My Review:
* I am going to review the two book together, so this review is a general review not specific to one or the other, but specific to the entire The Southern Gentleman story.*
I am struggling to review this one and I am not entirely sure why. Maybe it is because it's full of action and suspense. Maybe it's because it is full of sexy and romantic moments. Maybe it's because there are so many things that are going on it's hard to give you much background with out giving away the story. Maybe it is because I can't decide if I loved the story or just liked it.
Let's talk about what I loved. I loved the concept of the story. I loved the idea of America's 'First Daughter' falling in love with a disgruntled disillusioned American Veteran. A man who has taken his disillusionment and turned it into a profitable business by taking on the ugly side of American politics and society and becoming their 'Fixer' I loved that not only is there the juxtaposition between the two main characters but also that the story revolves around their D/s relationship. I loved that the author clearly did her research and took the D/s relationship between the two seriously, that she treated it with honesty and care. I loved how well it was written, I loved that there is witty and intelligence to the story. I loved Nolan, I loved the mystery and suspense, the fact that there is a true story beneath the obvious story of the couples relationship.
After all that you must be wondering why I also just like the story. Well, I hate to say that I felt like I didn't get to connect with the characters as much as I would have liked. I think so much of the story revolved around the D/s and then the background story that we don't get all the time we need to get true development of both Nolan and Lola, for me mainly Lola. I wanted more of Nolan's story from his time in the Army, I wanted him to find closure. I wanted him to be a little more understanding of Lola's apprehension, he pushes her hard into the relationship because he's fallen fast and hard, because it's his nature, because there seems to be the idea that with his age his magically more mature and knowledgeable about life. On that same token Lola takes her youngness to a new level. I get she's in her early 20's but that doesn't automatically mean you are immature or incapable of making sound decisions which you wouldn't know from the story.
Overall though the fact is this is a good story. This is a well written story. It's a fast paced, action packed, sexy romance. I think anyone looking for a good BDSM based story will be really happy with The Southern Gentleman. I definitely suggest that you purchase both books at once sine they are both out. Book one ends on a cliffhanger and while it takes quite a while to get to how the cliffhanger plays out in book two you won't want to be waiting to see where things go. I am really looking forward to seeing where else Sweden Reese might go now that she's gotten her debut novel under her belt, if these first two books are any indication we have some amazing books coming in our future.
