My Review:

If you haven't read one of my reviews of a 1,001 Dark Night Novella before than you don't know how much I love this collection of novellas, if you have, I am sorry for all the gushing I am about to do again, lol.  There is just something about a 1,001 Dark Nights novella that is different from other novellas.  I am not sure what conversations they had with the authors in regards to these books but you can always be guaranteed that you can pick up one of these books, like Razr, number 4 or 11.8 (depending on how you look at it) in a series, and not feel lost at all.  I have read plenty of novellas that have left me scratching my head because I picked it up in the middle of a series, (and you all know how I feel about reading in series order sometimes I simply just fail myself, ha) and couldn't quite grasp what had gone on before.  That isn't something you will get with these books. Yes Razr comes in the middle of a series, yes there are back stories that you will want to read, but no you won't be lost...these books feel more like standalones and that makes them perfect for trying to find yourself a new series to read or of course just keeping up with some of your favorites.

Now, this really isn't about 1.001 Dark Nights, although I LOVE YOU, this is about Razr and how much I loved this newest addition to Larissa's Demonica Underworld series.  Larissa consistently knocks it out of the park with this series. Her characters are fantastic...all a bit broken, her males total alphas, her females badasses.  Her world building is one of my absolute favorites in the Paranormal Romance genre, even the depths of hell are (because hell has layers, like an ogre!) made fantastical when coming through her words.  I love the action, the adventure, the suspense... all of it.  The evil and the good, the truth that the world, even Angels and Demons, is/are not black and white and the moment her characters realize this.  Razr is a beautiful example of this, he's been cast out of heaven for failing to keep his charge and 'power' safe, one of his team members is dead and the other presumed dead, he is essentially the last 'Angel' standing that can right the wrongs made over a century ago.  Too bad that wrong will turn out to be the best failure he could have ever had, but before he knows how good that failure can ultimately be he has to come to terms with either the loss of his future as a Heavenly Angel or the loss of someone he can't seem to let go...Jedda.  Jedda is something Razr has never come across in all his Angelic years, he's pretty sure she's a Demon but she seems pretty clueless about Demon lore and she keeps insisting she's an Elf, but surely since he's never been told that elves exist they don't.  Jedda is a complex character who's life depends on the gemstones that call to her.  Her ultimate survival is tied to one particular gemstone, a long lost gemstone that is now being hunted for by Angels and Demons alike.  I loved these two together, their chemistry, their playful banter.  I loved watching them both discover new worlds together, it felt like I was right there with them.  I have been to the Demonica Underworld (Sheoul-gra)  many times now but each time Larissa gives me a new view of it and the Elven world....I could totally hang out there on vacation.  Picturing trees drooping with leaves of gems, of them rising from the earth surrounded by gemstones the size of elephants.  I know I mentioned this earlier buy Larissa' world building truly is magical.

I am really excited about the introduction/reintroduction of a few characters that I am hoping to see again in the future, particularly the 'Unholy Alliance'  who are going to have me in a fit of laughter I believe, Jim Bob...what's up with you Jim Bob, Leta, and Suzanne and her 'charge'.  I want them all and am going to find it hard to be patient and wait but I know that Larissa will have me nose deep in each book she releases and that thankfully there is more to come.  I am not sure I will ever be ready for this series to end, so no pressure or anything Ms. Ione but keep on keeping on and I'll be here waiting and ready for more!  Long review short, you want this book.  If you are a fan of Larissa's don't skip this because you think it's a novella and isn't going to be important, it is.  If you are a PNR fan but have never read Larissa's books before, grab this one up and check it out, I promise you won't be disappointed and I have no doubt you will have a new series to love!

~ Happy Reading ~

Excerpt:

He moved toward Jedda, his pulse inexplicably growing faster as he neared her. He’d been in the presence of blindingly gorgeous females with unmatched power in his centuries of life, and none of them had affected him like this. No, this was different, a mix of attraction and anticipation he would almost compare to battle lust.

The thought made him slow his approach, his mind tripping over the implications of that. Was he hoping she was one of the demons responsible for the theft of his property and the deaths of his friends, in which case he’d kill her, or was he hoping she wasn’t involved? And which was worse? Oh, he had no problems with killing demons—it was what he’d been bred for. But it seemed like such a shame to slaughter someone so unique. Or so attractive.

