Book Description:

In this scorching Dark Kings novella, New York Times bestselling author Donna Grant brings together a determined Dragon King used to getting what he wants and an Ice Queen who thaws for no one.

Marked by passion.

A promise made eons ago sends Sebastian to Italy on the hunt to find an enemy. His quarry proves difficult to locate, but there is someone who can point him in the right direction – a woman as frigid as the north. Using every seductive skill he’s acquired over his immortal life, his seduction begins. Until he discovers that the passion he stirs within her makes him burn for more…

Gianna Santini has one love in her life – work. A disastrous failed marriage was evidence enough to realize she was better off on her own. That is until a handsome Scot strolled into her life and literally swept her off her feet. She is unprepared for the blazing passion between them or the truth he exposes. But as her world begins to unravel, she realizes the only one she can depend on is the very one destroying everything – a Dragon King.

My Review:

I am going to start this with a caveat, dun-dun-dahhhhh...no it isn't  big deal but I do think I need to mention it.  If you have followed any of my 1,001 Dark Nights reviews you know I am a huge proponent of the fact that you can pick up any of these novellas regardless of if you have never read any of the books in the series and you wouldn't be lost or felt like you were missing out on any parts of the story. Dragon Burn however doesn't fit into that same mold.  There are so many little pieces of information in this book, little points that unless you have read the previous books you won't understand their importance.  Now the good thing about that is that if you haven't ever read the series I suppose you won't know what you are missing, haha but trust me when I say that you will be missing out.

As is typical with these novella's there is a lot that I can't tell you, especially in the case of this one because there are so many little plot points that aren't going to really answer your questions but are going to get your inner sleuth on the job.  This is one of those series that now, at book 11.5, I wish I had started a book 'bible'.  I wish I had family trees, Venn diagrams, graphs,  color charts.... I almost, ALMOST, wish I had highlighted anything I thought was important the minute I started reading this series.  Donna has been pulling us along on this amazing trail and leaving little bread crumbs the whole time and in Dragon Burn I know that she's basically dumped one of her bread bags right at our feet and if I had kept up with all the little pieces in the past I might be able to answer some questions now.  This series is a great work of theories and sleuthing and I know we are getting to a precipice with Dragon Burn being a huge step toward the Ah-Ha moment we have all been waiting for.

I throughly enjoyed the romantic relationship between Sebastian and Gianna, yes it is an insta-love but ah mother-nature she does love to do that to our Dragon Kings.  These characters have all been hurt by betrayal and centuries of watching the human world destroy everything the Dragon's once loved.  It is easy to understand their hesitancy to, even after 11 books, be open to the idea of finding their mate so the push-pull dynamic we have come to associate with a Dragon King novel is all there thought in Dragon Burn it isn't quite in the fore front of the story, there are so many other things happening in such a short amount of time that Sebastian gives in quicker than the Kings who have had a full length novel, but that is as one would expect.  The romance is smooth and steamy, it flows perfectly into the rest of the story, you'll fall in love with both these characters and I can't wait to see how they interact with the others once they return to Dreagan, I definitely need more from this couple.

There are a lot of twists and turns and little bits of information that will make you say ah-ha and ooohhhhh.  Something big is coming and it's all getting set up here in this little novella so do not skip this book!

~ HAPPY READING ~

Excerpt:

She lifted her hand from the water, raising her arm to watch the droplets run down her limb. “I wish I could stop time.”

“I know,” he murmured and kissed the side of her face. “I do as well.”

“The day flew past. And why do I feel like everything is ending?”

Because it was, though he wouldn’t tell her that. “It’s no’ over yet.”

She reached back and wrapped her arms around him, a moan rumbling in her chest. “My body is no longer mine. You’ve touched every inch. I can feel you on my skin and deep inside me.”

He brought her arms down before running his hand along her arm and intertwining their fingers. His mouth moved to her ear where he whispered, “I can still feel your fire.”

“It’ll always be yours.”

They remained until the water began to cool. It was the only thing that drove them from their silence. Sebastian glanced out the window and saw the darkness. He knew before Gianna finished drying off that she was leaving.

His mind raced with ideas of how he could get her to stay. He started to reach for her, to kiss her and make love to her again, but it was only prolonging the inevitable. He had business he needed to take care of, and the farther away Gianna was from that, the better.

While she gathered her clothes in the trail they’d left, he grabbed a pair of jeans and a white tee. When he went downstairs barefoot, he found her sitting on the sofa putting on her shoes.

His boat had been returned last night, thanks to his careful planning and the huge amount of money he’d paid. He could drive her home, but Sebastian knew he wouldn’t leave her if he did. The best thing would be to let her go now. Though it was killing him.

She drew in a deep breath and released it as she came to her feet. “This is good-bye, isn’t it?”

“It is.”

Her eyes moved to look out the windows over the Grand Canal. “But you’ll return one day.”

“Sure,” he lied. He didn’t have the courage to give her the entire truth—that as long as she was alive, he’d never return to Venice.

Because if he did, he’d go to her.

He’d search until he found her—and then he’d never let her go again.
