Book Description:

He has one last chance to deserve the girl of his dreams... Overachiever River Purcell was never supposed to be a struggling single mom, working double shifts just to make ends meet. Nor was she supposed to be abandoned by her high school sweetheart, breaking her heart into a thousand jagged pieces. Now Vaughn De Matteo is back in town, his sights set on her...and River is in danger of drowning a second time. No one believed Hook's resident bad boy was good enough for River. Not even Vaughn himself. But he'll fight like hell to win back the woman he never stopped loving, to keep the daughter he never expected, and convince himself he's worth their love in the process––even if he has to rely on their fierce and undeniable sexual chemistry. But even as River's body arches under his hungered touch, the demons of the past lurk in the shadows. Waiting for Vaughn to repeat his mistakes one last time...

  EXCERPT:

Forty-nine months and three days. That was how long it had been since he’d seen her. Vaughn swayed to the right, his shoulder slamming up against the wall. Then he kind of just hung there, counting forward and backward from one to ten. Not helping. Not helping. His stomach pitched at the sight of River walking through the drunks, like a nurse walking among the wounded on a battlefield. She could still knock his lights out on sight. Not that he’d doubted it for a second. But God, if it were possible, she’d grown even more beautiful over the last forty-nine months. Her blond hair was tied up in a ponytail, a pencil stuck through the base, in a way he remembered well enough to make his throat go raw. In a short black skirt and fitted white T-shirt, River tried to look the part of indifferent barmaid, but didn’t pull it off. Not by a stretch. Eyes Vaughn knew were just a shade darker than cornflower blue flitted to each table, and her fingers tugged on the skirt’s hem self-consciously every time she approached a new one. When she fumbled with the notepad, recovering with a nervous laugh, a choked sound left Vaughn. “Riv,” he whispered. She looked up so fast, he might as well have shouted. The sudden impact of having River’s focus on him after such an extended period of time without it released a rushing sound between his ears, blocking out the sad lounge act…and apparently someone asking if he needed a table. Because when Vaughn snapped back to reality, a man he towered over by at least a foot was in his face. Snapping his fingers. “I wouldn’t…” Vaughn shook his head to clear it, experiencing a resurgence of anger, this time for having his attention diverted from where he needed it to be. On River. “I wouldn’t advise snapping your fingers in my face again.” “Why’s that, huh?” A toss of blond hair snagged Vaughn’s gaze as his angelic ex-girlfriend zigzagged through the crowd, drawing more than just his notice. Ah no, quite the opposite. She was putting on an unwitting show for every man in the room, attracting lecherous looks by virtue of being her beautiful self, light in a dark tunnel, same way she’d always been. Finger snapped in front of his face. Again. “This is my place and I asked you a question.” “This is your place?” Vaughn asked. God, one hour back in Jersey and already his accent had thickened from water to oil. “You hired River Purcell to clean up tables?” “That’s right.” Vaughn plowed a fist into the underside of the man’s jaw, watching him fall backward onto the sticky concrete floor with detachment that slowly morphed into satisfaction. So much for calm, he thought, shaking out his right hand.

My Review:

We were introduced to these two in the first Made in Jersey novel, Crashed Out.  River Purcell is sister to rocker Sarge and best friend to Sarge's love interest Jasmine.  Through them we get a good feel for who River is, hardworking woman intent on making it on her own, dedicated mother, sister, and friend.  We also discover the father of her sweet little girl Marcy, River's high school love Vaughn.  We also learn that Vaughn has no idea he's a father until a letter sent by Sarge send Vaughn rushing back to Hook New Jersey a place he left with the belief he was saving River, but instead left her alone and fighting to give their daughter the best life she can.

I love, LOVE this couple.  I love River's dedication to not only her daughter but to herself and her desire to take care of them both on her own.  She could so easily just let her brother care for her, she could have so easily let some man take care of her, but instead she fights to stand on her own two feet, to rely on no one but herself.  I love her drive to at least try to be the best in everything she does, to show her daughter that even though life can be hard, life can also be good but you have to work for it.    Vaughn, sweet, sweet, troubled Vaughn.  He's the kind of hero we need in books.  Heroes that hurt because they are trying to do the right thing.  Heroes that never leave you questioning their devotion to the person they love.  The hero that puts the love of his life first, even if it means breaking his own heart and shattering his soul.  The hero that will drop everything when he discovers that 'She' needs him.  It is so hard not to fall in love with this everyday, every city, every relationship couple.  They are each one of us, (maybe with a bit more sexy talk, haha) they live in a world where money isn't falling out of their pockets where they have to work every day, where they live pay check to pacy check.  They are the couple that says that in the end what matters most is the love for their little family and simply just doing the best they can.

I also throughly enjoyed the introduction of secondary characters, Duke and his sisters...oh how much fun we will have when their stories get told.  At first I honestly thought Duke's sisters were going to drive me insane but Tessa manages to take their wildness and make you fall in love with it.  They are going to keep Duke and the town of Hook on it's toes and I can't wait to see all the fun that occurs do to them.   Duke, he just makes you want to growl and purr all at the same time.  His book can't get here soon enough for me.  Then there's Mr. Three Piece Suit...Renner, all I can say is I am very VERY intrigued. There is one complicated story there and I can't wait to 'hear' it.

My favorite part about this book is how full my heart felt when I 'closed' the back cover.  When I just sat there for a moment basking in the glow of the love between this couple.  Yes there are sexy times, I mean come on we are talking about Tessa 'Queen of Dirty Talk' Bailey, she is one of the best out there when it comes to steamy moments and words that will make you need a high powered fan and I love those moments I really do, but with this book, this book just made me love love!  I absolutely loved the HEART of this couple.  When you are done if you don't walk away feeling like love is the most amazing thing in the world then we should talk, haha.

The only thing that has kept me from giving this a huge 5 love filled stars is that I would have liked more interaction between Vaughn and Marcy and then I would have liked a bit more in the epilogue.  I would have liked to see that they basically stuck it to River's father by getting EVERYTHING they have wanted, but maybe that's just because I have a vindictive streak, ha.  I am hopeful that in future books we will see that come to pass.  We will know that not only do they have the love they deserve but they have a house filled with that love.

This is a fantastic read for ANY contemporary romance fan.  If this is your first introduction to either Tessa or her Made in Jersey series you've chosen a great book to start with.  While Thrown Down is part of the Made in Jersey series it can be read as a standalone.  You will meet the couple from book 1, Crashed Out but you won't be spoiled if you want to go back and read it after you finish Thrown Down.  If you are looking for a book with characters that feel true to life, if you are looking for a book with steamy moments that will leave you gulping down glass after glass of water, or maybe a nice cold beer, if you are looking for a book that will leave your heart full and happy this is the book for you!

~HAPPY READING ~

Tessa Bailey is originally from Carlsbad, California. The day after high school graduation, she packed her yearbook, ripped jeans and laptop, driving cross-country to New York City in under four days.   Her most valuable life experiences were learned thereafter while waitressing at K-Dees, a Manhattan pub owned by her uncle. Inside those four walls, she met her husband, best friend and discovered the magic of classic rock, managing to put herself through Kingsborough Community College and the English program at Pace University at the same time. Several stunted attempts to enter the work force as a journalist followed, but romance writing continued to demand her attention. She now lives in Long Island, New York with her husband of eight years and four-year-old daughter. Although she is severely sleep-deprived, she is incredibly happy to be living her dream of writing about people falling in love.

In this first installment of NY Times bestselling author, Wendy Higgins’s debut New Adult series, a frighteningly realistic apocalyptic America is brought to life, entwined with searing romantic tension that will leave you eager for more.

Amber Tate believes the worst thing she’ll suffer in life is dealing with the unrequited love she feels for her brother’s best friend, Rylen Fite. She also believes war is something unfortunate that happens places far, far away from her rural Nevada town. She’s wrong on both counts.

When an unknown organization meticulously bombs major cities in the United States and across the globe, a trickle-down effect spreads to remaining towns at an alarming speed—everything from food and water sources to technological communications are compromised. Without leadership, the nation is split between paralysis and panic, but Amber isn’t one to hide or watch helplessly. She’s determined to put her nursing skills to use, despite the danger, even if it means working alongside the man she can never have.

Series:  Devil's Rock, book 1
Genre:  Contemporary Romance
Age Recommendation: 18 and up

~ I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ~

Book Description:

Some men come with a built-in warning label. Knox Callaghan is one of them. Danger radiates from every lean, muscled inch of him, and his deep blue eyes seem to see right through to Briar Davis’s most secret fantasies. But there’s one major problem: Briar is a nurse volunteering at the local prison, and Knox is an inmate who should be off-limits in every way.

Knox feels it too—a shocking animal magnetism that drives him to risk his own life to protect Briar’s. Paroled at last, he tries to resist her. She’s too innocent, too sweet, and she has no idea what Knox is capable of. But a single touch can lead to a kiss—and a taste . . . until the only crime is denying what feels so right . . .

My Review:

I hate to admit it because it just seems so wrong because...well I mean just because, but this was my first Sophie Jordan read.  Her historical romances are all in my TBR and I think about them often but some how they're still there.  Then one morning a tatted up bad boy serving prison time crosses my path and I went all in...what that says about me I don't know but I won't regret my choices.  Well, maybe except that regret of seeing Sophie's other books sitting in my TBR pile, after this i can promise you they won't remain there much longer.

Briar Davis is determined.  She's determined to overcome her past, she's determined to be the best nurse she can be, she's determined to get the promotion...sounds all good right?  Well, until that determination leads her to being the only volunteer to help her family practice Dr. serve the prison community of Devil's Rock.  Briar knows what 'these men' are like.  She grew up with a violent father, she knows all 'these men' are just like or worse than him.  The world is black and white and while she's agreed to help in the prison clinic she knows that these men are nothing but monsters and she will just have to endure them, get out, and get that coveted promotion.

Knox Callaghan has spent his twenties becoming a hardened, ruthless member of a prison gang while serving out his sentence. He's been in eight years, he's learned how to survive, he's learned how to keep he and his brother (North) safe, he's learned that while he may not be a good man he isn't the monster the world sees him as.  He has four goals, survive, keep his brother safe, get released, and NEVER go back.  Then Nurse Davis walks into his world and while his goals don't change the world he lives in does.

I loved Knox, he is such a wonderful character.  He's not the typical 'bad boy', he's not running around with the machismo effect following everywhere he goes.  He's not a condescending ass that women in books fawn over and then either learn to accept and fall in love or manage to some how change him and fall in love.  No, Knox is a man with a strong moral center who has had to harden himself and his heart due to his circumstances.  He's a quiet man who will protect those he loves even if that means putting his own life on the line to do it.  He may look like a 'bad boy' with his build, his tattoo's, his prison reputation, but he is a really good man as the song goes.

Now Briar, Briar I really did like her but I have to say that her constant pigeon-holing of people did get a bit on my nerves.  I know that she comes from a past that affects her present and maybe the fact that I know Knox's background colors that opinion because her prejudice while understandable in the beginning begins to rub me the wrong way after in continues for so long in the story.  Other than that though I really like Briar, she may come across as a bit timid but in truth she is an incredibly strong woman who won't back down from what she knows is right and what she knows she wants.

Sophie does a beautiful job at fleshing out these characters and their relationships.  I loved that about this book.  There isn't insta-love, attraction absolutely, but the love between these characters is given the chance to build, the characters a chance to grow.  We are allowed to learn exactly who they are without all those gratuitous steamy scenes muddling their development.  The relationship between Knox and Briar feels real because it takes it's time and builds upon itself.  Don't let that keep you from reading if what you are looking for is a steamy romance though because guess what you get that too.  The attraction between Briar and Knox is intense and when they finally do come together, get your fans out readers oh and maybe before you start run out a buy a pint of Cherry Garcia....that is if you think you can handle it!  *WOW*