Idiot. You never drooled over demons when you were a full-fledged angel.

No, he hadn’t. There had been a clear separation of class and species back then. But ever since he’d had his wings bound and his powers muted and had been tossed in Sheoul-gra to serve Azagoth, he’d relaxed his standards. Not intentionally, but he had to admit that living life on the other side of the tracks had given him new perspective.

He just wasn’t sure if that was a good thing or a bad one.

Jedda looked up as he stopped in front of her. Up close, she was even more beautiful, with full, pouty lips made to stir up some wicked male fantasies. Her fine, perfect features made her seem delicate, fragile, even, but something told him she was stronger than she looked. Which made him wonder how that strength would play in bed.

Down, boy. Get what you want and get back to Heaven and females suited to your status. And species. “Hello, Ms. Brighton. I’m Razr.”

Cocking her head slightly, she gave him a long, assessing once-over before saying with just a hint of an English accent, “Razr? That’s not a common human name, is it?”

Either she couldn’t sense his species or she was testing him. Either way, he didn’t see any reason to lie. “It’s my fallen angel name. A take on my given name. Razriel.”

“Ah.” She gave him another long, measuring look, taking in the expensive suit Azagoth had given him for the event, and he wondered what she was thinking. “Until tonight, I’d never met a fallen angel, and now I’ve met two, including you.”

“Tonight? Is the other one here?”

She nodded. “Shrike, the event organizer. He owns this place.”

Well, that was mildly alarming. Fallen angels reveled in power and status, which meant that this shindig had probably been arranged for a purpose. An evil purpose.

But can the admitted beast-girl of the Wildlands capture her prey without losing her heart in the process?

My Review:

I always enjoy coming back to the world of the Pantera and this time was no different.  In fact I think i can safely say that Kayden and Simon's stories easily became two of my favorite stories in the entire series.  I haven't felt this good about the couples since the first few stories when we were just becoming a part of the world of the Pantera.  Since Raphael and Parish.

After so many stories, we are up to 22 now, even just novellas it is easy to start to get lost in the world being built.  To lose the connection you made when you first began to read the series, to have things start to feel stale and replayed.  That isn't  the case with this release.  I will admit that mid way through the series I started to feel a bit bogged down by it all, never enough to stop reading them though because I truly love this world, but these two stories felt new and refreshing.  Yes, the back story is still there...the Pantera are still fighting against Christopher and his terrible actions against the Pantera, but we only got a small glimpse of that battle in Kayden  and Simon's stories.  These two books revolved almost strictly around the relationship between the two couples and I think it was much like a palate cleaner.  The will leave you feeling satisfied while still wanting more.  They will leave you invested but refreshed.

Something else that I find keeps happening to me more and more as we get deeper into the series is that I want longer stories.  I could have had a full length story about Simon and Tryst and still wanted more I think.  I am particularly in love with their story, I am not at all let down by the story itself but wow, how amazing would it have been if they had 400+ pages instead of 75?  I am all anxious just thinking about it, and anxious in a very good way.

If you are a fan of the Bayou Heat series you will not be disappointed in these two stories!  If you are new...once again the authors and 1,001 Dark Nights pull off a perfect opener to a new world in the middle of its own story.  They give you a beautiful glimpse into something new to you with out spoiling the story for you.  You can safely read this novella with out having read the previous books but you will want to and if you decide you do want to make sure you go back to the beginning.  The Pantera have been on a wild ride for 22 books now, every book has built upon the ones that have come before it, you most definitely want to start at the beginning.  These are great books because you can pick them up anytime you need a quick read and walk away feeling like you got the entire story, perfect for your busy summer days when you just need some downtime.  If you are a fan of shifter books this series is a must read!

~ HAPPY READING ~

I'm not exactly sure when I fell in love with books. Probably on my mother's knee listening to her read Dr. Seuss to me. I do remember that I was barely old enough to cross the street by myself when I discovered the delights of the local library. Could anything be more wonderful than spending summer days surrounded by stacks of Nancy Drew mysteries? Over the years I fell in love with Victoria Holt, Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, and J.R.R. Tolkien just to name a few. I read poetry, essays, biographies, and plays. In fact, I read anything I could get my hands on.

