she’s not so sure.
Out Now! – The Witch of the Prophecy by Victoria Jayne.

Book Description:

Divina’s had it with the prophecy.

The vampire whose heart beats for a witch that belongs to a wolf shall save us all. He shall take his throne and rule over all kinds. If not, the vampire who belongs to the witch will end all kinds.

Divina’s not convinced the prophecy is about her. Her manipulative vampire ex-boyfriend, Rori, is reluctant to give up his love for her to pursue the throne. Meanwhile, the wolf shifter meant to claim Divina doesn’t believe in the prophecy. However, he does believe Divina is his mate.

With the pressures of the prophecy and the most powerful coven in the present-day United States, Divina is left to choose between complying with the prophecy and mating with Aric—or leaving it all behind to allow the catastrophic possibility of supernatural beings getting exposed to humans.

Excerpt:

Out in the middle of nowhere, with no clothes, and smelling the equivalent of filet mignon, his wolf had set him up well. Torn between the desire to investigate the fragrance, and maintaining human societal norms of modesty, Aric lingered under the cover of bushes and trees.

CRACK!

Metaphorical thunderbolts splintered before his eyes. Pain shot through his skull as he flew forward bracing himself on all fours. Aric’s hand reached to the back of his head protectively and to check for bleeding.

“What the fuck!?” he rumbled in confusion.

“Who are you?” a feminine voice demanded.

Lifting his chest, getting to his knees, Aric turned toward the sound of crunching leaves beneath shuffling feet. Blinking a few times did nothing to cure his double vision. He assumed he had a concussion. If he had been human, he’d be unconscious. The pain in his head throbbed while Aric struggled to see properly.

“W-wh-why are you naked?” the female voice questioned him.

Rising to his feet, Aric shifted his position, in an attempt to both hide the chubby semi-erection and to offer some modesty. It must have been interpreted as a sign of aggression.

Aric heard the whoosh and put his arm up to block the giant branch the female wielded as a weapon. The vibration of pain ricocheted up his forearm when it collided with the impromptu weapon. Aric howled and his eyes watered.

Aric twisted his wrist, wrapped his fingers around the branch, and yanked. It came loose from her hands quickly. He tossed the stick away and thanked his supernatural genes and the strength given to him by his wolf, who, oddly, pranced about within him with elation rather than recognizing the aggression the woman showed toward them.

“Wha—” she gasped.

Still unable to see her clearly, the blurry female form stepped back from him. Aric wobbled slightly and fell to his knees again for stability.

Once his vision slowly returned to normal, and in the glow of the moon, he gasped when he finally laid focused eyes on her visage. Her high cheekbones, plump lips, golden skin tone stunned him. His mouth fell open. The mass of dark waves pulled into a messy pony shimmered in the moonlight giving her a halo effect. Aric felt as if he knelt at the feet of a goddess.

She wore an extremely large, faded, hooded sweatshirt and tight jeans. Aric lifted himself to a standing position on shaky knees. He stood several inches over her at his full height. His wolf howled within him while he fought the wolf’s urge to grab the woman. It did nothing to ease the pounding pain in his head from her attack.

“You’re magnificent,” he murmured.

The unknown female took another step away from him.

“Uh, thanks?” she said.

Her pale blue eyes darted left and right, as though she searched for an escape route.

The throbbing pain in the back of his head dulled as he studied her. He absentmindedly raised a hand and rubbed at the place where she had struck him. The semi was now a full-on raging erection and proudly protruded from his pelvis as if to salute her.

Aric’s face heated when her eyes dipped to it. Her cheeks reddened. She held a hand over her mouth.

“Oh my God!” she gasped.

Her expression reflected panic. She bent her knees prepared to run. Her eyes sought the best escape route.

“No. Don’t,” Aric protested, surprising himself.

She paused. The female stared at him, bewildered.

He brought both his hands over his crotch. “Sorry.”

“Why are you naked?” she demanded a second time.

“Uh,” Aric stalled. For some reason, he didn’t think telling her he had just shifted from wolf to human form would be a good idea. Humans tended to freak out when confronted with creatures they thought were mythical. Plus, there was the whole death thing, if the council found out about a supernatural being outing himself to humans. They took that shit super serious. Aric liked his life. He liked it even more, having met this female.