I also loved her secondary characters.  Well I loved most of them.  Briar's sister, yeah.  I mean I get that she isn't supposed to be a hero in this book, but even when she does the right thing I can't seem to let go of all the bad she did.  I just can't like her, which when I think about it makes me feel very much like Briar with her pre-conceived notions of all the men at Devil's Rock...guess I need to work not that, haha.  But, But!  North, Knox's brother!  Oh my heart, I am going to be so torn up over him I  know it.  I read this book several weeks ago and I am still worried about North and aching for his book, which is not next. *cries fat ugly tears of anxiousness and worry*  Then there is Reid, the leader of Devil's Rock biggest, baddest gang.  I am so ready for his story and thankfully for us his book is next, (Hell Breaks Loose) we get a wild introduction to his future toward the end of All Chained Up and it's going to be a crazy ride.  Even though we don't see much of Reid through out the book he is an integral part of the story and like Sophie's other secondary characters (and something she has done amazingly well in this book) I feel like I already know this man's character.  I know deep down what type of men Reid and North are, what we don't know is how they will handle the life laid out in front of them and that will have you coming back and invested in these 'bad boys' of Devil's Rock.

If you are a fan of Contemporary Romances, Dark Romances, MC based Romances, you will be a fan of The Devil's Rock series.  You'll be invested in this series after just the first few chapters of All Chained Up and anxiously waiting for more.  This was a wonderful introduction to Sophie Jordan for me and I can't wait for both more in this series and to dive into that TBR pile I talked about early to pull out her other books!

3 Finished Copies of ALL CHAINED UP (US Only)

Sophie Jordan took her adolescent daydreaming one step further and penned her first historical romance in the back of her high school Spanish class. This passion led her to pursue a degree in English and History.

A brief stint in law school taught her that case law was not nearly as interesting as literature - teaching English seemed the natural recourse. After several years teaching high school students to love Antigone, Sophie resigned with the birth of her first child and decided it was time to pursue the long-held dream of writing.

In less than three years, her first book, Once Upon A Wedding Night, a 2006 Romantic Times Reviewers' Choice Nominee for Best First Historical, hit book shelves. Her second novel, Too Wicked To Tame, released in March 2007 with a bang, landing on the USA Today Bestseller's List.

I frown, peering over at the boat in question, now even blurrier than before. “I didn’t notice anyone there.”
“Not surprised. Come on. You need to go to bed.” His hand slides around my lower back and prods me toward shore.
A rare defiant streak surges. I didn’t fly thousands of miles away from my overbearing mama only to be scolded and ordered around by a stranger. I jab his chest with my finger. “You can’t tell me what to do. You’re not the boss of me. The boss is the boss of me. And he can boss me.” I’m not sure that made much sense.
“And who is he?” Amusement laces his tone.
“I don’t know. Some arrogant big bad wolf billionaire who sleeps with Victoria’s Secret models and changes women like underwear. He sounds like a complete jerk. But you’re not him. You’re...” I’m leaning against his chest now. A broad, solid chest, his muscles hard against me. I reach up with the hand I used to poke him to touch the few weeks’ worth of growth covering his face, my fingertips scratching across the coarse hair. “A lumberjack.”
“A lumberjack.”
“Yes. With this beard and this,” I rub my hand over his flannel checkered jacket, sitting open, and then to the shirt beneath, reveling in the ridges of his stomach. “Definitely a lumberjack. Did they hire lumberjacks to cut wood for that giant fireplace in there? They’ve hired people for everything else. I mean, seriously, who comes up to Alaska to get their pubic area waxed and their hair colored? And yet there’s a full-service salon!”
His hands have found my waist again. He takes several steps backward, pulling me along with him.
But I dig my heels in. “I’m not going anywhere until I check the water for my glasses! I have a flashlight!” I yell, earning his shush.
He heaves a sigh. “Will you let me take you back to your cabin immediately after?”
“Once I do that, I will happily go to bed with you. Not with you. I’ll go to bed. I’m not going to bed with a lumberjack.” My tongue feels thick and slow as it trips over my rambling words.
“Fine. But I’m holding on to you the entire time. The owner doesn’t need any of his employees drowning.”
“Deal.”
He leads me back to the edge and drops to his knees with me. “Sit your ass right down or you’ll end up pulling us both in.”
“That’s no way to speak to a lady.”
He snorts. “It is when she’s as stubborn as a mule and as drunk as an Irishman.”

