Book Description:

They say your first kiss should be earned. Mine was stolen by a devil in a masquerade mask under the black Chicago sky. They say the vows you take on your wedding day are sacred. Mine were broken before we left church. They say your heart only beats for one man. Mine split and bled for two rivals who fought for it until the bitter end. I was promised to Angelo Bandini, the heir to one of the most powerful families in the Chicago Outfit. Then taken by Senator Wolfe Keaton, who held my father’s sins over his head to force me into marriage.  They say that all great love stories have a happy ending. I, Francesca Rossi, found myself erasing and rewriting mine until the very last chapter. One kiss. Two men. Three lives. Entwined together. And somewhere between these two men, I had to find my forever.

Excerpt:

“Are you sure you’re on my card?” I turned to the man with a polite yet distant smile. I was still disoriented from the exchange with Angelo when the stranger pulled me against his hard body and pressed a possessive hand lower than socially acceptable on my back, a second from groping my butt. “Answer me,” I hissed. “My bid on your card was the highest,” he replied dryly. “The bids are undisclosed. You don’t know how much other people have paid,” I kept my lips pursed to keep myself from yelling. “I know it’s nowhere near the realm of what this dance is worth.” Un-freaking-believable. We began to waltz around the room as other couples were not only spinning and mingling but also stealing envious glances at us. Naked, raw ogles that told me that whomever the blonde he’d come to the masquerade with was, she wasn’t his wife. And that I might have been all the rage in The Outfit, but the rude man was in high demand, too. I was stiff and cold in his arms, but he didn’t seem to notice—or mind. He knew how to waltz better than most men, but he was technical, and lacked warmth and Angelo’s playfulness. “Nemesis.” He took me by surprise, his rapacious gaze stripping me bare. “Distributing glee and dealing misery. Seems at odds with the submissive girl who entertained Bishop and his horsey wife at the table.” I choked on my own saliva. Did he just call the governor’s wife horsey? And me submissive? I looked away, ignoring the addictive scent of his cologne, and the way his marble body felt against mine. “Nemesis is my spirit animal. She was the one to lure Narcissus to a pool where he saw his own reflection and died of vanity. Pride is a terrible illness.” I flashed him a taunting smirk. “Some of us could use catching it.” He bared his straight white teeth. “Arrogance is a disease. Compassion is the cure. Most gods didn’t like Nemesis, but that’s because she had a backbone.” “Do you?” He arched a dark eyebrow. “Do I…?” I blinked, the courteous grin on my face crumpling. He was even ruder when we were alone. “Have a backbone,” he provided. He stared at me so boldly and intimately, it felt like he breathed fire into my soul. I wanted to step out of his touch and jump into a pool full of ice. “Of course, I do,” I responded, my spine stiffening. “What’s with the manners? Were you raised by wild coyotes?” “Give me an example,” he said, ignoring my quip. I was beginning to draw away from him, but he jerked me back into his arms. The glitzy ballroom distorted into a backdrop, and even though I was starting to notice that the man behind the demi-mask was unusually beautiful, the ugliness of his behavior was the only thing that stood out. I am a warrior and a lady…and a sane person who can deal with this horrid man.“I really like Angelo Bandini.” I dropped my voice, slicing my gaze from his eyes and toward the table where Angelo’s family had been seated. My father was sitting a few seats away, staring at us coldly, surrounded by Made Men who chatted away. “And see, in my family, we have a tradition dating back ten generations. Prior to her wedding, a Rossi bride is to open a wooden chest—carved and made by a witch who lived in my ancestors’ Italian village—and read three notes written to her by the last Rossi girl to marry. It’s kind of a good luck charm mixed with a talisman and a bit of fortunetelling. I stole the chest tonight and opened one of the notes, all so I could rush fate. It said that tonight I was going to be kissed by the love of my life, and well…” I drew my lower lip into my mouth and sucked it, peering under my eyelashes at Angelo’s empty seat. The man stared at me stoically, as though I was a foreign film he couldn’t understand. “I’m going to kiss him tonight.”“That’s your backbone?” “When I have an ambition, I go for it.”
A conceited frown crinkled his mask, as if to say I was a complete and utter moron. I looked him straight in the eye. My father taught me that the best way to deal with men like him was to confront, not run. Because, this man? He’d chase.

