Sparks fly between a former cop-turned-bartender and his new innkeeper in the first installment of a Montgomery Ink spin-off series from NYT Bestselling Author Carrie Ann Ryan.
Dare Collins is a man who knows his whiskey and women—or at least that’s what he tells himself. When his family decides to hire on a new innkeeper for the inn above his bar and restaurant, he’s more than reluctant. Especially when he meets the new hire. But he’ll soon find that he has no choice but to work with this city girl and accept her new ideas and the burning attraction between them.
Kenzie Owens left her old life and an abusive relationship behind her—or so she thought. She figures she’ll be safe in Whiskey, Pennsylvania but after one look at her new boss, Dare Collins, she might still be in danger, or at least her heart. And when her past catches up with her despite her attempts to avoid it, it’s more than her heart on the line. This time, it might mean her life.

Once again, Kenzie had no idea if she was making the smartest of moves, but she wasn’t about to back down now. Though it was September, the weather fluctuated between stifling humid and hot to downright chilly. Right now, it was a pleasant day where she didn’t feel like she was walking through a wall of humidity, nor did she need a jacket. Between that and the bright sun and tiny dots of clouds above her, it was a pretty nice afternoon.
“This is the main drag for the town.” Dare gestured at the street. “It’s pretty much a straight line except for one part where it curves over the bridge. The creek below that only starts pumping real good after a storm or right when the run-off from the mountains begins to melt. Other than that, it’s a decent trickle that tourists like for selfies.”
As Kenzie herself had taken a selfie in front of the creek for her personal album of memories, she ignored the humor in his voice at the comment. She’d told herself she would start taking more photos and enjoy where she was and who she was now that she was free of everything that had held her back for so long.
“It’s a beautiful town,” she said simply, and she was being honest about that. Everyone took great care of their buildings and businesses. There were coffee shops, teahouses, bakeries, restaurants, antique shops, clothing stores, and a couple dozen other shops that catered to practically every need. Everything was unique and could only be found in Whiskey.
And now, she was part of it.
“It’s home.” Apparently, Dare wasn’t a man of many words today.
They walked another block in easy silence, and Kenzie sighed. She hated feeling awkward.
“So, have you always lived here?”
He looked down at her and studied her face as they waited at the crosswalk. “No. I lived in Philly for a few years.”
“Big city,” she said dryly then immediately regretted it. Weren’t they supposed to be friends now? Or at least friendly?
He snorted before stuffing his hands into his pockets. She couldn’t help but notice the way his forearms tightened at the movement. She shouldn’t be noticing the man’s arms, damn it. Nor should she think forearms were sexy.
She’d come to Whiskey for herself, and had sworn off men and relationships. That meant no more looking at Dare Collins’ arms and the way he filled out his jeans.
“Sorry about that. Like I said, I had a rough night and took it out on you.”
“You already apologized. Let’s get back to the bar. I know you have to work, and I have paperwork to go over.”
His jaw tightened as he studied her. “Starting already?”
She raised her chin and then cursed herself for doing so yet again in front of this man. He set her on edge, and she wasn’t sure if it was because they kept bumping heads or because she found him attractive when she didn’t want to.
“I’m here to help your parents, Dare, and to do a job.”
“I know you are.” He turned away from her, giving her his profile. “And I’m glad my parents are taking a step back to actually try and relax. I’m just not a fan of change. Hell, I hate it, and I hate surprises even more.”
That, she could totally understand. “I hate surprises, too. As for change? Well, sometimes, change is good.” She was living proof of that, wasn’t she?
“That’s true enough, but it doesn’t mean I’m quick to like it.” He stared at her, and she blinked at the intensity. There was something there, she thought, some heat she couldn’t quite name, and it worried her. Was he attracted to her? Or was that flare because she represented that change he wasn’t ready for?
Either way, it didn’t matter; thinking too hard along those lines when it came to Dare wasn’t something she could do.
