Publisher: AMF Publishing
Series:  Heavy Influence, book 3
Genre:  Contemporary Romance
Age Recommendation: 16 and up
Rating: 4 Stars

Book Description:

When a tropical rendezvous with the love of his life turns into an life-altering reunion, they must decide what's more important - their happily ever after or doing the right thing.

 Can it be both?

My Review:

I will admit that I went into this book with a lot of trepidation and I honestly told a friend that I wasn't sure I could trust that Ann Marie Frohoff would give me a happy ending and not break my heart.  This series has been emotionally brutal and I could see her giggling in her pjs with a glass of wine or cup of coffee near by as she wrote out an ending that would leave her readers in tears and despair.  I don't know what that says about her or me haha, but I can tell you that she didn't rip my heart to shreds and then do an Irish jig on top of it's remains.  Can I say that everything is perfect in Jake and Aly's world?  No and after their past would you expect that, would you even want it?  Ann Marie has been brutally honest in this couples relationship.  A relationship that began with children falling in love, that battled stardom, anxiety, addiction, heart break, too many mistakes to count...a relationship that you will find with this book has grown into a mature love but is...yet to settle.  A love that has been battered but has come out stronger for it.  A love that proves that some loves run so deep that they can never be forgotten or let go of.

Jake and Aly are back, time has passed, they have both grown and discovered who they are...who they want to be on their own as opposed to as together.  They have realized that they aren't Just Jake and Aly as a unit but Jake, Aly, and Jake and Aly if that makes sense.  Aly has spent her past few years engaged to her long time friend and finishing her college education.  Jake has spent his drying out from his addictions and coming to terms with who he had become and the trail of pain he left behind him while he was in the grips of those addictions.

I don't want to go into too much detail because there is a twist to this story...you can't possibly believe  we would get a straight up HEA could you?  This is also not a full length novel, it is more a novella so it would be hard to give too much with out giving too much away because it all happens fairly quickly.  I will say that is the one thing that keeps me from going for that 5 star rating.  I wished the book had been a bit longer, that there had been more *gasp*, dare I say it, drama between Jake and Aly.  I love that they are back, but they simply just fell back together...after everything I wanted there to be more emotion between the two.  Aly deserved to be more angry, Jake more contrite.  We've spent years with this couple in some pretty serious and explosive situations so the calmness that occurs in this book throws me a bit for a loop. I know that they have both matured greatly in their time apart and that has a lot to do with how they handle one another now but at the same time when a couple has gone through everything this couple has the lack of explosive emotions is...unexpected.  That said, it looks like we have more to come from this couple so we may get that yet and I will say I am glad that we aren't letting them go after this.  We need more time to watch these two grow, (goodness, please don't let them end up not together in the end.  I know Ann Marie isn't done with us yet and I am still scared, haha) we need to see Jake truly redeem himself, we need to see Aly open her heart fully (or close it off completely, *gasp*), we need to know about Grace and Kai (whaaaaaa?!), find out how all the relationships finally settle. I think Ann Marie has at least one more book in her after this one and I am on the edge of my seat waiting for it.  I feel like her final book in this series should end with an Oprah style 'Closure for you, and you get closure, and you, and you....and here's your closure...YOU ALL GET CLOSURE!'  I just need her to make sure she doesn't break my heart when she does it, m'kay.

If you are a fan of contemporary romances, second chances (third and fourth in Jake and Aly's case), highly emotional reads, drama, stories of heartbreak and redemption, this is your series.  I will not lie to you, this has not been an easy journey, Ann Marie will break your heart over and over again but I think we will all find that it will have been worth it in the end.  This is not a standalone, you must read the series from the beginning or you will be completely lost.  Love Amplified is a quick read, a little over novella length but packed full to the edges.  You won't need your tissues for this one, but we aren't done yet so don't put your Kleenex boxes and bottles of wine away just yet and as always...

Ann Marie ("Annie") Frohoff grew up in sunny Southern California. As a teen and young adult she spent her time frequenting and living in nearly every beachside city up and down the coast. She settled in Hollywood at 19 working in film and TV. Soon her itch to keep moving took over again, taking her to Hawaii for a time and then back to LA.

She’s now settled in the South Bay area of Los Angeles. Her wanderlust and propensity to live life out loud has brought her many life experiences. Always the storyteller, it would be of no surprise to those who grew up with her, that she made the transition into a book and screenplay writer. You could say that she woke up one day and had an epiphany, deciding to go to school for screenwriting. It’s with that inner fire she set out to write her first screenplay. Soon after, such work made it into the hands of an agency creative executive who challenged her to write a novel to support the complex cast of characters she’d created. Thus, after only a couple of years and many hours on the road immersing herself in her subject matter; her edgy modern day "Walk The Line" meets John Hughes Classics, Heavy Influence series was on its way!

The first installment in her Heavy Influence Series, FIRST KISS(#1) released in 2013, FEVER PITCH(#1.5) 2013, BROKEN NOTES (#2) in Dec. 2014, and HIGHER OCTAVE (#2.5) in Feb. 2015. ~

The series is a story of young, reckless love between a rising rock star and his younger muse, spanning 10 years of their tumultuous and passionate relationship. An original soundtrack has been written and recorded for this series, of which the lyrics appear in the pages of the books. (Alternative Rock Genre).

Annie has now also delved into the supernatural fantasy world with her writing partners Shaun Barger and songwriter/musician Matthew Reich. Taking inspiration directly from song lyrics and building an entire realm of vastly complex characters and plot lines; weaving history, fantasy and heavy doses of romance together. You will be kept turning the pages of “The Zodiac Wars" and “Precious Metal: The Prince and the Gypsy” book series. Both series of books are currently in development.

Book Description:

THE 3rd TURN OF THE SHADOW TECH GODDESS
The quest of Paymaster Stenstrom spans the planes, taking a bizarre turn in the 3rd universe, as there he is not an affluent man but a woman in desperate circumstances. Lady Stenibelle is imprisoned for her role in the Seeker Affair, is penniless, and her House of Belmont-South Tyrol is on the verge of extinction. Her spirit broken, Stenibelle is resigned to perform her sentence without fuss, do as she is told, and fade away in obscurity.     However, fate is not yet finished with her. Stenibelle is in the gaze of hidden benefactors with ulterior motives. People claiming to be her dear friends come forward, yet she does not know them. The Quests of the Shadow tech Goddess proceed, and she must discover the hero that lies within or face total oblivion. The disgraced 30th daughter of the House of Belmont will either be the final stake driven into its dying heart, or the ray of light that comes to save it and all else that follows.

My Review:

I am going to admit I do not quite know where to go with this book.  It turned out to be both infinitely more complex than I expected and also startlingly simple in it's storyline.  I suppose however that is how a good Sci-Fi book should go.  The theories, the concepts, the technology can be difficult to wrap your mind around if this isn't a subject that you have delved into much, but the story is perfect in its ease and simplicity.

This is the story of Stenibelle (Bel).  A woman who has been shamed, disgraced, imprisoned, and broken.  She has lost all hope and all drive, just wishing to pass her time in jail as quietly as possible, to slip away into history.  She is the 30th daughter, a daughter of little consequence, a daughter who attempted and failed to aid her family which is teetering on the edge of demise.
7 months after her imprisonment she is suddenly plucked from obscurity and sent on an adventure that will cross the stars and challenge her way of belief as what she discovers about her self and others crosses universes.

