Spindle Fire by Lexa Hillyer - Review and Giveaway

Author: Lexa Hillyer
Publication Date:  11 April, 2017
Publisher: Harper Teen
Series:  Spindle Fire, book 1
Genre:  Young Adult, Fantasy
Age Recommendation: 13 and up
Rating: 4 Stars
~ I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ~

Book Description:

Half sisters Isabelle and Aurora are polar opposites: Isabelle is the king's headstrong illegitimate daughter, whose sight was tithed by faeries; Aurora, beautiful and sheltered, was tithed her sense of touch and her voice on the same day. Despite their differences, the sisters have always been extremely close.

And then everything changes, with a single drop of Aurora's blood--and a sleep so deep it cannot be broken.

As the faerie queen and her army of Vultures prepare to march, Isabelle must race to find a prince who can awaken her sister with the kiss of true love and seal their two kingdoms in an alliance against the queen.

Isabelle crosses land and sea; unearthly, thorny vines rise up the palace walls; and whispers of revolt travel in the ashes on the wind. The kingdom falls to ruin under layers of snow. Meanwhile, Aurora wakes up in a strange and enchanted world, where a mysterious hunter may be the secret to her escape . . . or the reason for her to stay.

Spindle Fire is the first book in a lush fantasy duology set in the dwindling, deliciously corrupt world of the fae and featuring two truly unforgettable heroines.

My Review:

I was so seriously excited when this book came to my attention, I mean just look at that description: Sleeping Beauty, an until now unknown illegitimate daughter,  Faerie Queen(s), princes, true love....it was hard not to jump for joy and beg, BEG, to be put on this tour.  What you don't read but may see between the lines is the amount of action and adventure, the bonds that will be tested, the feelings that will be discovered (in more ways than one), the fear, the small happy moments that let two princesses struggling to do what's right, to save their world and each other, breathe.

Let's talk about the two sisters.  I was really excited and hopeful that we would get a book with strong sisterly bonds and kick arse female leads.  I was thrilled to see that Spindle Fire revolves around two, really four, female characters, the two princesses, Aurora and Isabella and two faeries, Malfleur and Belcoeur.  We get what I think we have all come to expect of the Fae, if you have ever read Sleeping Beauty or seen the movie re-tellings...they're both more than a little nuts and cruel and yet they weren't just born this way. It wasn't nature but nurture that develops these women into who they became.
Aurora is Aurora....she is the Aurora you expect her to be if she had never truly fallen asleep in the original story.  Kind, queenly, beautiful, a bit impatient, proud, (but not overly) and determined to save her kingdom even if she isn't sure how.
The one who will surprise you and I suppose it isn't any surprise at all is Isabelle, (who often goes and Isbe and who I still call Isabelle because I am not quite certain how that is supposed to be pronounced, Is-be?) her life began with her questionable heritage and honestly while pampered her life still felt as though perhaps she was brought over from Cinderella.  While her sister Aurora clearly loves her and they have a strong bond, she was never thought of as more than the king's illegitimate child. Even the king and queen (can we say petty and selfish...I was really disappointed in that) use her and consider her a throw away.  Having her sight taken from her as a child she never lets that handicap her and in fact uses it to her advantage by honing her other senses.  She, being the child of a kingdom that never really cared whether she lived or not, except for the tithe she paid for her sister, is going to be the one to save it and I love that about her.  I love that she is able to look past her personal pain and 'see' that she has the power to fight for and protect her sister and her home.

Onto the secondary characters.  I have some pretty mixed feelings here.
Heath, he's the bad boy of the group and completely bi-polar, which is explained by the 'are you real or aren't you' problem, but he still makes you want to shake him.
Wren, I don't know exactly what is up with this girl, I mean I know...but she feels a bit like the fake female friend that I hate and I really hope that isn't how things play out.
Gilbert, dude...do I cry for you, do I shake you senseless along with Heath and tell you to man-up, you are giving me the most angst out of everyone!
William, sweet William...I kinda really like you, I think.  You are a tad obliging perhaps, maybe there is a bit of something going on in your mind that you aren't sharing with anyone else...what exactly do you expect to get out of all of this, oil? But I think I like you and I  am going to be exceedingly sad to see your heart get broken so I can't let myself like you that much, you know just in case.

Now a few complaints, sorry....as much as I want to shout that this book is perfection there were a few things that made it 4 stars instead of 5 for me.  First, this is a heavily descriptive book.  I realize that with the start of a new fantasy series the world building is going to be detailed in the book, but there were times were I was completely bogged down into the mire and minutia, it felt a bit exhaustive. I feel like we could have lost a good 50 pages with a tad more editing.  Second, I wish we had been given more time with the sisters.  I loved seeing them become the women they do as they fight to save each other and their kingdom, but while we know they have a strong bond I feel like the short time we got with them together in the beginning of the story doesn't fully set the tone for who they are to each other, in fact, there is a lot of back and forth at times on whether they even really like each other.  Third, each chapter is a different voice.  The chapters bounce back and forth between the sisters and the Faerie and it can get frustrating.  I love seeing what each sister is doing from her own perspective and that would have been enough but sometimes having the Faerie's thoughts and doings and the occasional random Fae thrown into the mix makes you want to reach through the pages and just tell them to stop for a minute.  Especially when it comes to Belcoeur...her moments are pure madness which is perfect for her, not so great for you the reader when you are trying to grasp what all is going on.  That leads me to Fourth...there is A LOT going on in this book. Four plus points of view, an extreme amount of world building, two, count them two separate love TRIANGLES, mystery, magic, intrigue, plots....it is jammed pack with a ton of information. Which is about how I feel about my review right now.

It's hard not to wax on and on about this book because there is simply so much to talk about.  The good for me totally out weighed the bad making it four stars and wishing hard that I could have given it five. The strength of the sisters, the bonds, the new take on an old favorite that really hasn't gotten it's due until now, the action, the adventure, the world....all of these pieces come together and make a wonderful story, I simply wish in the end that perhaps the editor had gone a bit more heavy with their red pen.

Until recently with my discovery of YA fantasy I have never been a huge Fantasy reader, I am not a fan of JRR Tolken, or Terry Brooks, but I have slowly started to fall in love with this genre through authors like Leigh Bardugo, Sarah J. Maas, and Taran Matharu, and I think that this series has amazing potential.  I am looking forward to seeing where Lexa Hillyer takes us.  There is an epic journey to be had and two female characters that could take the fantasy world by storm!  I will definitely be picking up book two and heading back into the world of Spindle Fire!

P.S.
Reading this book was beautiful but as an audio book listener as well as reader, I think that listening to this book would be amazing. I think being able to completely immerse yourself into the world, to close your eyes and just allow it to play out behind your eye lids would only enhance this story. You won't regret reading this book the 'old fashioned' way, but hey if you have an Audible credit laying around looking for the perfect book, this may be the one.  Sidetone: I have not listened to this book, I do not know the narrator that was used so I can not testify to the narrators skill, I just know from reading it and how the entire book is woven it would make a beautiful story to simply hear and feel.

Lifeboat Clique by Kathy Parks - Blog Tour

Book Description:

Some people might say that Denver had a death wish. Why else would she have dared to sneak into a Malibu beach party where she’d be surrounded by enemies, namely including her ex-BFF Abigail?

Oh yeah. Croix. Denver never thought in a million years he’d ask her out, but who was she to question this miracle of fate? Well, that wasn’t the only surprise fate had in store.

During the party a tsunami hit the coast of California, wiping out everything in its path. Denver and a handful of others escaped death by holding onto the roof of the house and were swept out to sea. Of course, one of her fellow castaways was none other than Abigail, who could barely stand the sight of her.

Now that she’s floating in the ocean, stuck on a small boat with the most popular kids in school and waiting to be rescued, Denver wonders what might kill her first-dehydration, sunstroke, or the girl she used to think of as a sister?

A hilariously dark and twisted story that sparkles with a remarkably fresh voice, The Lifeboat Clique is Kathy Park’s irreverent yet insightful novel about how to survive in the most unthinkable circumstances.

My Review:

This is one of those books that you find yourself struggling to figure out how to review not because it was good or bad, great or horrid, but because you can emotionally connect with the characters on such a level that it is simply hard to voice your thoughts because they seem so personal.  Now I will admit, although begrudgingly, high school was a long time ago for me but there is no doubt that when it came to my high school life I was in the same 'boat' (not to be puny) as Denver.  I wasn't the cool kid, I wasn't the ostracized, I was simply there in the middle of the crowd just working my way through each day and waiting anxiously for it to be over.  My brain shouted out a lot of the same things that Denver says...and therein lies the difference between Denver and myself, Denver says what is on her mind.  Being the quiet girl that I am I have to say that I was at first a little put off by this.  I wasn't originally very fond of Denver, but then the more I read the more I became enamored with the way she stood up for herself, the way she fought back, the way she refuses to be anyone other than herself and ultimately it is those things about her that save her.

The second reason I find myself struggling to review this book is because...well it's freaking laugh out loud funny and in truth their is a lot about this book that is not funny at all.  I mean where do you go with that, one minute you are gasping because the author has gone all George R.R. Martin on these high school kids and the next you are laughing out loud at the sheer absurdity and clever quips.  It leaves you feeling a tad bit guilty, but that guilty where you just can't stop giggling.

The third reason and this is strictly a me reason that I struggle is because I want redemption for people but I also want vengeance on others.  I think I am a very black and white person in some respects and when it comes to books I have this burning desire for people to get their comeuppance when they deserve it and to be given a second chance when they show a deep and honest change.  Sadly there are some situations where this doesn't happen and it left me feeling a little let down.  I will say strongly that I think that comes right back to my red-headed Taurus old lady attitude though so take that with a huge grain of salt, but know that there may be some outcomes that leave you wanting.

The reasons this book isn't difficult to review.  The writing style, the world that Kathy builds, the truth behind the clique behavior of high schoolers, the ups and downs of friendships and families.  I loved how Kathy Parks writes these teenagers, there is nothing fake (unless it is meant to be) about them or their speech.  There is a truth in the words she gives them, there is a truth in the feelings they project...these are teenagers (from any age...these are the same teenagers that went to high school with me and they will be the same teenagers that go to high school with my daughters), these are their thoughts, their feelings, their struggles.  Yes, everything is magnified but what is amazing to me in this book is that honestly the craziness of the story isn't the story at all.  The story is watching these teenagers live and grow.  Watching them come to understand that life is more than what is happening at their school lunch tables but knowing that even in the end of everything the only thing that they can truly change is themselves and maybe in the end that is enough.

This is really a great read, one that I laughingly say is the perfect summer beach read.  That may seem a tad ironic but it truly is.  If you haven't put this on your summer TBR then do it, you will not be disappointed.  Due to some of the conversations revolving around sex and drinking I do recommend a bit of a higher aged YA reader (Young Adult books are typically recommended from ages 12-18), the teens in this book are 'older'  teens and they have some 'older' teen situations so keep that in mind when you are considering the book for your younger YA readers, you know your reader best!  This book should be one of the hits of summer so grab it up now!

THEY HAVE ARRIVED

AND THERE’S NO GOING BACK

Book Description:

Bad boy Kaidan Rowe has never wanted for anything—money, popularity, musical talent…hot girls—but seducing them is part of his duty as a Nephilim, slave to the demon Dukes. As the son of the Duke of Lust, Kaidan has learned his father’s ways, becoming a master of passion, a manipulator of chemistry. Disobeying his father would mean certain death. Thankfully for Kaidan, he’s good at his job. And he enjoys it.

Until he meets Anna Whitt—sweet, smart, feisty, and inexplicably good—the one girl seemingly immune to his charms. The daughter of a guardian angel and a fallen one, she has a certain power over him, one that makes him wish for more than he could ever deserve.

Determined to save all the Neph from their dark lives as the influencers of sin, Anna joins forces with Kaidan to overcome the demons’ oppressive ways. In the light of her affections, Kaidan must undergo his toughest test of all, a battle of the heart.

***Sensual and swoon worthy, this companion volume to the acclaimed Sweet Evil series from New York Times bestselling author Wendy Higgins, told from the perspective of the irresistibly sexy and mysterious Kaidan Rowe, gives readers revealing insights into his struggle, his intense connection to Anna, and most of all, the true emotions that drive him.***

TOUR SCHEDULE:
Week 1:

Week 2

The prep for this tour has been an emotional journey for me with some amazing moments and quite a bit of stress, but it was only stressful because I love this series and these characters so much that I am terrified of not doing them the justice they deserve.

You see when I was asked to join this tour, it wasn't just any other review tour, we were asked to make it special, to add something that we love to the process and well I found myself in a huge conundrum...what could I do?  I don't have any special talents, I am not artist or inclined to creative genius.  I'm a stay at home, homeschooling Army wife/mom, that runs when I can, reads non-stop, drinks beer, likes to bake, and fawns over StarLord (or just Chris Pratt in general) ...none of these non-talent talents would do me any good here.  So, what did I decide?  I apparently decided to do the most insane thing ever and reach way back into my skill set and do a photo stop.  I have rarely picked up my camera since the invention of camera phones so you can well imagine how this all played out.  In the long run though, I think I got some pretty good photos, photos that reminded me of Kaidan and Anna and will hopefully give you a glimpse into who they are.  I have to say I had a good time searching out these pictures either through old boxes of photos from years ago (hello Grand Canyon, which I have sadly never visited (what is wrong with the world that I haven't been there?) but luckily my husbands family had when he was younger.), driving through Washington DC looking for pictures that reflect the story, or creating my own little vignettes for aspects that I couldn't find anywhere else.

My Review:

I don't want to really review the story too much here because I don't want to give anything away if you haven't read the first three books.  This is a companion novel to the series, the story is in a sense the same, but the details are all new.

It was so interesting to go into this book because you think you know it all.  We've heard the story, we know how it ends, but in actuality we know so very little. We know the story from Anna's eyes, from her thoughts and feelings.  To learn the same from Kaidan's point of view is another amazing journey with this wonderful story and cast of characters.

I can tell you this; if you thought you loved Kai already, you have no idea.  He is so much more than any of us could ever imagine, except perhaps Anna...she has always seen who he truly is and it is a beautiful thing.  This book will have you swooning all over again as well as heart broken for Kai and anxious that even though you know how it is all supposed to go something will happen and the happiness we now know he truly deserves will be lost to him.  It doesn't happen to me often that I am as enamored with a follow up book as I was with the originals but in this case I am absolutely head over heels in love with this story again and maybe even more than I was before.

Wendy Higgin's makes this entire cast of characters come to life on her pages.  The depth in character development for Kaiden is as beautiful as it is complex.  We always knew his life was not sunshine and lollipops but truly understanding the depth of depravity and pain that he has been forced to grow up with cracks your heart wide open.  To see his interactions with his friends and theirs with him bring another level to the story that we didn't get in the first three books and just enhances the richness of it.  I keep thinking of Shrek and his layers upon layers, this story is deeper than we ever imagined.  And then Kaidan and Anna, all I can say is that with out reading this book you will never know, never truly understand the love that he has for her and how deep it runs.

If you have read the three prior books in this series I can not suggest strongly enough that you now go get this one, you WILL NOT regret having this book in your collection.  If you have not read the series yet, DO, this is absolutely one of my all time favorite Paranormal Romances period!

Two things to note:  First, if you have not read the series already, do not start here.  You will loose so much and all of the discoveries made in this book will not shine as brightly as they would if you start with Sweet Evil (book 1).  Second, this is a YA series, the first 3 books I would not hesitate to recommend to a younger YA crowd (14 and up), Kai's book is a bit grittier (we are talking about the son of lust here) and I think a bit older reader is best for this one (16 and up).

Now onto my project:

I had a wonderful adventure when I went searching for angel statues in the DC area.  I ended up at Oak Hill Cemetery and came across this beautiful statue.  For those that have read the novels you know that Angels play a major role in the books and I loved this one because not only is she a beautiful Angel, she is a beautiful Angel writing a story, or maybe if we are all very lucky she is adding certain names back into the ledgers of Heaven.  One can dream...

This Angel, oh how I wish I could have gotten a better picture but as you may well imagine this cemetery has been around for 167 years, nature and it have slowly become one.  I had to have a photo of this Angel though because of the sword.  This reminded me so much of The Sword of Righteousness that Anna is given.

The National Cathedral in Washington D.C.  When I first started thinking of what pictures I could take to symbolize this book I knew that these had to be one of them.  This church to me represents Anna's Faith.  Her faith in God, her faith in Patty, her father, her friends, and most importantly her faith in Kai.

This is the Backbar of the 9:30 club in D.C.  This was another photo I knew I would have to have for this post.  This is the kind of place I imagine Anna first seeing Kaidan, the night he is playing with his band Lascivious and both of their lives change for ever.  Music is a huge part of who Kai is and to have left this venue out would have disgraced him as a character.

The Grand Canyon, what can I say about the Grand Canyon other than it is now on my top ten list as one of the most romantic places on earth.  This place is so special to Kai and Anna.  It is a place of heart ache and love.

I know you are wondering what the heck!  I am going to tell you, believe it or not these last two photos are the ones that I agonized over the most for weeks.  I could see exactly in my head what I wanted, but as you know what we see in our heads isn't always translated the way we hope in real life.  But, I had to have these two photos even if they aren't perfect because they represent not the book itself but Anna and Kai exclusively.  Through out Sweet Temptation Kai mentions that Anna's scent reminds him of pears and freesia and Anna mentions that Kai smells of Citrus "Oranges mostly.  And a little lime too."

I love that I was given the opportunity to do this because it just brought me even closer to this book, cementing it as a book that will always be a treasured favorite.  I hope that it will become one of your favorites too!

~ HAPPY READING ~

The Sweet Series:

Embrace the Forbidden

What if there were teens whose lives literally depended on being bad influences?

This is the reality for sons and daughters of fallen angels.
Tenderhearted Southern girl Anna Whitt was born with the sixth sense to see and feel emotions of other people. She's aware of a struggle within herself, an inexplicable pull toward danger, but it isn't until she turns sixteen and meets the alluring Kaidan Rowe that she discovers her terrifying heritage and her willpower is put to the test. He's the boy your daddy warned you about. If only someone had warned Anna.

Forced to face her destiny, will Anna embrace her halo or her horns?

Anna Whitt, the daughter of a guardian angel and a demon, promised herself she’d never do the work of her father—polluting souls. She’d been naive to make such a vow. She’d been naive about a lot of things.

Haunted by demon whisperers, Anna does whatever she can to survive, even if it means embracing her dark side and earning an unwanted reputation as her school’s party girl. Her life has never looked more bleak. And all the while there’s Kaidan Rowe, son of the Duke of Lust, plaguing her heart and mind.

When an unexpected lost message from the angels surfaces, Anna finds herself traveling the globe with Kopano, son of Wrath, in an attempt to gain support of fellow Nephilim and give them hope for the first time. It soon becomes clear that whatever freedoms Anna and the rest of the Neph are hoping to win will not be gained without a fight. Until then, Anna and Kaidan must put aside the issues between them, overcome the steamiest of temptations yet, and face the ultimate question: is loving someone worth risking their life?

It’s time.

Evil is running rampant and sweet Anna Whitt is its target. Nobody knows when or how the Dukes will strike, but Anna and her Nephilim allies will do anything necessary to rid the earth of the demons and their oppressive ways.

The stakes are higher than ever, and Anna is determined that the love she feels will be her strength, not a liability. But trying to protect the ones she loves while running for her life and battling demonic forces proves to be perilous—especially as faces are changing and trust is fleeting. When the Duke of Lust sends Anna’s great love, Kaidan Rowe, to work against her, Anna must decide how much she’s prepared to risk.

In the most sensual and fast-paced installment yet, Sweet Reckoning brings all the beloved Neph together one last time to fight for their freedom.