Years later (no, I'm not admitting how many) I'm still an avid reader, and my tastes are still as varied as they were in my youth, which I suppose helps to explain why I enjoy writing regency historicals under the name of Deborah Raleigh, as well as my contemporary paranormals as Alexandra Ivy. For now that is enough to keep me busy, but who knows what the future might hold!

I do have a few other loves in my life besides reading and writing, the most important being my unbelievably patient husband, David, and my two sons, Chance and Alexander. Without their constant support and belief in me, I never could have been able to follow my dreams. They are truly my heroes.

Unlike many of my peers in the writing world, I wasn’t a writer or a reader until I left high school. During my youth I was into theater, song and dance, commercials and boys. I loved romance surely, but I had never read a romance novel until my late teens. With that said, I remember the day I did like it was a moment ago – my aunt gave me the Jude Deveraux novel, Knight in Shining Armor and I couldn’t put it down until the very last word. Then I went straight to the library and got another – then another until I’d read everything she’d ever written. After that, it was McNaught, Howard, Schone, Kleypas, and the Silhouette line, Desire. I instantly loved those emotional, sexy reads, so much so that I began to carve out ideas for my own stories, themes that were unique to me and moved me. In 1997 I enrolled in UCLA extension writing classes, met my mentor and critique partners and since have never stopped writing. I was committed then and I still am now; the need to tell my own romantic stories a full on obsession. My first manuscript was rejected, and though the second one was as well the editor who’d rejected it wanted to see something else from me. I had something (note to authors; always keep working, even after you’ve sent in a proposal) and sent it right away. The day I got the call telling me Desire wanted to buy Cinderella and the Playboy was the best day of my life. That is until I married my husband, and had my two beautiful children. But I must say, writing is much like motherhood – tough, grueling, surprising, delicious and for me, a dream come true.

I was born and raised in Minnesota. It’s where my love of all things green, wet and grown in the ground comes from. As you read above, before writing I was an actor, singer and dancer, specifically a BALLROOM dancer – an instructor and competitor as well. That work took me to many places like New York, Ohio and Wisconsin. I live in Los Angeles now, but I’m always thinking about greener pastures – literally.

Book Description:

Zhubaal, fallen angel assistant to the Grim Reaper, has spent decades searching for the angel he loved and lost nearly a century ago. Not even her death can keep him from trying to find her, not when he knows she’s been given a second chance at life in a new body. But as time passes, he’s losing hope, and he wonders how much longer he can hold to the oath he swore to her so long ago…

As an emim, the wingless offspring of two fallen angels, Vex has always felt like a second-class citizen. But if she manages to secure a deal with the Grim Reaper — by any means necessary — she will have earned her place in the world. The only obstacle in the way of her plan is a sexy hardass called Z, who seems determined to thwart her at every turn. Soon it becomes clear that they have a powerful connection rooted in the past…but can any vow stand the test of time?

    My Review:

You've given up everything you've ever know, everything you ever believed you wanted, You're a Fallen Angel, you fell for love.  Zubaal has spent his life after his fall searching for his one true love, the angel he fell for in all senses, his soul mate.  He's become the right hand man of the Grim Reaper in hopes that he would never miss her soul which he knows was reborn in case she dies, again.  He's spent any free hours he has roaming the world searching, he's kept her in his heart and on his mind and he's kept every vow he ever made to her.

Vex, an Emin the child of two fallen angels, is essentially a soul stealer.  An involuntary, in a sense, soul stealer  As an Emin any time a death occurs near her the soul is sucked into her body.  Vex has turned this undesirable ability into a profitable business and becomes a collector and dealer.  All is going well until suddenly the well of buyers dries up.  In her need to not only earn her living but also get rid of a rather nasty soul that she's unfortunately collected Vex finds herself calling on the Grim Reaper and crosses paths with Z who immediately recognizes that Vex carries the soul of his beloved, Laura.