“But I guess it doesn’t matter, does it?” Dare continued. “As for your new job? I’ll be around if you need help. I don’t know everything about the inn since I have my own two business to handle, but I can probably at least point you in the right direction. And if you’re looking for upgrades like you mentioned? Talk to Loch. I know he’s family, but he’s damn good at handyman work and carpentry when he puts his mind to it. He hasn’t done much on the inn since our parents weren’t ready to update yet, but Loch’s good at what he does.”
Surprised, she found herself nodding. She’d already heard from her new employers about Loch and how he could help, and she was glad to know that the family stood together no matter what. “I’ll keep that in mind.”
“You do that, Red.”
She rolled her eyes. “My name’s Kenzie.”
“I know. I like Red too, though. Plus, it’s fun to see you get all rattled when I call you that.”
And she found this man attractive? She was seriously losing it. It must just be the nonexistent heat talking. Once she was fully immersed in her new job and life, she wouldn’t be thinking about Dare and those sexy forearms of his again.
At least, she hoped.

My Review:
Another sweet, sweet read from Carrie Ann Ryan. I knew that Fox was going to be an amazing characters. He's not the outward brooder that his brothers are and he doesn't keep his feelings in quite the same but he is still very much a quiet sort that needs time to process his life before he makes decisions. That for me was both a good and a bad thing, especially since it seems Melody is a bit of the same way, but I digress, I still adored him. He is a perfect Carrie Ann Ryan hero, loving, sweet, a bit emo, total protector; everything I have come top love about her characters.
Melody stole a piece of my heart. I really connected to her in a lot of ways. She is a dancer who had to stop dancing do to injuries and now finds herself in a position of trying to rediscover who she is. When you are a dancer, not having that as your identity anymore is something hard to come to terms with. A dancer spends their entire lives becoming that and to have it taken away before you are ready can be devastating emotionally. She is also a person who carries the world on her shoulders and takes too much responsibility into her hands. She may even know that situations were completely out of her control but still can't take some part of it on herself. I loved how Carrie wrote her, how honest she was with Melody's feelings, her fears, her excitement, her joy, her love. She really came alive on the pages for me and I could easily place myself in her shoes and that makes for a wonderful character and read.
Together Fox and Melody are a beautiful couple. I loved how they never forgot one another, how they never truly give up on one another, how they work through things as adults and without a tremendous amount of drama. Also, their 'private' moments, woah! It's always the quiet ones ladies, haha. The one thing that brings this down to a four star for me was just the amount of 'we're gonna talk', but then we kissed and now I can't be here with you are we might do more and never talk, thought I know how much we REALLY need to talk, but I have to leave so I don't ruin this and we can talk...later. It took a long time for these two to finally have their conversation and considering the importance of what they needed to talk about that threw me off a little. It's not an overly major thing and probably won't bother any other reader, honestly it doesn't ultimately change my feeling about the book, I think it is a great read, it just made me want to skip parts and I hate that. I also got a little irritated with Melody for brushing off so many things as a 'prank' or someone confused. I adore that Carrie always gives us a little mystery, there is always some suspense and action with these stories but at the same time I just wanted Melody to say a bit sooner, 'you know what', maybe, just maybe, there is something to all these instances that keep happening. It's great build up, but at the same time I have to think would anyone really just say to themselves, 'hey this weird stuff has happened three times now, but it's probably nothing, lol.
Overall though, I throughly enjoyed this book, as I do all of Carrie Ann Ryan's books. You can feel all the love and soul she puts into each one, it comes though in every look, every caress, every sigh. She creates families that you want to be a part of. Families that you care for as much as they care for each other. Having a rough time, read a Carrie Ann Ryan book, need a break from the real world, immerse yourself in one of her worlds, just need a perfect read to leave you happy and content, Carrie Ann Ryan is your writer. She never fails to move my heart and have me sighing in contentment as I close the last page. I am overly excited to get my hands on Loch and Ainsley's book. I think maybe this one will be a little bit more tense and drama filled than the past two books ( at least when it comes to the relationship) and honestly those kinda books always make me so anxious I can barely get through them but I can not wait to go on Loch and Ainsley's journey with them. It is going to be a wonderful way to wrap up this series.
