My Review:

I am going to start this with a caveat, dun-dun-dahhhhh...no it isn't  big deal but I do think I need to mention it.  If you have followed any of my 1,001 Dark Nights reviews you know I am a huge proponent of the fact that you can pick up any of these novellas regardless of if you have never read any of the books in the series and you wouldn't be lost or felt like you were missing out on any parts of the story. Dragon Burn however doesn't fit into that same mold.  There are so many little pieces of information in this book, little points that unless you have read the previous books you won't understand their importance.  Now the good thing about that is that if you haven't ever read the series I suppose you won't know what you are missing, haha but trust me when I say that you will be missing out.

As is typical with these novella's there is a lot that I can't tell you, especially in the case of this one because there are so many little plot points that aren't going to really answer your questions but are going to get your inner sleuth on the job.  This is one of those series that now, at book 11.5, I wish I had started a book 'bible'.  I wish I had family trees, Venn diagrams, graphs,  color charts.... I almost, ALMOST, wish I had highlighted anything I thought was important the minute I started reading this series.  Donna has been pulling us along on this amazing trail and leaving little bread crumbs the whole time and in Dragon Burn I know that she's basically dumped one of her bread bags right at our feet and if I had kept up with all the little pieces in the past I might be able to answer some questions now.  This series is a great work of theories and sleuthing and I know we are getting to a precipice with Dragon Burn being a huge step toward the Ah-Ha moment we have all been waiting for.

I throughly enjoyed the romantic relationship between Sebastian and Gianna, yes it is an insta-love but ah mother-nature she does love to do that to our Dragon Kings.  These characters have all been hurt by betrayal and centuries of watching the human world destroy everything the Dragon's once loved.  It is easy to understand their hesitancy to, even after 11 books, be open to the idea of finding their mate so the push-pull dynamic we have come to associate with a Dragon King novel is all there thought in Dragon Burn it isn't quite in the fore front of the story, there are so many other things happening in such a short amount of time that Sebastian gives in quicker than the Kings who have had a full length novel, but that is as one would expect.  The romance is smooth and steamy, it flows perfectly into the rest of the story, you'll fall in love with both these characters and I can't wait to see how they interact with the others once they return to Dreagan, I definitely need more from this couple.

There are a lot of twists and turns and little bits of information that will make you say ah-ha and ooohhhhh.  Something big is coming and it's all getting set up here in this little novella so do not skip this book!

~ HAPPY READING ~

Excerpt:

She lifted her hand from the water, raising her arm to watch the droplets run down her limb. “I wish I could stop time.”

“I know,” he murmured and kissed the side of her face. “I do as well.”

“The day flew past. And why do I feel like everything is ending?”

Because it was, though he wouldn’t tell her that. “It’s no’ over yet.”

She reached back and wrapped her arms around him, a moan rumbling in her chest. “My body is no longer mine. You’ve touched every inch. I can feel you on my skin and deep inside me.”

He brought her arms down before running his hand along her arm and intertwining their fingers. His mouth moved to her ear where he whispered, “I can still feel your fire.”

“It’ll always be yours.”

They remained until the water began to cool. It was the only thing that drove them from their silence. Sebastian glanced out the window and saw the darkness. He knew before Gianna finished drying off that she was leaving.

His mind raced with ideas of how he could get her to stay. He started to reach for her, to kiss her and make love to her again, but it was only prolonging the inevitable. He had business he needed to take care of, and the farther away Gianna was from that, the better.

While she gathered her clothes in the trail they’d left, he grabbed a pair of jeans and a white tee. When he went downstairs barefoot, he found her sitting on the sofa putting on her shoes.

His boat had been returned last night, thanks to his careful planning and the huge amount of money he’d paid. He could drive her home, but Sebastian knew he wouldn’t leave her if he did. The best thing would be to let her go now. Though it was killing him.

She drew in a deep breath and released it as she came to her feet. “This is good-bye, isn’t it?”

“It is.”

Her eyes moved to look out the windows over the Grand Canal. “But you’ll return one day.”

“Sure,” he lied. He didn’t have the courage to give her the entire truth—that as long as she was alive, he’d never return to Venice.

Because if he did, he’d go to her.

He’d search until he found her—and then he’d never let her go again.

My Review:

Okay, I am just going to rip the bandaid off, get right to the hard truth so that then we can get to the good stuff.  This cover, this cover is awful.  Man it hurts me to be so blunt and to say that, but honestly if I hadn't read this authors work before and hadn't been invested in the lives of the characters I would have seen this on the shelf and just kept on walking.  This is a throwback romance novel cover.  I am all well and good for living your glory days but we all know there are some trends that should never come back, overly large shoulder pads, trucker hats, Uggs....and Fabio style romance covers.  The bigger issue is that this doesn't even suit the book, the main character does not look like this cover model, the main character is said to have kept his hair cut "too short, maybe...maybe if they had cropped this guys hair I could have gone with it but this cover makes me think I am going to be reading a historical romance (which I am all for) not a Lexi Blake Master's and Mercenaries tale.
Ayyyy, I unfortunately for you and me could go on and on about my loathing of this cover but I suppose that is not what we are here for and luckily for everyone involved the image created in between the front and back cover is so classically Masters and Mercenaries (M&M) that you will want to shout for joy when you are done.

We've had a rough go M&M and I.  The first few books I hated Ian Taggert enough that I almost walked away a number of times, but then some where along the way I saw his smile and his humor and I fell in deep.  I began to get to know all of these characters more intimately, I wanted them to find the happiness they deserved after the horrors they had seen, I wanted to be a part of their inner circle and Lexi gave me all of that, then things started to slide again.  I don't know how authors do it honestly, these long series, how they keep them fresh and relatable.  How they hook us and have us coming back for more and then even more.  Sadly there was a lull for me with this series recently, story lines started to run together, there began to be so many characters it was getting hard to keep up with the who is who, the main corps seemed to take a back seat and I missed them terribly, it just started to feel bogged down in it's own history.  So you might be asking well why continue, well, because 1. I can't quit these books, lol, I have invested too much of my heart into them and they call to me.  2. Even a not so great Lexi Blake book is still a pretty great book.  3. Because I had faith that Lexi knew what she was doing, that maybe for a little bit she just got bogged down in it all too but would come back to the roots if I just hung on a bit longer and I can tell you I am not disappointed I did.

Love Another Day has the feel of the original books, the books before Tex's, (who I loved but where it all seemed to go wrong) Liam has a strong presence in the book as well as Charlotte and Ian.  The simple feel of a straight forward romance with BDSM themes and a side of action were all there.  We weren't transported into a confusing world of who, what, why, when.  We know if all, (with a bit of suspense added in) we know Brody was an ass, we know Stephanie is an amazing woman with a little bit of an over the top martyr complex (but we know why), we know their history, it is simple, clear, and relatable.  Not only do we get a lovely romance story about two characters we have been watching over the last several books we also get more of the 'Lost Boys', a group I am particularly interested in, we get a whole lot of Tucker who's story is going to be brutal both in reading it and in waiting for it.

I loved the chemistry between the two main characters, I loved that both stayed celibate for the year that they were apart, that though they may have thought about being with someone else, about trying to move on, that they simply couldn't.  It was clear that there could be no one else and I really appreciated the fact that they didn't even try to fill that void.  I loved that we got back into The Garden, I seriously want to see this place in real life.  I want to live there just because it sounds so gorgeous and peaceful, also I think I would never be able to get enough people watching, hahaha. I loved that Brody, once he got his head out of his backside never faltered, never gave up, even when Stephanie couldn't seem to get her head out of her backside.  He was contrite, as he should be, he was loving, he was devoted, he was patient.  I loved that the witty banter was back, Tucker's guileless-ness gave for some wonderfully light moments but also some rather heartbreaking touches.  I know that this was Brody and Stephanie story, but Tucker was the star in this one.  Sadly we have a few books to come before we get to his and like I mentioned earlier it's I think going to be quite the doozy!

If you have been on the fence with the series, if like me you started to feel a little bogged down and stagnant, don't stop. Love Another Day will bring you back into the fold and have you wanting more and more from the M&M series.  If you haven't read this series before, 1. don't let what I have said turn you away, this series is wonderful.  The stories are written well, the romances are steamy, the wit is perfection, the suspense and action engaging...it's all in there.  2. Don't start here.  This is a series, in my opinion, that you need to read from book one.  The main characters stick around through each book so you want to take the time to get to know them all, to see how they influence the stories and to see where their lives have had them.  I am really excited about where M&M is headed and I will be sticking around for a good long while, I just hope the books keep coming because I am not sure I will ever be ready to say goodbye to this crew.