So, with this being a novella it leaves me not to be able to say too much with out spoiling the story. What I can say besides that I love Larissa's writing style, her story line, her character's development is that I love this couple.  I love that they stay true to who they are even through the toughest situations.  That they fight for their individuality as well as for what will be them as a couple.  That they are generous with their hearts, dedicated to their friends and family, and honorable in their 'missions'.  I love that Z is this pillar, a rock.  He is faithful to a fault, he is the strong quiet type that melts your heart even when you want to smack him over the head for not being more bendable to new ideas, people, thoughts.  Vex is a fun breath of fresh air. She is who she is and no one will guilt her or make her feel as though she is less than.  She will fight to be accepted for herself or even if it is the hardest thing she will ever do she will walk away.  She's a wonderful heroine for that reason because she's not willing to change just to make someone else happy. That isn't to say she can't adapt, but that she isn't willing to loose herself wholly to another person.  I also loved that we got glimpses of a few key characters from past books, particularly a favorite of mine Azagoth and a glimpse at what may be coming in the future with our anonymous angels.

I am a huge fan of Larissa Ione's Demonica Underworld series.  You expect when you get into such a long series (Z is #11.5) that there will be so many players, so many side stories, so many plots and developments that you will end up lost in the mire and needing charts and diagrams to keep up. Larissa however does an amazing job at making each book it's own story while keeping true to the original plot line.  Her characters are straight forward and relatable (even if they are Angels, Fallen Angles, Demons, etc) and her books, while I of course as usual recommend reading in order, can be read individually and you won't be lost if you start here at book 11.5.  This is also a trait of 1,001 Dark Night's novella's that I have found.  The way the authors put these books together for this publisher makes it easy to find a new series through these novellas with out having spoiled any previous books.  If you are a paranormal fan this is a MUST series to read!

~ HAPPY READING ~

EXCERPT:

“What’s your name? And what is your business with Azagoth?” Stepping closer, he lowered his voice and looked down at her from his extra foot of height. “And keep in mind that I’m his gatekeeper. You will tell me or you won’t get off this platform.”

She coyly fingered the plunging neckline of her top and batted her jewel-toned eyes. “I’m Vex, and I have a proposition for your boss.”

“I’m Zhubaal, and I need a little more than that.” He narrowed his eyes, refusing to be charmed or seduced. But damn, she really did have nice breasts. “What kind of proposition?”

For a long moment she stared up at him, her ruby lips pressed together in a stubborn line of silence. Just as he was about to send her back to whatever realm she’d come from, she gave up the seductress BS and held out her right arm.

“See these glyphs?” She traced the outline of one of five squiggly black circles with the tip of one amethyst-painted fingernail. “Touch one.”

“If this is a trick––”

“How stupid do you think I am?” she snapped. “If Azagoth is really the Grim Reaper, he’s one of the most powerful beings in the universe. Do you honestly think I’m here to piss him off by screwing with one of his griminions?”

Well, that was insulting. “I’m not a griminion,” he ground out. “Griminions are ugly little freaks who collect souls when a demon or evil human dies. I’m just your standard everyday minion.”

She rolled her eyes. “I know. I was being funny. You’re the Grim Reaper’s minion. Griminion.” She nudged him with her arm. “Come on. Touch me.”

Anxious to be rid of this obnoxious female, he gripped her wrist and pressed his fingers against two––or maybe three––of the circles.

He had no idea how many of the things he touched because the moment his skin came into contact with them, the powerful burn of sheer evil shot through him and knocked the breath from his lungs. Holy hell, what were those glyphs? Malevolence seared his skin and forced superheated blood to flow like lava through his veins as he released her and stumbled backward, his head spinning.

“They’re souls,” Vex said, her voice cutting through his agony. “That’s what you’re feeling. They attached themselves to me, and I think Azagoth might want to take them off my hands.”

EXCERPT:

Inside Sheoul, the demon realm sometimes called Hell, evil was everywhere.

It dripped off the sides of the sheer rock walls in streaks of black acid that ate into the stone with a hiss. It wafted through the humid air on tendrils of mist that reeked of sulfur and decaying flesh. And, as Vex watched, it oozed like toothpaste from out of a fissure in midair that only people like her could see.

Her purple-tipped black hair, already short and spiky, stood even more on end as the thing squeezing out of the fissure, a dead demon’s soul, popped free of whatever realm and mystical enclosure it had been inside. The toothpastey glob took a transparent, vaguely humanoid shape, but its glowing crimson eyes were sharp and clear. A malevolent wave of rage and hate rolled off the soul, and Vex backed away, even though escape was impossible for her.