I really did enjoy this story, but I have to admit to finding my self lost multiple times, now that just be an issue for me as I can hardly seem to grasp the concept of Dr. Who and the idea of timelines crossing etc in this book make me think of that.  If I let go of all the things my mind simply can't seem to wrap itself around I found that I thoroughly enjoyed this story.  I liked the cast of characters, the way that his broken woman rises to her full potential through the book.  That she fights back her inner demons and realizes her strength, worth, and grace.  It isn't an easy road she travels to get there, but I loved that she does get there. I enjoyed the secondary characters of Gwen, A-Ram, Alesta, Morgan, and Hannah-Ben Shurlamp, but I wanted more of them.  I realize that they are secondary characters to Bel but they play such major roles I felt like we missed so much of what they were doing on the sidelines.  This is where it gets a bit tricky for me as a reviewer because I can not decide if this is a standalone or not.  When I look it up on Goodreads it comes up as a League of Elder book, which is the title of a series by author Ren Garcia, however this one isn't numbered as being part of the series.  So, the question is would I be getting everything I was looking for in this book in other books....possibly 8 books that may have come before this one?  This can be read as a standalone, but I am honestly not sure it is meant to be.  It always felt like I was missing little pieces of history that would have tied everything together nicely for me. And, if it isn't a part of the series, are we getting more because I will honestly say I want more.  I want to see all of these lives play out, I want the future reveled because although this is not a cliff hanger ending, it is clear that things are not finished.   I can't say much with out giving away important aspects of the story, but I want the stories of ALL the people, I want to see how they connect and weave together...and I kinda really want Morgan to find her happiness because my heart pretty much broke for her.

I loved the artwork in this book and highly suggest that in buying this book you get the 'hard' copy.  I read it in e-book format and while we still get the pictures I can just imagine how wonderful they are on paper.  I mean just take a peek at the picture of the cover below and then imagine more of that through your book.  The art really helped me to understand who each person is.  When so much is being 'thrown' at your brain such as all the concepts and tech, having pictures of people, who are outside of the 'norm' of expectation, to free up your mind in its attempt to form everything is so nice, ha.  Plus the artwork is really just so cool.  I mean look at Hannah-Ben Shurlump, I would have never come up with that in my own mind!

There is a bit more 'raunchiness' in the book than I expected which is perfectly acceptable and fine with me (I mean really, lets look at some of the books I've read in past reviews, ha) but you should know going into it that there are some pretty 'spicy' scenes and while it is not a theme of the book, it does take front and center a few times. It leans to the whole feel of the book so it is not misplaced or gratuitous, but if you are a younger Sci-Fi reader or are considering it for a younger reader, keep that in mind. I would say no younger than 17, but you know your readers best...definitely (in my opinion) aren't going to want to put this in your 14 year olds hands though.

I would love to see this book play out on a screen.  The world that Ren Garcia builds is complex, brutal, ugly, and yet beautiful all at once.  I imagine it being very much like the world from Disney's Treasure Planet, only grittier.  One thing I also thought as I was reading along is that I think this would be an amazing audio book.  I have actually never listened to an audio book but this one just screamed out to me to be listened too.  The idea of hearing it instead of reading it makes me feel like it would allow me to more easily place myself in this world and become lost to it.

I think this is a great read for any Sci-Fi fans.  I will look into the status of this book within the League of Elder series and let you know...you may want to start with the first book there, but honestly I am not sure if they all connect or not.  This is a fast paced quick read and once you get into it you really will want to just devour it in one sitting.

***Update: A exciting few words from the author that help explain where Stenibelle fits, I will be heading over to get my copies of the other books now, yea!***

"Stenibelle is actually Book 9 in the League of Elder series. It's part of the "Turns of the Shadow tech Goddess books, which start in Book 8 (The Shadow tech Goddess)--more books for that group are in-progress.
Paymaster Stenstrom/Stenibelle, A-Ram, Lady Alesta, Morgan-Jeterix and the others are all introduced in Books 6 and 7 (Sands of the Solar Empire/Against the Druries) Books 1-5 deal with a different group of characters in the same universe." -Ren Garcia

Book Description:
Ror lives to draw—to her, it’s like breathing; it’s how she understands life. Raised on a Staten Island commune, she’s never attended a day of school, and knows little of the outside world. When her paranoid father burns down the commune with himself inside, Ror, her mother, and sister end up in a homeless residence in Manhattan. There, she runs into trouble—and love—with Trey, the leader of Noise Ink, a graffiti crew.  On the city’s streets, and in its museums and galleries, Ror finds herself pulled in different directions. Her father wanted her to make classic art. Noise Ink insists she stay within their lines. Her art teacher urges her to go to college. But what does she want? Ror’s soul-searching—expressed in remarkable drawings and sharp-edged prose, set in the gritty Manhattan of 1984—is cinematic in its scope, and its seamless blend of text and art makes Into the Dangerous World a groundbreaking event in young adult fiction.