~ HAPPY READING ~

Excerpt:

The door slammed and she suddenly found herself with her back against it. Brody crowded in, taking up all the space and staring down at her. His body brushed hers and she found both her wrists captured in one of his. He dragged them over her head, forcing her chest to come out, breasts skimming along his body. “I shouldn’t do this.” Tough chick was winning. Steph let her take over. It was surely better than the desperate girl who lived inside her. She kept asking for love and affection and getting swatted away. This was the next best thing, possibly the only thing she would ever get. “Then don’t. Let me go and I won’t bother you again.” “No, you’ll go find Ezra Fain and bother him,” Brody said on a growl. “Somehow, I don’t think he’ll find me a bother.” She’d barely spoken two words to the man, but she wasn’t going to admit it. It was better to let Brody think she wasn’t a love-starved girl. “He won’t fucking find you anything at all. If you’re determined to not sleep alone tonight, you can damn well do it with me.” His mouth came down on hers and every inch of her skin came alive. His kiss was overwhelming, hungry. There was no slow meshing of mouths. He took her, his tongue surging inside and dominating her own. He let go of her hands and started to explore her body. His hands were on her hips when he came up for air. “I’m leaving in the morning. I’m going back to London and I can’t come back.” She’d known that would probably be his answer. She’d known he wouldn’t want to stay and she couldn’t leave. “One night. That’s all I want.” It was all she could have. It had been foolish to think it could be any different. His mouth came down on hers again and she let herself get swept away. One night and her life would go back to normal. One night and then she would be alone again. His hands started to roam over her and she tried to forget all the reasons why this was a bad idea. He stepped back, his entire body set in hard lines. He strode over to the bed and sat down. “Take off the gown. It’s pretty, but I want to see you.” She hesitated, all her insecurities coming to the forefront. Somehow, she’d thought he would simply take her. “Let me get the lights.” He was back in her space again, his hand wrapping around her wrist. “I didn’t say turn off the lights. I said take off the gown. How am I going to see you if you turn off the lights?” “Brody,” she began. He was having none of it. “You got on your knees in front of me and you said you knew what you were offering me. The first thing you were offering me was obedience. The second was your body. You’re giving me neither right now.” His voice had gone midnight dark and something about the tone made her soften. He was right. She did know what she’d offered him and now she was trying to have it all her way. There was nothing wrong with her body. It was feminine and she was healthy. What was she afraid of? “All right.” He let go of her wrist and sat back down, looking like a damn king waiting on his concubine’s performance. For all his “I’m nothing but a grunt” talk, the man could be incredibly arrogant, and damn if she didn’t find it sexy as hell. Something about that voice let her know that everything was going to be fine. He was past the point of rejection. He was in and that meant he would play her Dom for the night. He would take care of her. She was as safe with him in the bedroom as she’d been in the field. At least she was safe for the night. In the morning she would be in a world of hurt, but she wasn’t thinking past tonight.

  Excerpt:

“You’re really going through with it? With a mortal?” Sebastian asked in dismay. Ulrik smiled and raised a mug of wine in salute. “Who am I to question love?” Sebastian looked out over the vast rugged glen and the loch below from their perch atop a mountain on Dreagan. “What of children? None of the other humans have carried a bairn to term? Your line could die out.” “Only the cosmos knows if I’ll be a father.” Ulrik shrugged and took a long drink. “I’m happy. That’s all I care about.” Sebastian didn’t have the heart to mention that years from now, his friend might feel differently. He didn’t understand why Ulrik wasn’t considering every possibility, because once he was mated, that was it. He would be bound for eternity. Though, to be fair, a King didn’t go through with a ceremony if there were doubts, and it was obvious Ulrik wanted the human for his mate. Ulrik released a sigh, his gold eyes bright. “One day you’ll find love, Bast. I hope I’m there to see it.” “Finding love is the least of my worries.” “Ah, that’s right.” Ulrik nodded, a frown forming. “So your brother is intent on marrying that young dragon?” Sebastian drained his wine. “Aye, and that’s a sore subject. Let us move to happier things. Like your mating ceremony. I hear the feast is going to be one spoken about for ages.” “It’ll be the first time so many mortals, Dragon Kings, and dragons will be in one place.” “Are you worried at all?” Ulrik laughed and placed his hand behind him, leaning back. “Why would I be? You sound like Con, always fretting about something or other. We’ve lived in peace for over two centuries now. My mating will be the first of many such alliances. Just wait and see.” Their peace wasn’t exactly stable, but with Ulrik’s euphoric state of mind he likely wouldn’t recall the growing unrest of the humans or the continued displeasure of the dragons. It was something the Kings spoke about often. Only a few hours earlier Con had met with some mortals to ensure the peace continued. As usual, Ulrik saw only the good in everything. No matter the trouble or difficulty, to Ulrik there was always a silver lining. It was one of the things Sebastian admired about his friend. And it was why Ulrik was so popular with dragons, Kings, and mortals alike.

Drunk Dial by Penelope Ward - Now Available

NOW AVAILABLE

Amazon ~ Audio ~ iBooks ~ Nook ~ Kobo ~ AmazonPB

Book Description:

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new, sexy standalone novel.

It seemed like a good idea at the time. Look up Landon Roderick, that boy from childhood whom I’d never been able to forget—even though he so easily forgot about me—and call him. Then again, anything sounds like a good idea when you’ve had a little too much wine before bed, right? It was supposed to be just a quick, meaningless, prank call. Instead, I went off on him—unloading thirteen years of pent-up emotions. I didn’t think he’d call me back. I certainly could never have anticipated the weeks of sexually tense phone conversations that followed as I got to know the man he’d become. Turned out, Landon had never really forgotten me, either. That special connection we had was still there. I opened up to him, but there were also things about me he didn’t know. And he had his own secrets. Over the countless hours we talked on the phone, I wondered what would happen if we actually saw each other. One night, I did something impulsive again. Only this time, I went to the airport and booked a ticket to California. We were about to find out if one phone call could bring two lost souls together or if my drunk dial really was all just a big mistake.

 A complete STANDALONE.

Penelope Ward is a New York Times, USA Today, and #1 Wall Street Journal Bestselling author of thirteen novels. With over a million books sold, her titles have placed on the New York Times Bestseller list sixteen times.

After that evening, I hadn’t heard back from him for a few days. Then, one night, a text came in from the same phone number I recognized as Landon’s. It was the first time he’d texted me. I looked down to find he’d sent a photo. I gasped. It was a heavily tatted man set against the backdrop of the ocean at sunset. Oh, my. It was him—a selfie. Fuck. Me. He was beautiful. I wouldn’t have even known it was Landon were it not for the blue eyes I recognized instantly. The shaggy, caramel hair I remembered from the past was now a darker shade of brown and shorter, cropped closer to his head. His arms and his chest were inked, his body so perfect that if I squinted, it almost resembled carved stone. I couldn’t stop looking at him. My eyes wanted nothing more than to explore the ridges and valleys of his stunning body. Was this a cruel joke? This was not Landon! But, it was. With my thumb and middle finger, I kept zooming in and out, examining the details of the ink across his chest and on his arms. There was really nothing sexier than a guy with perfect arms and a full sleeve tattoo. Even though his lips seemed fuller than I recalled, they still curved into a familiar grin that oozed confidence. The eyes and that smile were the only traces of the boy I remembered. I wished I could’ve leapt through the screen to smell him, touch him. “Hi, Landon,” I whispered, for a brief moment talking to the boy inside, not the man in front of me. This Landon was the polar opposite of the Ivy League yuppie image previously in my head. The only thing the man pictured might have majored in was badassery. He looked like a rockstar, a rule breaker, displaying a sense of arousing danger—someone who must have had women from all walks of life drooling over him for the sheer fact that either they couldn’t have him or shouldn’t have him. It suddenly became clear why, as he’d alluded to, a woman might have been begging him for sex. That made me wonder if he had any secret tattoos in spots I wasn’t allowed to see. God. A fire was burning inside of me, and I knew it was my crush exploding into a full-blown obsession. A self-conscious feeling came over me. If I was scared to show him a picture of myself before, now I was really hesitant. The message that went along with the photo simply read: Now show me you.