She was what her parents had called a daemani, a demon soul magnet, a person to whom souls stuck like glue. According to them, most daemanis couldn’t prevent it from happening, and that was a serious pain in the ass. If a demon died near Vex, not even the Grim Reaper’s personal daemanis, creatures called griminions, had a chance to collect the soul before it got sucked into her and stored as a glyph on her skin.

The demon shrieked, a sound only she or another soul-sensitive person could hear, as it struggled to keep from being sucked into the prison of her body. In a futile attempt to avoid the inevitable, she fled, her booted feet nimbly negotiating the rock shard-strewn ground that was all too common in this part of Sheoul.

But no matter how fast she ran, every time she looked over her shoulder, the distance between her and the soul had decreased. Closer. Closer.

Book Description:

ICE
Cammy, a beautiful, talented Hunter, has always taken her future for granted. She will mate with her best friend Rage and live happily ever after. But her perfect future explodes, quite literally. Rage has chosen another mate, and the Pantera’s enemies have struck at the very heart of the Wildlands. Now she is forced to partner with Ice, the aloof, always mysterious Hunter, to retrieve one of their own. Together they must track down the humans who attacked them, and uncover a secret that threatens the survival of the Pantera.

Can she find a way to work with the gorgeous male who stirs her most primitive emotions? And, more importantly, is a happily-ever-after still possible?

REAUX
Taken from her home when she was only 17 and forced to breed, Karen finally has her freedom back. But the chains of captivity still hold the beautiful human mother close, and when she starts to break down emotionally, she knows she needs help.
Unfortunately the only Healer she wants is the very one she can’t have.

All of his life, Reaux has been labeled a wicked mistake. With his body constantly sending out a sexual musk, he’s irresistible to females. So, the brooding Healer keeps to himself. Until he meets Karen. She needs him desperately. Not for sex, though. Just for healing.

But how can he do the work he’s meant to do, if he’s falling in love with his patient?

My Review:

I always enjoy these novella's from Alexandra Ivy and Laura Wright and these two Ice and Reaux or no exception.  The stories while novella length, we are now into the 20th book in the series, (each novella is considered a book when counting)  create a novel+ length series that will have you anxiously awaiting each new 'book'.

This is a series that you must start from the beginning, every new book builds on past stories...the romantic relationships are different in each one but the underlying story, the story of the Pantera and their enemies is a story that is constantly moving forward and changing with each story.

The thing that I did find different about these two stories is that while I felt that the story was complete, I don't feel like I was let down or missed anything, I wanted more of each of these relationships.  Usually I walk away from the books simply anxious to get my hands on the next one, but with these two couples I want more time with them.  I wanted both of them, in particular Reaux and Karen, to have their own full length novels.

I think one of the reasons when it comes to Reaux's book is that not only did we get a good amount of time with the couple but we also got a lot more time with past characters than we normally do and I wanted more of them as well.  I loved seeing more of the relationship with the community as opposed to just the couple.  There was simply something that felt a bit different about Reaux's story than any of the previous 19 books and even though I can't put an exact finger on it, I liked it.

The action between Pantera and the ever nefarious Christopher and his 'group' is heating up...while the Pantera begin to call home their 'brothers and sisters' for protection they are still sending out 'troops' into the 'human' world to hunt down Christopher's labs, employees, and hopefully one day the elusive Christopher himself.  There is as always that insta-love that comes with Shifters, the fight to understand one another in the relationships with out hurting the other.  There are more twists and turn, more suspense, and anxiousness of what could possibly come next.  I found that in this book there were more heart breaking moments, and yet there were also more powerfully profound and happy moments as well.

I am always thrilled to see how these two authors bring their stories together to make this complex and intriguing story thrive after so many books.  They manage to stick to a formula and yet make each new book and romance a fresh adventure for the reader.  This is a great series for any Paranormal Romance fans.  Each story is novella length so they can be nice quick reads and if you are starting at the beginning you don't have to feel overwhelmed at there being 20 books. I do HIGHLY suggest that if you have not read this series before that you start with book one, Raphael/Parish . This would be a great series to read this weekend if you, like me, are in the path of Snowmageddon 2016...of course it would be a good series to read no matter when, but trust me getting lost in the world of the Pantera is so much better than looking out your snow covered windows...those Pantera will keep you nice and cozy inside your house!

~ HAPPY READING ~

About Alexandra Ivy:
