Aware of the crackling in the air the moment he stepped through the entrance, she snapped her spine straight and emitted a tiny gasp. This was not the dead weight she’d imagined. He moved slowly. Purposefully. As if he calculated every footstep. His eyes remained obscured by the shadowy light of the barn, making them impossible to read even as he stood right in front of her. She swallowed, her suddenly dry tongue sticking to the roof of her mouth. Whoever this man was, he was anything but innocuous. Dad shook hands with the stranger, and then stepped back and turned to her. “This is John Rathborne. John, I’d like you to meet my daughter, Katie.” “Pleased to meet you, Miss Locke.” His voice was rough but warm, setting off a wave of heat within her belly. He sized her up, his dark gaze lingering curiously on her face. She lifted her jaw and adjusted her sunglasses, making sure they continued to hide her left eye. The man was broad-shouldered and tall. His close-cropped hair was speckled with gray, but he had the body of a man in his prime. Her cheeks heated, and she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “Katie’s been working on the ranch her whole life,” Dad continued. “Even during college and nursing school. She even got the head nurse to adjust  rounds so she could help during the cattle drive. But things didn't—work out. Now she’s back here full time.” “I’m sure I’ll be able to learn a lot from her,” John said. A faint beeping sound cut him off before he could say more. Dad craned his neck toward the house. “What’s that?” Her eyes widened. “Oh, my gosh. The banana bread! It’s burning!” “Oh, I should’ve known.” Dad simpered. “Happens every time. I’ll take care of it. Why don’t you two take a moment to get to know each other?” He looked at her and quirked his left brow, warning her to be nice. “I’ll be right back.” She shoved her hands into her jacket pockets and looked around the barn—at anything except the man in front of her. But her eyes fell back to his muscled arms. An electrical zing coursed through her body. Her teeth sank into the plump skin of her bottom lip, attempting to fight off the faint tingling sensation occurring between her legs.  “Katie, is it?” He extended his hand. “It’s nice to meet you.” She reluctantly accepted it. His skin was rough and calloused, yet at the same time his grip was gentle. She fought the urge to relax into the touch. He looked down at her with a polite smile that didn’t reach his eyes—blue eyes, looking out from a face creased with concern. Her breath caught, and every muscle in her body tightened. She’d seen this man before.

My Review:

Another great addition to this new series. After meeting the 5 members that make up the Ares Security team in Kill Without Mercy I was more than ready to see where Lucas St. Clair's story was going to lead us.

Lucas St. Clair is the estranged son of a wealthy southern political family. He's carried the weight of his families expectations and his separate desires on his shoulders his entire life, he's given up the only thing he's loved because of his family but now she's in danger and he can't stay away.

Mia has no idea what danger lurks around the corners in her home town. She's spent the last 15 years quietly building her life and trying to rebuild her heart after having it crushed by Lucas St. Clair. Now he's back telling her she's in danger and demanding to be the one to protect her but her heart will be what needs protecting the most in the end. Can they both let go of the past and create a new future or is there too much history and hurt between them and will it get her killed?

Kill Without Shame is a second chance love story that will have you wanting to smack a couple of people upside the heads and rooting for them all at the same time. I am a sucker for second chance romances and this is one of the better ones out there lately. Lucas walked away for valid although frustrating reasons but he never truly left Mia's side. Mia, while she may have been broken she never gave up. I love that through her hurt she found herself and refuses now to be any thing other than who she was always meant to be. I also loved that the person she is now is the one that Lucas always wanted. I know that may sound a little confusing but trust me it will make perfect sense when you read it and it will be an integral part to the story. Mia was always meant to be a strong independent woman and when she was given the chance she took it and ran with it.

I appreciated greatly that Lucas while having alpha male tendencies recognizes Mia's need, willingness, and ability to help. He may not like it but he learns to accept that she won't be pushed aside and hovered over either because he feels the need to protect her or because he wants to coddle her.

One of the things I most enjoy about this series is the ties that bind the 5 men of Ares. I ache for what they went through to bring them together but I love what became of it. I love that through trial they have become a family and will stand with each other through anything . I love that these guys all have that Veteran Male Alpha-ness about them but not once have any of them come across as too strong to accept or desire help and love either through a friendship with their other 'brothers' on the team or through the romantic relationship for each individual. These are strong male characters but they aren't afraid to feel.