Book Description:

Our night of passion was unforgettable.
I'd have loved more time with her, but she was a city girl passing through my lonely mountain village, only here to take photos of our festival.
She had no reason to return. So when she shows up again months later, I'm stunned.
Turns out her job sent her back with some unfinished business. I'd love another taste, but she says she's done with me and plans to leave ASAP. I'm not about to argue...
Until I find out that she's pregnant from our one-night-stand.
And once I know that she's carrying my child inside of her?
I'm never going to let her go.

My Review:

So I am going to admit that I am a little bit torn on this one.  I really liked the whole concept of the story, the suspense and the romance...but somewhere something didn't totally connect with me.  Maybe it was the use of the words Secret Baby in the description, maybe I don't read enough secret baby books to know what constitutes a secret baby, but to me that wasn't a wholly accurate descriptor for this book.  Maybe it was the 'dirty talk' that just didn't hit the mark for me.  For some reason to me especially coming from the heroine Jenna if felt, not forced but not as though it came out of her mouth comfortably even though it was supposed to be.  I think it was in the end just little things that made it harder for me to connect with the story as a whole, that maybe there were too many of those little things going on, a mystery, a secret, not so secret, baby, a dirty talking alpha mountain man who's not totally alpha at all, a professional, single-minded, dirty-ish talking heroine.  I don't know, I am honestly left scratching my head a little.

On the other side though, I have to say that I actually did enjoy the story.  I enjoyed all the separate pieces and wish that there could have been maybe a little more focus on one or the other.  I really enjoyed the suspense side, the who-done-it, though I think part of that is fairly clear from the beginning, but I have to say I was a little shocked by another part of it.  I liked the overall romance of the Hero and Heroine.  I like that they met for one brief passionate night, no qualms, no 'I'm not really that kind of girl', just two adults living their lives the way they want to live them. I liked that it was insta-attaraction but not total insta-love. I loved the Hero's willingness to bend and to be present regardless of the circumstances. that Gil, loves who he is, where he lives, what he does, but it also willing to look outside of his 'box' and see that he can be better with the right woman by his side and that might mean stepping away from that comfort zone and creating a new life, a better life, in a different place and atmosphere.  Jenna is definitely a woman who will be after any female readers heart, she is the kind of woman you would want to be or at least be great friends with.  She's independent, spunky, determined, strong... the list could go on and on.  I loved how she fights for herself and isn't willing to backdown from her own dreams and desires.  The two are a really great couple and (despite my uncomfortableness with the dirty talk from the Heroine) have a really wonderful romance happening between these pages, the steam is all there!

Big Mountain is my first read from Penny Wylder and I will definitely be checking out the rest of her books, because while I am a bit torn on this one there were enough great things that I look forward to seeing what else is out there from her.  My understanding is that this is a longer book for her.  It is not truly novella length but it isn't a full novel length either so it's a fairly quick read when you're looking for a distraction form everyday life!

EXCERPT:

He’s finished heating up the place now, and he crosses to me until his huge frame blocks the doorway I’m standing in. This close, I can feel the heat, but not from the stoves. It comes off his body, radiating from him like the summer sun. I step closer, until we’re chest-to-chest, and I’m gazing up into those bright eyes of his, mesmerized, entranced.
“I can see what you mean,” I admit, my voice softer now than it was back at the bonfire when we fired flirty, suggestive comments back and forth at one another. “I like it here too.”
“Do you now?” His hands are on me again, but touching me lightly this time, teasing. He trails a fingertip up my arm, then back down, leaving a trail of tingles in his wake, the fire stoking inside me to an almost unbearable degree. I feel like another one of his wood stoves. He knows just how to coax the flames in me. “I haven’t even shown you proper Bailey hospitality yet.” From the smirk on his mouth, I can guess what he means.
Still, I ask anyway. “What exactly does that entail?”
“Well.” He bends closer, eyes trapping mine, until his mouth hovers just inches away from my lips. “First, it would involve escorting you to my bedroom. Then…” His gaze breaks away, drips down my neck to my shirt. “I’d have to take off all those clothes of yours.”
A shiver traces its way along my spine. “I see. And then?”
“Then, I’d want you spread-eagled across my bed.” He dips toward me, and I shut my eyes, lips parted in anticipation of a kiss. But he slides right past my mouth, presses his cheek to mine once more, his breath hot on my ear. “After which I’ll be tasting every…” He catches my lobe between his lips, swirls his tongue around my earring, then kisses that soft, tender spot right beneath my ear, where it meets my neck. A spot that always makes me swoon. My knees feel weak under me. “… Inch of you,” he murmurs. His lips kiss down my neck to my collarbone, to the edge just visible under my shirt.
I rock toward him, unable to help myself, my hands drifting up to grip his shoulders for balance. “Mm,” I manage to say, distracted by his lips, his tongue edging along my neck. “And after you’re… satisfied with tasting?” I catch my breath, because he stops kissing my neck then, and draws back and with one finger under my chin, lifts my face toward his.
“I doubt I’d ever be satisfied with you,” he murmurs, a grin on his mouth. “But once I’ve made you come enough times that you can hardly catch your breath?” His eyes light up, because I have to catch my breath again, this time in a breathy little gasp. “Well, then I’ll fuck you, Jenna.” His hands slide down from my waist, caressing my hips on their way to my ass, which he grabs with both hands, hard enough to lift me half an inch off the floor, and pressing my hips against his, where his stiff cock still digs into my belly, harder than a steel rod.
“All. Night. Long.”

Book Description:

Wall Street Journal bestselling author Ilsa Madden-Mills and USA Today bestselling author Tia Louise are back with an all-new romantic comedy filled with Southern sass and steamy scenes that will have you laughing out loud and fanning yourself. Pour the sweet tea and get ready…

“The best way to get over your sh**ty ex-fiancé is to get under a shiny new stud…”
As soon as Mr. Tall, Blond, and Handsome walks into that bar, I know he’s the hook-up I need to get over stupid Cheater Kyle.
A few stolen kisses in a dark hallway, and I’m pretty sure we’re headed for a home run—until he disappears without a trace.
Whatever. Men are all snakes in the grass, and I don’t need a new one anyway.
I resolve to forget about his perfect lips (and chest of steel) and instead focus on turning my Granny’s old beach house into a profitable B&B.
What I don’t expect is for him to show up the next day in my kitchen
You see, my sexy mystery man is none other than Jax Roland, the drop-dead gorgeous home improvement star of The Right Stud, and he’s got an offer I can’t refuse.
With a suitcase in one hand and a hammer in the other, he wants to move in and renovate my old house while he films his new show.
But my roommate has secrets, and they threaten to rip our blossoming friendship—and possible love—apart.
When push comes to shove, is Jax really The Right Stud or is he just another nail in the coffin of love?

My Review:

I had so much fun reading this book, it is eactly what you expect out of a RomCom.  Sweet, funny, sexy, endearing.  Ilsa Madden Mills ad Tia Louise just plain got it right with The Right Stud.

I throughly enjoyed these two main characters, (we'll talk about the secondary characters in just a second) they were tough and yet sensitive and caring at the same time.  They are both out to make their and the people around them worlds better.  I loved their tenacity and dedication to what they want and to their families.  Although at times, I think Ashton tolerated a lot more from her brother than she needed to in all honesty.  It was a little hard to figure out their families from time to time.  Ashton's brothers lack of family ties, Jax's brother in law situation, but regardless in the end it was clear that these two characters would do anything for those that they love and care for.

I loved all their interactions and banter, they were sweet together even when fighting, their steamy levels, a definite hit, ha.  The emotions between these two, all their broken pieces and how they tired to pick each other up and build each other up...it will get you right in the old ticker.  This was a book based around restoring an old beach house but what it really is, is a book about restoring faith in oneself and family, biological or not.  You will fall in love with these two from the first pages and even though all the 'drama' you will be rooting for them and so pleased with their HEA in the end.

The secondary characters for the most part were great.  I adored Ashton's boarder,  Jean Claude Van Ram....really what else is there to say about that.  If nothing else, read it for Jean Claude, haha. I fell in love the filthy mouthed bird and now want one of my own when I turn into that old lady who doesn't care what any one else thinks.  Those three are my 'people' and I adored them.  Ashton's brother, honestly he was an ass, and maybe he came round in the end but I never grew to like him.  Ashton's BFF, hmmmm, that girl has secrets and I don't know how I feel about that.  Now, maybe those two are the way they are because something is coming in the future but if not, they left me not feeling all happy go lucky like everyone else in the book.  Also, Jax's brother in law...what is up with his storyline.  Where is he, (well, I mean we eventually find out but why does it feel like its a secret) why is he there, when is he coming back...what's going on, I am so confused, lol.

And then the last thing that makes this not quite a 5 star for me, even though I really loved it and I think that these two ladies have a great rom-com on their hands because if I could take these few things out it would be perfect, sometimes the behavior of these characters is really juvenile. Don't gt me wrong I wanted them to get back at the cheating ex and his girl toy, but there was no class in the way things were handled at all when they would see them in public.  I would have loved a truly sharp tongue from some one instead of teenage-esque cutdowns.  I needed those two to get their comeuppance but instead I got immature biting remarks and no real resolution.  But I am just a vindictive grumpy lady who likes to see people get what they really deserve so that might just be me, hahaha.

All in all this really was a great read.  It's a quick, fun, sexy, touching book that you absolutely want on your summer reading list.  You'll have a great time reading this poolside with your favorite beverage so make sure you one click this book today!

EXCERPT:

Ashton
Few things in life are as jaw-dropping amazing as Jax Roland emerging from the surf, muscles bulging, water running down the lines of his face, dripping from the ends of his hair… Jean Claude van Ram a rigid brown log in his arms, legs extended.
Okay, that last part I could’ve done without.
It takes less than a minute after he puts that asshole goat on the ground for JC to jump up and head straight for the shrub roses. I don’t even have time to say thank you before I’m charging up the hill after him.
“Oh, no you don’t!”
My overwhelming sadness at the prospect of losing Granny’s house, even my semi-gratitude toward Jax for averting Lulu’s anger over letting her precious goat drown, are forgotten in the race to save my grandmother’s flowers.
In addition to the house, they feel like my final connection to her, the plants she lovingly cultivated every year in her funny hat.
“Did you see that?” Mrs. C meets me at the gate. “He charged down there like Adonis heading into battle. It’s been a while since I’ve felt so stimulated. Reminds me of the time Mr. C talked me into taking a bite of a serrano pepper.”
I don’t have time to correct her Greek mythology or even ask why Mr. C was always taunting her with hot peppers. “Where did that bastard go?”
She jumps back, confused. “Rufus? I put him in his cage. It was time for his nap.”
“Jean Claude! He’ll eat everything!” Pushing past her, I continue running around the house, weighing my concern about Lulu’s anger versus killing that goat with my bare hands.
When I finally make it to the top of the hill, I see him, standing on the porch, his head plunged into the middle of my sweet olive, chomping away.
“Stop, you heartless bastard!” I catch him by the collar and drag him out of the deep-green leaves.
I look around, trying to decide what I’m going to do now. This jerk already chewed through the rope Lulu tied him with.
“Ashton.” The deep male voice pulls my attention to the top of the path.
Jax stands there looking all kinds of sexy with his tee stretched over his broad chest and his wet hair pushed back from his face. In his hand is a silver hook and a thin cable.
“What is that?” I drag the goat to where Jax is standing.
“I had it in the trunk of my car. It’s from a job I was doing. The owners had really big dogs.”
“He can get out of anything. I told Lulu not to bring him here again.”
“Lulu’s your friend?” He comes to where I’m standing and clips the hook through a loop on JC’s collar.
“Possibly ex-best friend.”
“You can’t really tether goats.” He gently extends the silver cable into the yard. From the soaked back pocket of his shorts, he pulls a metal stake. I watch as he loops the other end around it and pushes it into the ground. “How long do you expect to babysit him?”
“She’s got one hour left. Then we’re digging a pit. Roasted goat is delicious.”
The ripple of laughter from Jax’s throat does funny things to my insides...
