Book Description:

A yearning that won’t be denied

Rachel Marek is a journalist with a plan. She intends to expose the truth about dragons to the world – and her target is within sight. Nothing matters but getting the truth, especially not the ruggedly handsome, roguishly thrilling Highlander who oozes danger and charm. And when she finds the truth that shatters her faith, she’ll have to trust her heart to the very man who can crush it…

A legend in the flesh

Suave, dashing Asher is more than just a man. He’s a Dragon King – a being who has roamed this planet since the beginning of time. With everything on the line, Asher must choose to trust an enemy in the form of an all too alluring woman whose tenacity and passion captivate him. Together, Asher and Rachel must fight for their lives – and their love – before an old enemy destroys them both…

My Review:

I am a big fan of Donna Grant's Dragon Kings series so am always excited to get another glimpse into the series and I love these 1,001 Dark Nights novellas because they keep me in the Dragon King world in between full length novels.

Dragon Fever is the story of Dragon King Asher and intrepid reporter Rachel Marek.  The Dragon Kings are still in turmoil over the video fallout.  They are anxious in their inability to shift due to constant public scrutiny.  They are on the defensive, fighting the videos, the rumor, the conspiracies with very carefully told truths and public appearances.  Asher, has been tasked to step into Con's role at the WWC (World Whiskey Consortium) and he's dreading every minute of it.  Suave and handsome Asher is the perfect face and personality to stand in for Con but it is the last place he wants to be.  As if being sent to Paris to smile and charm business associates and the public wasn't bad enough he is also thrust into the hands of Con's longtime and dedicated....Task Master.  He is resigned to his 'place' over the next few days, until he comes across a beautiful woman who peaks his interest as no one has ever done before.

Rachel Marek has nothing left, nothing but her integrity, her desperate need for the truth and reputation for finding the deepest secrets within the lies and exposing them to the public.  The biggest stories call to her, people look to her to find the answers, to give them honesty and the story that has her attention now?  They story of dragon shifters in Scotland.  Rachel (Rae) is given a break in the story when an informant comes to her giving her the hope that she will be able to find the truth in the lies, his informations sends her to Paris, to the WWC, and into the arms of Asher.

This story felt a bit different to me than past novellas, while the relationship happens fast as is expected with a novella the feel I really got from Dragon Fever was more of a history lesson.  I enjoyed Asher's musings on being a Dragon King, all they have been through, all they have done, all they have given up, all the want.

“This was their planet. From the dawn of time dragons have roamed this world, ruling all. They could’ve easily killed the humans when they appeared, but they hadn’t. The Kings made room for them.”

Rae was a bit hard for me to like, but I think that was at first Donna's plan.  We aren't meant to trust her right away, but it made it a bit hard to trust in her and Asher's budding relationship up until the end.  I loved Asher and I can say that I really wish he had a full length novel.  I think that his musings would have made so much clear...but then again, maybe that's why his book is just a novella, I can't imagine Donna is ready to give everything away just yet.

I am totally head over heels for Con's assistant, Ms. Engel and quite hopeful that we will see her again in the future.  She's such mystery and I need to know more.  I am also still torn over Ulrik and Con.  I can honestly say that while Ulrik is peaking my interest more and more Con is sliding quickly in my esteem..  I don't know where the books are going with him, I don't know that I am much a fan of his anymore or that I have much faith in him.  Oddly enough that is exactly the plan that Ulrik has for the Dragon Kings to pull them apart and it's happening with the readers as well.

This is a nice addition to the series, another little look into their world in between books.  A link to keep us a part of the story and craving more.  It's a bit of a hard place to be, the place in-between wanting all the answers and not ever wanting the stories to end.  Luckily (or not depending on how you look at it, haha) I think we still have time to go before we have to say goodbye to our Dragon Kings and their mates.

You can read this as a standalone, especially since Asher talks so much about the history of the Kings, but at the same time you know me and you know I always suggest reading books in order.  There are small things that will make more sense if you have read them in order but nothing will be spoiled for you if you don't and if you have never read a Dragon King book before this could be a very good place to start!

~ HAPPY READING ~

Dragon Fever - Tour teaser 1

Excerpt:

It had been so easy to gain Asher’s attention. Then again, she had dressed the part. Though Rachel hadn’t expected such an immediate interaction with him, she was still pleased. She’d guessed right in what would draw his attention.

“Good evening,” he said in a smooth, deep brogue that she wanted to hate but couldn’t.

She nodded, smiling “Evening.”

“Ah. American.”

“Is that a problem?”

He was quick to shake his head. “No’ at all. I’ve several close friends who are married to Americans. I’m Asher, by the way.”

She took his hand. His long fingers tenderly wrapped around hers as his Scottish brogue fell from his lips. “Rae.”

“A curiously male name for a verra feminine woman.”

“It’s a nickname.” It was a trick of any good undercover journalist worth their salt to remain close to the truth in any scenario. Sharing an old nickname allowed her to use something other than her name, but still answer to it because she knew it.

“And your real name?”

She smiled flirtatiously. “That I save for those I deem worthy.”

One side of his lips lifted in a shockingly seductive grin. He leaned back in his chair casually, those bright green eyes of his studying her, as if by staring he might be able to see all the secrets she kept hidden away.

Rachel found herself gazing into his eyes. Never had she seen eyes such a dazzling green before. Even if she hadn’t known he was an immortal and a Dragon King, the truth of who he was blazed in those eyes of his.

“Your smile is fading. Why?” he asked, a small frown forming.

“Do you believe you can see a person’s soul in their eyes?”

“Aye,” he replied immediately.
