Book Description:

She’s in a white dress that dances around her ankles, and her hair tumbles in a long sheet of curls down her back. A veil covers her beautiful eyes, and she smiles directly at him. Janie is everything Rafe’s ever imagined she would be on her wedding day. Breathtaking. Gorgeous. Perfect. The moment he sees her walking down the aisle towards him, he knows that she’s the one. Then she passes him, making her way to the man she’s to marry. A man that wasn’t him. A man that he knows with one hundred percent certainty isn’t good enough for her. It seems that her father isn’t the only one who’s having a hard time giving her away. Rafe only wishes he knew why. Everything about Janie sparks protective instincts he doesn’t feel for anyone, not even his own fiancé. What he feels for the bride, however, isn’t merely a simple attraction. He knows that something is there just beneath the surface…if only he could reach it. It has to be something huge, too, otherwise he wouldn’t be drinking whiskey straight from the flask in a church pew and wondering how many years he would do in prison if he shot the groom in front of about a hundred witnesses—half of those being cops. He was good…but not that good. A near-death experience cost Rafe almost six months of his memory, but right now he can’t help but feel like a huge mistake is being made on both of their parts. One that’s going to cost him everything. Then she says I do.

My Review:

This is my first read from Lani Lynn Vale and I am really glad to now have her in my list of go to authors now.  I am a big fan of motorcycle club romances and while this one revolves around a club that we would have learned about from a previous series or two, the bulk of this book isn't your typical MC style read.  Life of the couple doesn't revolve around the life of the club, in fact our hero isn't even a club member, he's more like a sub contractor, lol.  Our heroine however is the daughter of I believe the club president, but honestly, and this comes because I haven't read the series (The Freebirds, at lest) that this book is a spin off from, I don't know how deep in the the MC world (or if the Freebirds are really considered a traditional MC) the other books get in to either.  While this can be read as a stand alone I will say, I really think it would have been better to have started at the beginning of this whole 'world' so that not only would I have seen the build up between the two main characters (Rafe and Janie) in Kinda Don't Care but I would also fully understand the mission and the workings of the Freebirds.  Are they an MC, are they a security firm, are they just a bunch of prior service alpha's doing good deeds for others in need....I know Janie's dad is a cop, how does that play in his role as a Freebird? Knowing all of those things would have made the book just that much better, of course that's on me, not the author but there you have it.

All that said don't not read this book, because I think it is a fabulous read.  I loved, LOVED Rafe even though he might have been a bit pervy when it comes to the age difference in the beginning.  Keep a bit of an open mind, he never does anything that makes him shudder worthy but he does take notice of a young Janie and it might make you cringe just a little, but she is well old enough to have a relationship with him when it finally occurs.  I loved his loyalty, his compassion, his alpha tendencies while still being completely respectful.  I loved his passion for what he does and for the people he loves.  He is simply just a fantastic hero, the kind you can't help but fall for straight from the first pages.

Janie is an amazing heroine, strong, patient, intelligent, as swoon worthy as Rafe.  She is a determined woman on a mission to be who she wants and love who she wants.  I completely appreciate that she has had no doubt for years that Rafe is the man for her.  I adored the there school girl crush matures and she does and is able to come to full fruition over time.  It makes her the perfect match for Rafe in all ways.  She is a young woman but one that knows exactly who and what she wants and she's nt only patient enough to wait for it but also determined enough to work for it.

Things get a little crazy when these two finally come together after Rafe is injured and their world starts to spiral out of their control.  It was sometimes hard to 'watch' because you know that this couple is simply meant to be.  I loved that the author reassures us over and over that things are not always what they seem and she would never 'hurt' her readers by 'hurting' her couple.

I really enjoyed the plot line and the suspense.  I will say I was totally shocked at the end, I never expected things to take the turn they did.  Honestly it threw me off a little but when all was said and done it felt perfectly right.  Definitely a Ah-Ha, now see I got ya moment, ha.

One thing I really didn't like was the treatment of Rafe.  Now because I hadn't read the other books that revolve around this world maybe I couldn't fully understand the reasoning behind it, but honestly it just plain seemed cruel and unnecessary to me.  I appreciated that it bothered Janie enough to have her constantly saying to herself that she needed to put an end to the behavior but I hated that she never fully went through with that.  Considering how long she has been in love with Rafe, one would have thought that she would have nipped that shite in the bud fast.  For a group of men and women who have a role in protecting others it really baffled me as to why they would in essence bully someone who is supportive and invested in their mission.  Again, maybe I just don't get it because I haven't seen the build up to that moment, but yeah...I wasn't to thrilled with aspect.

I am totally thrilled though to be going back and finding out what has gone on before now.  Learning all about this group of people and how they have become who they are to this point.  I am also excited about the books I have to look forward to in this new spin off series, Simple Man. Lastly let's just talk this cover for a minute....wait let's not, let's just all go and stare longingly at it.  If I had seen this book on the bookshelf it would have been a total cover love purchase even if I never read it I would have wanted it on my shelf, haha.  In fact, I think I am off to see if I can get the paperback right now.

~ HAPPY READING ~