My Review:

Blade is one of my favorite Bayou Heat novellas in a while.  I feel like the authors gave us a fresh look into the world of Pantera while still staying true the current story. When you have had a story that has gone on for 23 books, even if they are novella's it is easy for that story to get bogged down in the muck and stuck in patterns that cause each book to sound exactly the same but Alexandra Ivy and Laura Wright always find a way to make each relationship feel fresh.  Each book has it's own twists and turns that carry us forward in the story without making it seem like the plot is dragging and stagnant.  I always know the when I enter the world of the Pantera I will find a relationship to love, characters that I have missed and new one that I want to know more about.  I will want to know the next part of the story to bringing the Pantera 'back to life'...which is a wonderful theme in this book.

Blade and Valli's story is one of courage, faith, love, and life.  It is the story of two people put in a horrific situation who not only over come their own personal battles but ultimately fight for each other and for their baby.  It's about taking a more than difficult situation and making just the best out of it but making it your future, about growing through it and breaking through any obstacle to protect the ones you love.

It is a theme that you will find in all the Pantera books but even more so in this one.  Valli and Blades passion and courage are beautifully written about and wonderful to read.  You will have all the feels with this one.  If you haven't read the Pantera series yet don't worry you 'll be okay to pick this one up and start here though I highly recommend going back to the beginning.  I know you're like but, but....it's 23 books.  Well, yeh, kinda.  Each of those is novella length so don't run scared, it won't take you any time to get caught up and trust me it will be so worth it.  If you are a fan of this series don't stop reading now, grab this one up and get sucked back into the bayou, you won't regret it!

~ HAPPY READING ~

Alexandra Ivy is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author. From Alexandra: “I’m not exactly sure when I fell in love with books. Probably on my mother’s knee listening to her read Dr. Seuss to me. I do remember that I was barely old enough to cross the street by myself when I discovered the delights of the local library. Could anything be more wonderful than spending summer days surrounded by stacks of Nancy Drew mysteries? Over the years I fell in love with Victoria Holt, Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, and J.R.R. Tolkien just to name a few. I read poetry, essays, biographies, and plays. In fact, I read anything I could get my hands on. Years later (no, I’m not admitting how many) I’m still an avid reader, and my tastes are still as varied as they were in my youth, which I suppose helps to explain why I enjoy writing regency historicals under the name of Deborah Raleigh, as well as my contemporary paranormals as Alexandra Ivy. For now that is enough to keep me busy, but who knows what the future might hold! I do have a few other loves in my life besides reading and writing, the most important being my unbelievably patient husband, David, and my two sons, Chance and Alexander. Without their constant support and belief in me, I never could have been able to follow my dreams. They are truly my heroes.

Laura Wright is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author. From Laura: “Unlike many of my peers in the writing world, I wasn’t a writer or a reader until I left high school. During my youth I was into theater, song and dance, commercials and boys. I loved romance surely, but I had never read a romance novel until my late teens. With that said, I remember the day I did like it was a moment ago – my aunt gave me the Jude Deveraux novel, Knight in Shining Armor and I couldn’t put it down until the very last word. Then I went straight to the library and got another – then another until I’d read everything she’d ever written. After that, it was McNaught, Howard, Schone, Kleypas, and the Silhouette line, Desire. I instantly loved those emotional, sexy reads, so much so that I began to carve out ideas for my own stories, themes that were unique to me and moved me. In 1997 I enrolled in UCLA extension writing classes, met my mentor and critique partners and since have never stopped writing. I was committed then and I still am now; the need to tell my own romantic stories a full on obsession. My first manuscript was rejected, and though the second one was as well the editor who’d rejected it wanted to see something else from me. I had something (note to authors; always keep working, even after you’ve sent in a proposal) and sent it right away. The day I got the call telling me Desire wanted to buy Cinderella and the Playboy was the best day of my life. That is until I married my husband, and had my two beautiful children. But I must say, writing is much like motherhood – tough, grueling, surprising, delicious and for me, a dream come true.”
