About Abbie Roads

Abbie Roads loves Snickers Parfaits and acrylic pour painting. It’s her new obsession. The pour painting. Not the parfaits. Though the parfaits would qualify as an obsession too. She spends her days a mental health counselor always looking on the brightside, but at night she likes to write dark and dangerous things—with kissing and sexy times. She loves reading inspirational quotes and stories about serial killers. She is married to her favorite fellow and they have two cranky old rescue dogs that are not spoiled. Not at all. Okay. Maybe a little. Alright, the dogs are terribly spoiled, but they do give lots of cuddles and kisses in return.

My Review:

I made the mistake of finishing this right before bedtime and not writing down all my thoughts right away.  It was a mistake for two reasons: One, because obviously all my best thoughts come when I am half asleep and now I can't exactly remember them, haha and two, because I had all the dreams, all the crazy, weird, blood soaked, romantic dreams. O.o

I fell in love with Abbie Roads books with her first series Fatal Dreams, those first two books (with hopefully more to come) were a fresh take on paranormal for me.  I saw them as paranormal books with a thriller/suspense twist.  Saving Mercy however I would say is a Thriller/suspense with a paranormal twist.  I can say that I missed there being more of a paranormal aspect because that is what I typically gravitate toward, in general I wouldn't call myself a Thriller/Suspense reader, but I did not miss out on any of what I have come to love about an Abbie Roads book.  All the twists and turns, the darkness, the simmering heat between main characters, and the, how to explain this, the quiet craziness, the sneak attack bomb drop of a moment when every one of the pieces that the entire book has been building to all click together and you see the entire picture.

Saving Mercy is like reading your favorite Criminal Minds episode only the heinous crime's being investigated clutch at your heart even more because the one investigating them...he's the son of one of the most terrifying serial killers out there. I can't say much but let's just say 'That song...you will never get it out of your head again!'  Saving Mercy is very carefully crafted to keep the reader on the edge of their seat and flipping pages.  This is one of those books that you can't put down until you flip the last page because you have to know how this all plays out.  You'll put down the book when you get to the end and have to wonder what the inside of Abbie Roads brain, not to mention her computer history, looks like. There is a subtle deviousness to it all that will make your skin crawl and your mind turning things over and over.

My only two challenges were one,  what I mentioned earlier, that I missed the deeper paranormal aspect.  I felt like neither Cain nor Mercy delved enough into that aspect, but...yes there is a but, while we get an HEA with this couple I get the feeling we aren't done with them which means, perhaps those details will come in later books.  This one was about setting a stage, about finding a truth and bringing people together so I feel like future books will possible bring more of that paranormal in as Cain, Mercy, Mac, and a few others who I won't talk about yet finish following all the trails that were set in this book.  My other challenge was the Insta/not-Insta love.  I know that doesn't make sense, but Mercy and Cain have an immediate attraction, one that kinda niggled at me every now and again because it felt like it would 'flare' up at the most inappropriate times, but yet it isn't completely Insta because the two of them have a shared history that binds them together...not to mention the fact that Cain has been keeping an eye on Mercy for years.

In the end, as bad as it sounds, I love how broken they both were.  How sensitive Cain was and how strong Mercy was.  How their two worlds became what they were because of one man that ruined them both but gave them each other to be able to put the pieces back together.  I loved the chase that Abbie set us on, the driving force of the suspense and the at times convoluted love between two lost and lonely people as well as two other people who spent the last 20 years protecting and guiding them to the best o their ability. I am totally curious to see what happens in the next book after the hints left in this one and let me say again I am not typically a suspense/thriller reader, but I will totally be back for more of this series.  Abbie became a one click author for me after reading her very first books, Race the Darkness and I don't see that ending anytime soon.

Excerpt:

The rain came down gray and thick as a shroud, blurring his vision of the world. He flipped on the wipers and pulled out of the hospital parking lot onto the road. Fat blobs of smacked the windshield loud as marbles being tossed against the glass. Was that hail? As if it mattered. His car was trashed. Cain had covered the passenger seat and all Mac’s blood with a blanket he kept in the trunk. Even though his view of all that crimson was blocked, his mind knew it was there and his eyes kept wandering to the blanket, calling up the image of the dark stickiness coating the seat and the floor. All that blood was playing touchy-feely with his sanity. And he wasn’t in the mood for games. He drove past a gas station, a fast food restaurant, a person walking alongside the road. His foot hit the brake before his brain had a chance to talk him out of it. Mercy. Her hair was slicked to her skull, her clothes—his clothes—were sucked to her body, doing a shitty job of hiding her curves. At least the T-shirt she wore was black, not white. He pulled over to the berm and watched her in the rearview mirror. She stopped walking, stared at the car—knew it was him—but didn’t move. Could he blame her for not wanting to be around him after what he’d said to her? Not really. And yet, he couldn’t leave her alone and walking in the rain with Payne still out there. Not to mention that she didn’t have anyone or anywhere to go. She still hadn’t moved from her spot. He left the car running, opened his door and got out. The rain slapped him—frigid, bordering on icy, soaking his clothes and dripping in his eyes. The pressure of it hitting the wounds in his bicep and shoulder made him wince. But that was all the attention he’d give to the pain. “Get in the car.” The words came out harsher than he’d intended. She crossed her arms in front of her chest, lifted her head, and somehow managed to stare down her nose at him even though she was almost a foot shorter. “No.” She said the word as if it didn’t matter that they were standing in the middle of a downpour. “Get in the goddamned car.” This time the words came out loud and angry sounding. Like that was going to win her over. What was his problem? “Fuck you.” She looked miserable—all wet and shivery and yet feisty and taking none of his crap. He should soften his tone. He should try to be nicer. He should, but his inner asshole seemed attracted to her inner bitch. “Where are you going? No where. You don’t have anywhere to go. You don’t have any money. You don’t have friends.” His voice softened and filled with some emotion he couldn’t name. “You don’t have anyone looking out for you, caring for you, able to help you in a pinch. You got no one.” He sucked in a breath and when he spoke next his voice was soft and pleading. “Except me.” The moment he finished speaking he wanted to retract every goddamned one of those words he’d spoken. “I’m…Shit…” He ran a hand through his soaking hair. “Goddamn it. I’m a dick. Okay?” He softened his tone. “Now will you please get in the car?” Her shoulders straightened, her chin lifted, and she walked forward without looking at him. He expecting her to stomp past the car, but she yanked open the passenger door and got in. Seconds passed where he just stood here, getting even more wet, and staring at the back of her head poking above the headrest. “Now what?” He asked himself. Just what was he going to do with her? Drop her on Dolan? Yes. No. Yes. No. No. No. The last time he tried dropping her on someone she’d almost gotten hurt. If Mac hadn’t been able to keep her safe, he sure as shit wasn’t going to trust Dolan with her. He got back in car. Every inch of him soaked. He brushed his hair back off his face and wiped the water from his eyes. She stared out the passenger window, refusing to look at him. He reached over and touched her shoulder. Underneath his hand, her body tensed, then trembled. Shit. Was he scaring her? He wrenched his hand off her and wanted to use the damned thing to slap himself around a little. Maybe then he’d get it through his stupid brain that she was fucking frightened of him. Too many words flooded his mind and he didn’t know which ones to say. The I’m-sorry ones. The I-won’t-hurt-you ones. The I’m-an-asshole ones. The I-don’t-know-what-to-do ones. She turned to him. Rain slicked her cheeks. Or was that tears? Her beautiful eyes were the color of tropical waters—deep and fathomless. He held up his hands in a show of surrender and she flew across the console at him. He closed his eyes, braced for the blows, but none came. Instead, slender arms wrapped around him, her hair, cold and wet dripped against his chest, but her cheek over his heart was warm—so warm. Maybe he’d had a stroke or something because this felt like she was hugging him. And that couldn’t be. Could it? He opened his eyes and looked down at her. Yep. She was wound tight around the front of him. And suddenly his brain let him feel the total sensation of it. Of being held tight as if he mattered to her. He let his arms fall around her and squeezed, pressing her tighter to him. Damn, this felt good. She felt good. It was oddly comforting to have her clinging on to him so tight. He closed his eyes and memorized the pressure of her arms around him and the way her hands pressed into his back. The way she felt in his arms, the subtle ripple of her spine and ribs underneath his fingers, the way her skin felt warm against his when every other part of him was cold. If he’d been given a Stop Time button. This was the moment he would’ve used it. Here, holding her—the gentle lullaby of rain playing in the background—was the only perfect moment of his entire life.

My Review:

I was so excited for the second book in the Fatal Dreams series after falling head over heels for the series with book one, Race the Darkness.  I was definitely not disappointed, I may have even loved Hunt the Dawn more.

Hunt the Dawn will have you on the edge of your seat the entire read.  One thing that I love about this series is that it's this amazing combination of paranormal and a 'true' suspense/thriller read.  Race the Darkness, book one, left me with my mouth hanging wide open, wondering what I had just read (in a good way, haha) but Hunt the Dawn, it...well, it's this weird amalgamation of a hug and a kick to the gut.  It's going to make you gasp, cry, rage, swoon, melt, and smile.  It's a nail biter and a soothing 'quiet' read all rolled into one.  It's, well it is hard to explain but when you get to the end you will be so happy that you took the time to invest yourself into this world that Abbie has created, into the characters that she will make you love even when you hate them.  I have to sat her villain in this one is this strange enigma of love and hate.  It's clear he is an awful person who does horrific things but I don't hate him, I don't hate him at all and I don't know how I should feel about that to be honest, haha.  I feel many things for him, disgust, sadness, pity, rage...but hate isn't in there and while I know there could never, should never be redemption for him in the very back of my mind, in a small little piece of my brain I kind of wish it for him.  How does a book do that to you?  How does a book take a character so horrific and make you feel anything more than hate.  That is to me what makes Abbie Roads books superb reads, because both of them, Hunt the Dawn more so, will transport you into a world that you could never fathom and put you smack in the middle of it all and make you feel.  You aren't reading from the sidelines watching it all play out.  You become the characters in the book, her writing style is so vivid that the words simply melt in to pictures in your mind and it all plays out like a live action movie and you become the conscious of each character.  Her books are the type of book that when you finish them you gentle close the back cover, take a deep breath and pause to consider everything that just happened but you're still doing that the day after, and the day after that.  Her books stick with you and you find yourself going back again and again because each time you notice a little more than the last time you read it.  It's a book of all these little pieces that build into a monumental tale that takes you away from everything, wrapping you up in that hug I talked about earlier...all while occasionally stepping back to give you a kick to make you gasp.

I loved seeing previous characters, getting a quick look at how Xander and Isleen are doing, wondering even more about Matt and his roll in EVERYTHING.  Meeting Gill and, despite how I think most feel about him, discovering that I REALLY like him and am hoping to see more of him. Discovering all the connections between these two couples.  I imagine it all in my head like an evidence board a detective might use, and that seems quite apropos to be honest, haha.

Now, I am going to give you a HUGE heads up!  This book is dark, this book is fairly graphic, this book is a possible trigger for abuse and rape survivors.  If you have a trigger please be cautious going in.  Most of the incidents revolve around past abuse but there is one particular moment that had me cringing and occurs in 'real time', if there is a reason for me to find that hatred I missed feeling for the villain that moment would be the one to bring it out, of all the things he does, that somehow was the most graphic and vile for me.   If you are concerned about being sure if you should read it or not due to triggers send me a message and we will talk about it so you an make that decision.  I as you can tell loved this book and think it well worth the difficult moments because the story is just that good.  I hope that you'll pick it up and give Hunt the Dawn a go!  You do not have to have read Race the Darkness to read Hunt the Dawn. Characters from the first book do show up in this book but you won't be lost if you haven't read the first one, although as you know I always suggest it.

Exclusive Excerpt:

While he hauled his motorcycle onto the road, he didn’t look away from her. She stood bereft in the middle of the pavement, staring out over the pasture. Emotions infused the air around her. Shame. Hate. Embarrassment. Sadness. Fear. Desperation. He recognized that tangled combination of scents. Knew them intimately. Knew the feeling of being hurt and vulnerable and powerless to stop the pain. Knew how memories, like the one he witnessed, had left wounds on her soul and Junior had just ripped off all the scabs. She was raw, bleeding emotionally in front of him and yet holding it together by a spider’s thread. He could see the effort in the way she stood straight and stiff. Fury simmered low in his gut. After he got her squared away, maybe he’d pay a visit to Junior. Show the asshole what it felt like to be the victim. He walked the bike to her. After he straddled the seat, he held out his hand to her. She grabbed him, her grip hungry. “Climb on up.” She tossed her leg over the seat, using his hand to balance her weight. He sat at the same time she did, her body settling against his back. Holy Jesus. He couldn’t activate the ability to think—his brain short-circuited from her nearness. Everything disappeared but the feeling of her open thighs wrapped around his ass with nothing but a tiny pair of black shorts and his jeans between them. Her sweet musky scent, almost like honey, but better—way better—folded around him like a celestial pair of wings. The scent of her entered his nose, flowed into his lungs, then out to his extremities, spreading a cooling wave of solace that he wanted to savor, but couldn’t. Not with her perched behind him, waiting for him to drive down the road. He placed her hand against his stomach, pressed it tightly to him. His abdominal muscles twitched under her touch. “Hold on.” He let go of her hand and she slid her other arm around his waist. She pressed her front to his back, holding as tightly to his body as she’d held his hand. She was a clingy little thing. Not that he minded. Her touch felt like—what was the word he wanted to use—kismet. Exactly as he’d always imagined a lover’s touch. Two pieces fitting perfectly together. He kicked the machine in gear, trying to ease it forward instead of his normal burst of speed. She rested her head on his spine, nestling her cheek across the fabric of his shirt before settling. His heart grew, straining against his chest wall, threatening to come up his throat in a shout of absolute ecstasy.