I am also a huge fan of the fact that each book while having a thread that ties it to the past one and future ones is it's own story. The story of the relationship is the main focus and if you decided to pick up book two with out having read the first book you won't be completely and utterly lost. We do get a good look at more of what will be coming for Hauk. I am so curious about how his story is going to play out since we have seen little pieces building in these first two books. It isn't enough to make you feel like you have to read them in order but it is enough to get your curiosity moving on high and anxious for more. There are 5 guys in all at Ares so unless something changes over the next few books I think we have at least 3 more books to go and I can't wait to get my hands on each of them.

If you are a fan of Military based Contemporary Romances with a bit of suspense these are great reads and I highly suggest giving them a try!

I'm not exactly sure when I fell in love with books. Probably on my mother's knee listening to her read Dr. Seuss to me. I do remember that I was barely old enough to cross the street by myself when I discovered the delights of the local library. Could anything be more wonderful than spending summer days surrounded by stacks of Nancy Drew mysteries? Over the years I fell in love with Victoria Holt, Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, and J.R.R. Tolkien just to name a few. I read poetry, essays, biographies, and plays. In fact, I read anything I could get my hands on.

Years later (no, I'm not admitting how many) I'm still an avid reader, and my tastes are still as varied as they were in my youth, which I suppose helps to explain why I enjoy writing regency historicals under the name of Deborah Raleigh, as well as my contemporary paranormals as Alexandra Ivy. For now that is enough to keep me busy, but who knows what the future might hold!

I do have a few other loves in my life besides reading and writing, the most important being my unbelievably patient husband, David, and my two sons, Chance and Alexander. Without their constant support and belief in me, I never could have been able to follow my dreams. They are truly my heroes.

My Review:

When this book came to my attention I went immediately to read the synopsis and thought "Military based paranormal romance, HECK YEAH!"  I went back to the first book Releasing the Demons wanting to make sure I knew what was going on before I began this book and immediately fell into a book coma.  I will say that you MUST read this series in order.  Had I not gone back to book one I would have been quite lost on some aspects of the story.  The base of the story is clearly set up in book one but it is not really recapped in book two.  This is something I both appreciated and hated.  I loved that I wasn't inundated with things I already know having read the first book but at the same time thinking if I had picked this book up as a standalone (yes, it clearly is not) I would have likely put it back down because I would have not understood the system of The Senary or the backstory of the hybrids.  

Black Bullet is an action packed.  It's a dystopian-esque world where insane vampires have taken over the night but are working to take over everything and the only thing stopping them is the Men and Women of The Senary and at least for now one amazing but broken female hybrid.  L.D. Rose takes no punches when starting Jon and Lawan's story; it starts off at a fast clip with a flash back that will have you clutching tightly to your book and flipping pages quickly and she practically never slows down.  There is so much that happens in this story that you are constantly engaged and sitting on the edge of your seat.  I will say that this book is not easy to read at times.  It has many dark moments, particularly when it comes to Lawan.  her journey is one of brutality and heartache but you can truly only love her more for it.  I will mention here that if you have triggers due to abuse or rape take a deep DEEP breath before going in.  The story is worth the heartache but again it can be hard to process at times.  Jon...well, he becomes something extra special in this book.  He's fighting against his past and his beliefs, he's trying to come to terms with his new reality, a reality he never truly wanted.  He and Lawan are the perfect pair because he can understand her pain, he can hold her close and soothe her, he can see that she is fragile but he can also recognize her unbelievable strength.  And Lawan, she is Jon's hope.  Through her he can see a future that does not take away his past but enhances who he will become.  I loved their relationship.  I loved that it wasn't an insta-love, that it was built upon slowly and through hard fought battles between themselves and the ones they fought against others.  I loved that even through all their darkness there was underlying humor.  I loved that despite how hard they had to be because of the world around them that they were soft (even when they had to be hard) with each other and with their friends.  They are a well matched and believable couple, I never felt like I had to force myself to understand or believe in their relationship because L.D. Rose made it real and honest.  

You will love the friendships and even the villains.  I mean you will hate the villains, there is one that is so particularly vile that he makes your skin crawl, but you will love the raw ugliness of them and the honest angry hate that they will cause in you.  L.D. holds no punches, her bad guys are some of the worst I have ever read but the story wouldn't be anywhere near as effective with out them.  This series is hard to the core and I am thankful for that, there is an edge that captivates and has you coming back for more.  Oh and side note: You will LOVE Oscar, the cat!  

Black Bullet is a gritty dark read if you are fans of The Black Dagger Brotherhood, Dark Hunters, Guild Hunter...Dark Romance, even I would say Horror you will enjoy this series.  I am quite excited about future books and have a good idea of who I would love to see next. I am not sure how long L.D. Rose plans to make this series but it could easily be long running if she chose and I would totally be down with that.