~ HAPPY READING ~

WHISKEY REVEALS:
By the time the cable box lay forgotten on the coffee table, wires and empty cups of tea next to it, two hours had passed, and Fox was ready to throw the damn thing across the room.
“It’s haunted. That’s the only thing I can think of.” Melody sat next to him, the heat of her thigh pressed into his. His cock was beyond ready, and he had a feeling he was just going to have to get used to a perpetual state of hardness from now on.
“I cannot believe we tried fourteen things, finally got the place on the phone, and it’s still not working.” He’d lost any cred he might have had with being able to fix things. And all because of a damn cable box.
“I hate it. They may be sending a new one— which they wanted to charge us to install. At least between us, I think we convinced them to do it for free— but they still wouldn’t tell us if we lost the DVR settings or not. Grandma isn’t going to be happy.”
Fox reached out and squeezed her hand. “We’ll figure it out.”
He liked saying that. We. As if it were the two of them.
Friends, he reminded himself. They were friends.
“Thanks for everything, Fox. I guess this isn’t how you wanted to spend your day.”
“It’s what friends do. And I had fun, even when we were yelling at the damn thing. I should go, though, since I bet you have work to do, and I promised myself I’d get my yard looking somewhat decent.”
They both stood up as she smiled, and he had to do his best not to reach out and touch her. It wasn’t easy, but he was stronger than the temptation. Maybe.
“I owe you one,” she said softly as they walked to the front door. “Seriously.” “I’ll put you to work doing yard work if you want.”
She laughed again, and he took it in, the sound soothing his soul. “I don’t know if I owe you that much.”
They paused in the foyer, their gazes meeting, and a heated silence stretching between them.
“This doesn’t count as the owing,” he whispered then kissed her, knowing it was a bad idea.
He crushed his mouth to hers, her gasp lost in the kiss. Soon, her back was against the wall, his hands on her face as he deepened the kiss. He didn’t touch her anywhere else, and their bodies remained a breath apart, but they were close enough that he could feel her heat.
She tasted sweet and sinful and everything he ached for.
When he pulled away, their bodies shook, and he forced himself not to kiss her again.
“That was…” she whispered.
“A mistake,” he finished, not missing the hurt in her eyes. “I’m sorry. I know we’re trying to be friends.”
“And kissing complicates things.”

My Review:
What happens when former police officer and now bar owner, Dare Collins gets blind sided by his parents, he gets blindsided by the woman destined to steal his heart. Kenzie Owens is on the run from her old life, one she couldn't be happier to never look upon again. In an attempt to escape an abusive past she takes on a job managing a family hotel in Whiskey, PA. Little does she know that she's walking into a tense family situation. Dare can't believe it when Kenzie walks through the door. This woman that set his body burning when he saw her in his bar the night before is also the woman that is going to turn his business and world upside down, his body and his mind are at complete odds
This is another great book form Carrie Ann Ryan and I am really excited about the way that this series started. I loved the attraction these two characters had for each other, it was a love/hate type of situation. A little instalove and a whole lot of not wanting the instalove.
If you loved Montgomery Ink, you will love Whiskey and Lies, not only did we meet the three brothers this series will revolve around in Montgomery Ink but it has the same strong family ties that make you want to walk out the door and go join a new (kidding, but not really) family. There is also the suspense twist that we have come to expect with Montgomery Ink that I love so much. That suspense heightens all the emotions but doesn't over take the main point of the story, finding the love of 'your' life.
These Collin's boys are going to have you hooked from page one if you weren't hooked already from your early introduction to them. While this is a bit of a spin-off from Montgomery Ink you in no way need to have read that series to start this one, but you are going to want to anyway so go on and get that one click finger ready. I found Whiskey Secrets to be a fast paced, well developed story that had me completely engrossed and I am so ready for the next brother...bring them on!