New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Carrie Ann Ryan never thought she’d be a writer. Not really. No, she loved math and science and even went on to graduate school in chemistry. Yes, she read as a kid and devoured teen fiction and Harry Potter, but it wasn’t until someone handed her a romance book in her late teens that she realized that there was something out there just for her. When another author suggested she use the voices in her head for good and not evil, The Redwood Pack and all her other stories were born. Carrie Ann is a bestselling author of over twenty novels and novellas and has so much more on her mind (and on her spreadsheets *grins*) that she isn’t planning on giving up her dream anytime soon.

 Check out this excerpt:

“But the king’s army prevailed after all,” Eleanor said weakly. “And now he thinks you a traitor.”

“From where I sat, it looked like Horwath would be destroyed. The men were fighting slothfully. No one’s heart was in it to defend Ceredigion from the invader. But then the king summoned his knights and rode into battle himself. The conflict was raging below them when they made their charge. I watched it, Eleanor. There were only twenty . . . maybe thirty knights in all, but they came like a flood. As if the very Fountain were driving them. They clashed with lances and swords. The king himself unhorsed his enemy and then jumped from his injured horse and killed the man with his own sword. The invaders swarmed him, but he fought as if he had the strength of a dozen men. They fell away from him, and when they saw his triumph, Horwath’s men became demons!” His eyes were wide with shock and amazement. “Severn defeated them by himself. Even with his twisted leg and his hunchback, he was unstoppable. I rode hard to join the fray and helped capture the fallen army. The king’s crown had fallen from his head during the fighting and I found it in a hawthorn bush. I told him . . . I told him that I was loyal.” His face went white.

Eleanor felt her knees losing strength. She clutched to her husband, as if they were alone on an island and the waves of the sea were crashing around them, trying to drag them into the surf. Her ears were ringing with the words.

“The king ordered Jorganon’s death. He mocked me, saying perhaps I still had sons to spare. And so he sent Horwath with me to bid you the tidings. Thus sayeth King Severn Argentine to the Lady Eleanor Kiskaddon: Choose you another son to be hostage, to live in the palace of Kingfountain under His Majesty’s wardship. Prove your good faith and obedience. Pick the son who will stand as surety for your house.”

Lady Eleanor would have fainted, but she somehow managed to keep her feet. She looked up at her husband. “I must trust that man with another of my children?” Her heart hammered violently in her chest and she quailed under the weight of her grief. “That . . . that . . . butcher?”

“Stiev Horwath has come to bring the child to Kingfountain,” her husband said, his look full of misery. “If we do not choose, he will execute our entire family for treason now.”

Lady Eleanor sobbed against her husband’s chest. It was a choice no mother should be forced to make. Should she sacrifice one child so that all the others might live? But King Severn was ruthless and cunning. Would the child she selected be the only of her children to survive?

She wept bitterly, swallowed by grief and unable to think. Who could she part with? Why had the choice even been given to her if not to make her suffering more acute? She hated the king. She hated him with all her passion, all her grief. How could she decide such a thing? How would she hand one of her boys over to a man who had murdered his own brother’s sons? The king’s hands were so wet with blood a trail probably dribbled wherever he went.

In her grief, she did not hear the door open or the soft padding of feet. She did not notice until Owen’s arms wrapped around their legs.

He squeezed them both so hard, and though she could not hear any words, she could imagine his thoughts, his childlike attempt to comfort them. There, there, Maman, Papan. There, there! It will be all right, Maman, Papan. There, there!

She stared down at her son, her innocent son. And then a memory stirred.

A memory of the royal midwife who had saved his life.
