Excerpt:

He smiles, small and knowing, almost sympathetic for her sudden nervousness. He waits long enough for her to notice his lips, then says, “You tell him Seth Morgan is here to see him. I promise he'll respond.”
Then he pulls back, and smooths his gray suit coat. For good measure, he flashes a darker smirk at her. She flushes, even through her make up, and all but scrambles for her phone. In moments, she's speaking into the receiver in a tone so hushed Seth can't quite make out what she says. He doesn't need to know, or tells himself he doesn't as he forces himself not to do a quick survey of his surroundings. He can't afford to look as nervous as he is, so he keeps his eyes on the receptionist, which makes her fidget. At length, she hangs up and says, “Mr. Oliver will see you now. The elevator is through that door over there, and his office is on the third floor.”
A real smile claims Seth's lips, and he nods. “Thanks so much,” he says with a wink. She releases a tiny gasp as he turns away toward the elevator.
He spends the ride to the third floor forcing himself to be absolutely still, so that when he steps off the elevator, and comes face-to-face with security, he doesn't even flinch. He gives the two beefsteaks a cordial nod, and stops.
One of the guards says, “Excuse me sir, we're gonna need to see the contents of your pocket, and run a wand on you.”
“Of course,” he says with a hint of smile. He shows them his wallet, keys, and phone, and lifts his arm so they can run the handheld metal detector over him. They seem almost wary when the thing doesn't make a sound.
“Have a good day, sir,” says the guard, and Seth straightens his jacket as he passes them by. He won't let himself think on the few steps to the office door, and instead feels himself slip into instinct. The situation is not so unfamiliar, just the force with which he's dealing. The door handle is so cold when he turns it.
The office is expectedly huge, done in dark hardwood, and hosting not only Remi's big desk, but a couch, love seat, and coffee table. In-set bookshelves make up the wall behind the desk, and a minibar sits close to the floor-to-ceiling windows. Remi is sitting behind his desk, with a phone crooked between his face and shoulder when Seth enters, and Oliver is setting aside some papers into his briefcase. “I'm sorry for the short notice,” says Remi, pointedly watching Seth cross the space to stand in front of him. He says, “Yes, it's unavoidable. Yes, goodbye.”
Remi stands quickly, but for a long time, they only stare at each other. Seth is careful to make no sudden movements with his hands that could be misunderstood. He chooses to focus on that, rather than the searing rage that surges through him at the sight of his dead lover's father; also the foreign king who was in on the plot to usurp Seth and his brother. The look on Remi's face isn't quite surprise, but it's certainly one of quick calculation. Seth must keep in mind that though Remi is a mystery to him, Remi is also the enemy who knows him best – the old him. And so he can't let himself be that child. The Seth Morgan who watched most of his immediate family take bullets that killed them, the one who delivered some of those bullets himself—— Remi doesn't know that Seth at all. With the grace of saints he can't believe in, he reaches an open hand to his enemy.
Several seconds later, Remi accepts the gesture, shakes Seth's hand with a steady grip. Not too hard, Seth notes. He says, “I'm here to ask for a momentary ceasefire. I come to you unarmed. Will you talk to me?”
Remi's eyes are so dark as he searches Seth's face for any twitch of expression. Finding none, Remi's shoulders ease the slightest bit, and he says, “I will do that for you. Have a seat, Seth.”
The clattering in Seth's chest quiets a fraction, and he unbuttons his jacket as he sits. Remi strolls to the minibar, no doubt vying for time and presence. Seth follows his progress with his eyes. Remi asks, “Would you like some scotch?”
Caleb's favorite. Seth doesn't allow the wince he feels. He says, “No, thank you.”

About Black Collar Queen:
Claiming the Morgan Syndicate was supposed to be the hardest part—but now they have to keep it. Seth Morgan has taken his place as the head of the Morgan syndicate, with his cousin Emma by his side. But the change of regime came at a heavy price: Emma’s mother is missing, and the Oliver syndicate wants Emma’s head on a platter. And there are secrets—skeletons from their parents coming to haunt them. Seth is moving pieces, struggling to keep Emma safe and peace in the city while Emma alienates her lover and grapples with her past. With threats on every side, and unable to trust their allies, Emma makes a misstep that could cost more than the syndicate is willing to pay: the life of it’s young queen.

Fighting for Keeps- Review

Author: Seletste Delaney
Publication Date: April 21, 2015
Publisher: Entangled: Ignite
Series: Agents of TRAIT, book 3
Genre: Romance Suspense
Age Recommendation: 18 and up
Rating: 4 stars

Book Description:

He made her crazy. In every way imaginable...

Since her partner's death, Jodi Israel has been perfectly happy playing Q to everyone else's Bond. Electronics and machines are safer - and they are a lot easier to deal with. Unfortunately, she's stuck with TRAIT's newest recruit, an infuriating, arrogant alpha-male who plays by his own rules...and is hot enough to send electric voltage through all of Jodi's circuitry.

Finn Danby heeds his instincts, even though it's cost him his job on more than one occasion. The moment he sees Jodi's fiery hair and uncanny engineering abilities, Finn's instinct takes over...and it's all libido. Now they're working together to protect the unstable daughter of a high-profile politician - and the sparks are flying. Both in and out of the bedroom. But when all hell breaks loose, Jodi and Finn just may find themselves alone…and unemployed.

My Review:

After the death of her chauvinistic partner Jodi has hidden herself away in TRAITs garage, not wanting to team up with another partner, not wanting to chance going out on field assignments and loosing her partner again.  Then on a fateful day she runs into brash and stubborn Finn Danby.

I loved these two together, their banter and chemistry was fun to read.  The one thing I had trouble with was seeing Finn as this total jerk that Jodi sees.  I loved Jodi's fire, she's feisty, bold, and just as stubborn as Finn but, she's also scared, unsure, jaded, and a bit prejudice in the case of Finn.  I feel like for a long time she doesn't ever even give him a chance.  A lot of that comes from dealing with her last partner and his attitude toward women so I get it...doesn't mean I didn't want to smack her on the back of the head a time or two, haha.

Finn, thank goodness for a girl like Jodi who can take his ego (not chauvinism (like her last partner), I never got that from him) and keep him grounded.  He's been through a lot of the the years and carries a lot of physical and mental scares but he's honed who he is and he is not afraid to be that person even when it goes against the system.  Thankfully Jodi reigns him in and together they learn how to be a team.

The one thing I would have liked is maybe for the two characters to have had more time to develop on their own as well as a couple.  The author created these multi-layered characters that I would have really enjoyed digging into and learning more about so my only real complaint is that I didn't have enough time with these two.  I felt like their storyline could have been a series all on its own.  Don't get me wrong we get the completion needed to feel good about the book and where the two of them have gone, I just would have loved to have MORE.  Especially when it comes to the plot of the story...wow, the places the author could go with this.  It's almost a bit of 007 and X-men (although I would not call this a paranormal) mixed together.  I am hopeful this plot line will continue through the series so we can understand it fully.

This is the third book in the series and to be honest I didn't even realize that until I got to the end.  You guys know how I feel about reading books out of order in a series, but this book truly is one that can be considered a stand alone with in a series.  I will definitely be going back to read the first two books, but I like that I never really felt like I was missing something like I often do if I jump into the middle of a series.  If you like suspense, action, military, romantic books you will enjoy this story.  It is a fast paced read and great for when you're having a book hangover and need a fun read to pull you through!

At a young age, Seleste deLaney discovered the trick to not being afraid of the monsters under the bed was to turn them into heroes. Since that time, she’s seen enough of human monsters that she prefers to escape to fictional worlds where even the worst demons have to play by the rules and the good guys might end up battered and bruised (or dead), but they always win. And really, isn’t that the way it should be?

She resides in the Detroit area with all her favorite monsters (nice ones—some are furry and the others call her Mom) and is hard at work on her next book. In those rare moments when she isn’t battling terrorists, vampires, or rogue clockworks, she can be found all over the internet, where she loves to interact with readers

The Consequences of Loving Colton - Release Day Launch

It’s all fun and games…until someone’s heart is broken.

They’re not kids anymore, but Milo Caro is certain that Colton Mathews will only see her as his best friend’s little sister for the rest of their lives. After all, he made that clear the night before she left for college. But four years later, her brother is getting married and Colt’s the best man—and guess who is the best man’s last-minute date?

Milo vows to use the wedding to either claim the smoldering firefighter’s heart or douse this torch for good. When Max—her best friend from college, who may be carrying a torch of his own—crashes the party, they devise a plan to make Colt see what he’s missing. But after Colt catches on, he decides to cook up his own revenge.

Now it’s personal. Colt and Milo are at war, and between Max’s questionable acting methods, an unfortunate trip to jail, and a maniacal fiancée, what could possibly go right?

“What the hell is wrong with you?” Max gave me a tender shove. “We were fine until you started stepping on my foot and elbowing me!”
“You were hitting on my mom!”
“She’s a beautiful lady!” he argued.
“Oh, my gosh.” I fell into one of the chairs and moaned. “This is a catastrophe.”
“Not true.” Max shook his head. “You just have to be more believable. I mean, would it kill you to find me screw-worthy?”
“Screw-worthy? What does that even mean?”
“That’s it.” Max grabbed my hand and pulled me down the hall. “Where’s the bathroom?”
“Uh . . .” I pointed.
With a jerk he had me in the bathroom under the stairs and closed the door. Words and sounds were coming out of his mouth but I couldn’t make anything out. Max pushed me against the door and pointed his finger in my face. “I’m going to kiss you, damn it, and you’re going to like it. And I’m going to take off my shirt and you’re going to manhandle me, and you’re going to stop being so damn nervous or so help me God I’m going to bend you over that sofa in the living room and spank your sexy ass.”
Shocked, I was paralyzed in place. “Where did that come from?”
“Inside.” Max looked at me and smirked. “I have lots of feelings and I’m sick and tired of you looking at me like I don’t have a penis. I may be used to your innocence but for my own pride at least try to be attracted to me. Now close your damn eyes.”
“Stop cursing at me.”
“Stop being difficult! I’m trying to help you. And stop squirming. Shit, take a Xanax or something.”
“Max.” I closed my eyes and huffed. “This isn’t going to—”
My hand was on something hard.
I blinked my eyes open.
Since when did he have a six-pack?
I tilted my head, you know, to get a better look. His skin was really smooth but bumpy, each muscle defined so much that there was enough of a ridge for my hands to play with.
“Oh, look, he’s a man after all,” Max said, sounding bored. “I’m not your sexless friend. I’m not your damn brother. I’m not your gay friend. And I sure as hell am not thinking about anything right now except that your hands feel really good against my skin. So I’m going to kiss you, and you’re going to respond like the idea of my mouth on yours doesn’t make you want to cry—and you’ll like it.”
“I’ll like it,” I repeated.
“There’s my girl.” His eyes flashed, and then he was kissing me again, only this time his body was on fire as it pressed against me. I felt every ridge of his abs; the length of his body was beyond devastating.

Jack - A Mom Monday Guest Post

I am really excited about this post today, I am such a fan of fairy tales and we are getting so many great re-tellings these days for both adults and children. Jack: The True Story of Jack and the Beanstalk is one book I am anxious to get my hands on and one I know that my middle grade reader will love.  When I got asked to join in on the blog tour you can imagine my excitement.  I was lucky enough to get the chance to ask author Liesl Shurtliff to join me in doing a Guest Post for the blog.  So I posed these two questions to her: What impact did fairy tales have on her growing up and as a writer, and if she hopes that these fun re-tellings and new stories based off of fairy tales will bring readers back to the original stories.

A Fairytale Life

By Liesl Shurtliff

My childhood was one immersed in fairytales. Before I learned to read independently, I watched Shelly Duvall’s Fairy Tale Theatre with the dramatic interpretations of many of the most well-known fairytales and legends. We had recordings of famous ballets like Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Hansel and Gretel. I loved Stephen Sondheim’s Into The Woods starring Bernadette Peters as the witch and it remains my favorite musical to this day. And of course I loved the Disney fairytale movies. I dressed up like a princess. I loved to twirl to Tchiakovsky’s Sleeping Beauty in the living room. I pretended to make brews and potions while camping with my family in the woods. I imagined I could talk to animals.

At some point I picked up a volume of Grimm’s fairytales, given by my grandparents one Christmas. Here I delved into more obscure tales like One Eye, Two Eyes, and Three Eyes and The Three Spinners, but I also revisited some of the more famous tales like Snow White and Cinderella and came to know how differently they’d been portrayed in many books and movies. It didn’t seem to bother me. It felt like finding something both familiar and new, and I think it was this feeling that brought me back to fairytales as a writer.

There is a power and flexibility in these tales that lends themselves well to various themes and messages. They’re cultural markers. Most people are familiar with the stories, but even if they aren’t, they undoubtedly know the symbols and motifs. If I say glass slipper, red cloak, poison apple, your mind invariably thinks Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and Snow White. That’s powerful! Though our social norms and cultural practices have changed over the years, these markers remain steady. As a writer, I have used these tales not just for the sake of showing a new way to look at that particular story, but a new way of looking at the world. I take the familiar and show you how it can become new.

Do I hope readers will go back to the original tales? Absolutely! I hope they’ll read as many versions as they can discover, because doing so will not only show us that stories are flexible and full of possibility, but so are we. We as human beings need not have only one version of ourselves. Though we each have a unique and unchanging DNA structure, our human experience and destiny has endless possibilities. We can’t always control what happens to us, but we can change, reinvent, and write new versions of what we believe we should be. And so we can all live a fairytale. As Hans Christian Anderson said, “Life itself is the most wonderful fairytale.”

Book Description:

Jack has always been told that giants are not real. But if that’s the case, how do you explain the huge, foot shaped pond in the yard, or the occurrence of strange and sudden storms in which the earth quakes and dirt rains from the sky? When his father is carried away in such a storm, Jack gives chase in the only logical way: by trading the family cow for some magic beans that will give him access to a land beyond the clouds. He arrives to find that the giants themselves have giant-sized troubles. With the help of an overachieving little sister, a magic goose and a chatty cook (who is not interested in grinding human bones into bread, thank you very much!) Jack sets out to save his dad and save the day.

I can't tell you how much I loved her response. It made me think of my own girls and my desire to see them taking the stories they read and are read and turning them into their own adventures.  I believe it was Albert Einstein who said:

"If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be very intelligent, read them more fairy tales."

So take a moment to check out Jack, make sure to add it to your TBR and as always thank you for stopping by.  Huge THANK YOU to Liesl Shurtliff for being willing to answer my rather open-ended question and for bringing us back to the joy that is Jack and The Beanstalk.

Liesl Shurtliff was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, with the mountains for her playground. Just like Rump, Liesl was shy about her name, growing up. Not only did it rhyme with weasel, she could never find it on any of those personalized key chains in gift shops. But over the years she’s grown to love having an unusual name—and today she wouldn’t change it for the world!
Before she became a writer, Liesl graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in music, dance, and theater. She now lives in Chicago with her husband and three young children, where she still dreams of the mountains. Rump is her first novel.