My Review:
This is a rather difficult book for me to review because it is so far out of my realm of expectancy and has such an amazingly personal feel to it that I almost feel like reviewing this book is the equivalent of telling another person how I feel about all their life choices as a teenager.
One thing I did not realize going into this book is the era in which it covers.  This is the era of my childhood (although, and I have to admit this to make myself feel better, I was not quite a teenager during this time), this was a time that our society found itself in a bit of an upheaval.  The Vietnam War had only 'ended' ten years prior to the stories timeline, We were on the cusp of the Cold War, the idealism of the 60's and 70's had come seemingly to a screeching halt as people struggled to find a new identity in a post wartime world where government, inflation, conservatism, and materialism had begun to explode.  This is a time where a generation of teens were lost in the fray, trying to find their own places as they began to mature and come into themselves, a time where a lost generation of children were trying to fight the changes around them and find their voices.

All that being said...Teens of today's world, do not set this book aside as the book of your parents generation.  Do not think that this is a story that won't resonate with you because it came from a time before you were a blip in the atmosphere.  Do not think that because this book is as much a history book as it is a fiction story that you won't find it interesting because in each of these things you would find yourself mistaken.  This book is a book that can and will open your eyes to the world that was being shaped while your parents were your age now.  This is a book about self discovery, about fears, and desires.  A book about finding your place in this huge machine of a world, of standing your ground, taking chances, and becoming the person you are meant to be.  This is a book that will surely grab your attention and get you asking questions of your teachers and parents.  It will remind you that  while in each generation we feel like we are the only ones, that no one could ever feel the way we do, or struggle the way you do, YOU are not alone.  We may not all travel the same path but we have all been at the same point sometime in our lives...simply said, your parents understand you more than you may ever realize.

Aurora (Ror) is quite the conundrum for me, as much as I think she is for herself actually.  She grew up in a faltering commune living by the ideals her father (Dado) set forth and attempted to foster.  After tragedy strikes the family, Ror, her mother, and her older sister are forced to now rely on a system which they had shunned, a system which is fundamentally broken and leaves them struggling to survive in the harsh world of New York City's poverty.  She is thrown in to the public school system as a sophomore who is artistically inclined, been burned badly enough that she feels the need to cover her head with knit caps, was raised and home schooled in a 'hippie' commune, and taught to fear 'the man'.  This would be a Dangerous World to any teenager, a world in which they don't fit in, are labeled, and if not outright bullied then ignored, but this is the world she now has to find her own place in and she begins to do that through her art.

I really would have loved to have more of her story.  I would not say that the book ended abruptly but to feel as though you have travelled this incredible journey of self discovery with Ror and never know what happens to her as she goes out 'Into the Dangerous World' was a bit of a downer.  I know we should all take that moment to use our own imaginations and see her future through our own eyes, but man I would have liked to have heard it from the author, at least in a epilogue. I think the reasoning is because as I said in the beginning of this review, I felt like this was a truly personal story in many ways and I need to know how it ended from their eyes because I could simply not do it justice.

Readers will love the art in the book, it has a bit of a graphic novel vibe to it, which truly just enhances the story being told.  It makes it so much easier to visualize everything Ror and the NoiseInk Crew do, especially for readers like myself who are not artistically inclined, ha.  I have to admit to googling 'Fire Pop' and I am still not certain I know exactly what that artistic term means, although I am going with my best guess, haha.  I am a HUGE fan of e-readers as many of you know and I did read this book as an e-copy but I think in this case this is a definite hard copy kind of book.  I think having the ability to physically touch the pages, the art, would make the connection to this story even more emotional.

This is a great read for young YA readers (14 and up) as well as adults.  For me it was a bit of a look back into my history (although I grew up in a very different way) and made me want to search out information that I would not have had about our society when I was a teen.  For teens, I think this is an important book of self discovery, of learning to trust yourself.  I would love to see this book in high school/college English Lit classes being analyzed and discussed.  I think it could truly open a whole new world for people.

**This book does deal with the death of two parents and some of the harsh reality of living in poverty. Please for parents of younger YA readers especially, although I would suggest this to everyone, take the time to discuss this book with your reader!**
